Dear Mr Steel Beard.

Can you or anyone tell me how to unlock the 'safe travel switch' on a Philishave Coolskin HQ 7780.

I thought that one just had to hold the switch down for 3 secs, and it reverted to normal, but this does not work.

Regards Peter Mortimer

Thanks for your note, Peter.  There is a yellow key light indicated in the shaver's manual of which is PDF link is at http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/h/hq7780_16/hq7780_16_dfu_eng.pdf and it mentions that the yellow key symbol should light up when you press the on/off button for at least 3 seconds.  That light should then blink then the motor starts running.  Did you see the key light?  A simple way the manual mentions to unlock the shaver is to place it on the charging stand while the stand is plugged in.  It's in the section of the manual titled "Deactivating the travel lock."  I hope this helps.

Hi,

I never had bought or use and electric shaver, I bought about a month 1/2 ago a Norelco 8150 xl, at the beginning it was fabulous, it lifted all the hairs with no problem except my neck, but I worked my way around that. Know that it has been over 30 + days my skin is starting to look ruff and is not shaving as close as I want to. There are some hairs that it leaves across the beard and the shave is not as smooth as the beginning and it feels like it wants to peal off. In the Manual it says to clean under water, maybe it was getting dirty, but I rinse it every time I use it. I have several questions:

-Do you think I have to use anything else to clean it? In the manual it does not talk about alcohol or any other substance to clean it.

-Why is my skin looking ruff know?

-Should I stop using it or should I continue to see what happens?

-Do you think it could be the shaver it self that is losing quality?

Thank's much !

Marcos Pena

Thanks for your question, Marcos.  The manual, of which a PDF is at http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/8/8150xl_43/8150xl_43_dfu_eng.pdf, says to clean the heads once a month.  Your message indicated that you rinsed the shaver assembly but did not disassemble it for a more through cleaning.  Philips mentioned in the manual the Norelco RC1776 shaver cleaner which can do the job and is available wherever Philips Norelco shavers and replacement heads are sold.  I think the heads after a month would need serious cleaning and this may be the cause of the problem. So I suggest trying the RC1776 shaver cleaner and see if that improves shaver performance.  I hope this helps.

I have a Norelco HQ4 Plus with flip up. I think model # is 5625X.

1. I have lost the service manual and cannot find on Norelco site. Can you help?

2. Can the batteries be changed? It appears there are 2 screws with heads using 1/16 hex/allen and maybe small slot screw driver notch.

3. Can the Ni-Cd be changed on this unit? It appears to be soldered on to the Printed circuit tabs.

Sincerely,

Ken McComas

Thanks for your note, Ken.  I tried both model numbers in the search engines including the Philishave branded equivalent HQ5625 and couldn't come up with a web site, either pay or free, which had a service manual for either model.  With soldering skills and patience, you can replace the battery pack yourself.  I believe the right size Torx screwdriver would be required for disassembly.  The battery pack should be easy to find at places like Radio Shack and specialized battery stores.  Remember to match the specs which are on the original battery pack.  I hope this helps.

Hello,

I had emailed you earlier in the month regarding disassembly and replacement of batteries in a Panasonic Wet/Dry shaver. I went about it on my own and have made a small tutorial on the process with lots of photos to show the innards of the shaver: http://dougsblog.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!4B6D7A9716A8E96!228

Thanks for the link with the info, Doug.  I'm sure it will be useful for those with a Panasonic/National shaver similar to yours.

Hi,

I have acquired an excellent Philishave 985 razor. I've had to fit new NiCd batteries, but otherwise it works beautifully. A modern equivalent of this old razor would cost about A$390.00, so my A$5.00 purchase wasn't bad. It gives me such a good shave I've stopped using my 6000 series razor. I have two questions:

1. Is it possible to fit a contour head on this razor - in other words, is the head compatible with a later model?

2. Would there be an advantage to fit NiMH batteries?

Regards,

Alan

Thanks for your note, Alan.  The quick answers are no and no.  The shape of the head assemblies of these two Philips models are vastly different.  For example, the cams and mounts of the HQ4+ heads which your HS985 uses are vastly different compared to later models.  Note that the newer waterproof models are hinged whilst your shaver does not have a hinged head assembly.  The recharging electronics are designed to work with the type of rechargeable batteries which are installed in the shaver at the factory.  Using a different type of battery can damage the electronics.  I hope this helps.

