This book by Shirley Slaughter gives us a bird’s eye view of the tension between the Church’s legal authorities and black Catholic communities.  Black Catholic parishes have faced considerable difficulties preserving their identities and traditions in a challenging environment.

There are no villains in this mix.  The Church in America has also been victimized as she struggled to work through the complexities of mixed races and cultures.  In the great migrations of the 20th Century came the Irish, the Italians, the Poles, the Germans, the Belgians, etc.  European priests who came to the United States to shepherd their own nationals were now suddenly confronted with a dysfunctional society reeling from the remnants of slavery and institutionalized racism.

Shirley’s book sheds considerable light on the life of one black Catholic community, Our Lady of Victory Mission and its effort to survive and grow amid great obstacles.
