Life Casts
I use plaster to
make life-casts of faces. From there I develop character, often slightly
surreal. For instance, the first piece, "Mermaid," I
transformed my daughter's face into a mermaid vase with a net of crackles over
the face, streaming hair, and shells for ears and eyelids. The totemic presentation, entitled "Growing Up," shows three faces
of my daughter at ages 6, 16, and a hypothetical 60.
The third piece, "Family Tree," uses a life-cast of my mother.
The frame of wood texture and natural trees with its roots/lines echoes her
facial wrinkles and alludes to her interest in gardening and genealogy. My whole family appears as
"Caryatids" holding up their fireplace mantel piece.
