After I got my BFA at Wayne State University (Detroit Michigan), I moved to New York City in the fall of 1977 to the third floor of 10 Bleeker St. (the old PS1 building). I made kite-like wall sculptures with wood and japanese paper, did some small oils and gouaches, and took a lot of photos of the NYC buildings.
I moved in the fall of 1979 to a loft in Williamsburg Brooklyn at 705 Driggs Ave. I began working with wood and encaustic paint until about 1987, when my interest in metalworking was rekindled. I had learned to weld while going to WSU in Detroit and I began to acquire more metalworking equipment. I experimented for many years with combinations of wood and steel, steel armatures and encaustic paint, and metal wall sculptures. As my metal fabricating skills expanded, I began making work that only used metal.
During this time, I became interested in intaglio printmaking as well, and worked on prints using various combinations of small plates. I took several courses at the Manhattan Graphic Center (http://www.manhattangraphicscenter.org) under the guidance of the estimable Vijay Kumar. I liked using photo plates with hand drawn plates, and then began using digital images that were printed on rice paper and glued onto the etching paper surface. I wasn’t interested in edition printing, preferring to create monoprints.
I moved to Portland, Oregon in March of 2003, and later that year, in July, I moved all my metal working equipment to a studio in Southeast Portland as well. I’m currently working on digital prints using scanned photos, drawings and cutouts from magazines, digital photographs, and combination monoprints using some of this imagery with etching plates.
I am continuing metal sculpture on the Notes Series and Head Series, and fabricating outdoor works in cor-ten steel since I now have a goodsized yard at my new home near Lewis & Clark College here in Oregon. In the summer of 2007 I began my affiliation with Springbox Gallery in Portland Oregon.
