Jerry's email update on the fight for Equal Rights (April 22, 2004)

GOOD NEWS &
BAD NEWS THIS WEEK....

FIRST THE GOOD NEWS:
Toolkit released: How to marry in Massachusetts
Getting a marriage license in Massachusetts is a relatively simple, multi-step process. You will have the best experience if you plan in advance. We particularly encourage you to carefully consider your plans if you are not from Massachusetts, you already have a civil union, you are already married elsewhere, or you or your spouse is not from the United States.
GLAD has released an informative online toolkit on how to get married in MA

Once-private gays step up to the plate:
In re-examining lives, couples find they can no longer stay silent

Jerry Ringuette, 37, of Quincy has become much more open about his sexuality since becoming involved in the fight for gay marriage rights.

By DAN DeLEO
The Patriot Ledger

QUINCY - Secrets and lies were once a way of life for Jerry Ringuette.

While working in the computer industry, the 37-year-old manager took pains to conceal his homosexuality. He'd fake a laugh when a co-worker made derogatory comments about gay people.

When his parents, devout Catholics, visited from out of town, they'd take Jerry and his ‘‘roommate'' out to dinner.

Even his closest friends were in the dark, though many had suspicions.

NOW THE BAD NEWS:

Our opposition is taking extremely aggressive steps this week.  I've included more details on these disturbing developments in the "Notable Items" area below:

Romney's fight for a stay on marriage licenses continues

Our opponents, including the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts are pressuring a single judge to delay marriage until 2006.

More opponents have called a State House rally for noon this Thursday (TODAY!).

Notable items this week:

Romney Takes Extreme Step to Try to Block Weddings on May 17...  Urge Your Legislators to Say No!

Please Read, Take Action, and Forward On!
Governor Romney has introduced legislation that, if passed, would give him the ability to argue, before the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts, that the May 17 date for the issuance of marriage licenses for same-sex couples be delayed for 2 1/2 years!

He can only do this if he gets the approval of the legislature.
Please click here to email your legislators urging them to reject this mean-spirited request.

FOES ASK SJC JUSTICE TO DELAY GAY WEDDINGS - GLAD IS REQUIRED TO RESPOND.

Predicting legal chaos in Massachusetts if gay and lesbian couples marry starting May 17, same-sex marriage opponents asked a single justice of the state Supreme Judicial Court yesterday to delay allowing such marriages for 2 1/2 years, until after voters consider a constitutional ban in late 2006.

OPPONENTS TRY LAST DESPERATE ATTEMPTS TO STAVE OFF FULL EQUALITY
Voters around the state have reported receiving a recorded telephone message over the past week announcing an attempt to remove from office the four Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court justices who ruled in favor of equality in the landmark Goodridge decision. The organizers of this appeal, which we believe to be well outside the mainstream of political discourse in Massachusetts, have called a State House rally for noon this Thursday. Neither the House nor the Senate will be in formal session at the time, and MassEquality is not encouraging any large-scale response