Hi! Even though I am a woman, I just had to say how much I LOVE your site. You are so helpful and informative. I read through the various postings as I am intent on getting my boyfriend a shaver as one of his Christmas gifts (nothing like a clean shave!), but I had a specific question. I know you recommend the SmartTouch Norelco as one of your favorites, but I was hoping to stay under $100 for this item. I saw both the 7145XL and the 8151XL. Do you think either of these is better than the other? Any other Norelcos in this range you like? Or...is the SmartTouch so super fabulous that I should just go for it? In that case is there a difference between the 9160XL, the 9190 XL and the mac daddy 9170XLCC??? Thanks in advance for your help.

Happy Holidays!!!

Deb

You're welcome and Happy Holidays, Deb. Thanks for your note.  The "CC" models include a cleaning machine which I've received mixed comments about.  I think you don't need the cleaning machine.  Just clean the shaver (unplugged from the cord, of course) with hot water under the faucet.  The Philips Norelco 7145 is one of the new models which use the old Sensotec/Spectra heads which are highly recommended.  The 8151 is one of the Speed XL models.  The 9160, 9170 and 9190 models are all in the SmartTouch XL series which all use the Speed XL heads and add a closeness/comfort adjustment and adds additional flexiblility with its head assembly.  For budget reasons, I'd pick the 7145 XL.  If it's what I think it is, it comes with a bonus nose and ear hair trimmer.  I hope this helps.

DEAR SIRS -

I HAVE AN OLD LADY SCHICK CROWN JEWEL MODEL 110 ELECTRIC RAZOR. IT WAS MY MOTHERS AND SHE PASSED AWAY ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO. IT WORKS FINE - POWERS UP THE CORD IS GOOD WORKING CONDITION AND IT CUTS AND IS CLEAN JUST AGED LOOKING. IS THIS WORTH KEEPING OR SHOULD I DONATE IT TO GOOD WILL? I BELIEVE IT WAS MADE IN THE EARLY 1960'S...

REGARDS,

JOE

Thanks for your note, Joe.  I guess it's up to you.  Unfortunately, replacement parts are next to impossible to find for this model and I wonder if the person who buys the second hand shaver would hold onto it as a collectors item as opposed to using it due to the parts issue.  They certainly don't make women's shavers like yours anymore, so I would suggest holding onto it.  I hope this helps.

Dear M. S. B.

Here I am this morning with half a shave. The events leading up to this involve my former Wahl mod. 4000 Shaving System.

I thought: “Wahl, that’s what my barber uses, must be good quality, right?” WRONG! I purchased it at Sears for around $50.00. I had no problem with the price. I must add here that I would pay 4 times that cost for a shaver of really good quality, and not just additional gimmickry and unneeded stuff.

At any rate, the plug-in charger literally fell apart in my hand on removal from package, threw that away along with the chinzey plastic carry case. I really didn’t need the case anyway because the batteries refused to accept a charge after two weeks of operation. I decided: okay this is now a “plug-in” type shaverand used it as such for the last six months.

I will say that it did provide excellent shaves until this morning when it just inexplicably quit completely.

This piece of junk hit the trash can after half a shave, and I can only say that Wahl should have spent more on product quality and reliability. It seems like a good design and shaves well when it works, but should be marketed as a “disposable razor” and priced as such.

Next purchase is the Braun 1775, we’ll see how this one works.

Mark Hodgens

Thanks for your note critical of Wahl's quality control and I'll look forward to your comments on the Braun 1775, Mark.  Braun is famous for its German workmanship.

Hello Mr. Steel Beard!

What an informative site--Thanks!

I am researching electric shavers to give one to my boyfriend who is thinking about making the switch from regular razors so he'll be able to shave daily. After some research, I've decided to get a Braun Flex XP II, but I've come across a confusion that I'm hoping you'll be able to clear up.

Is the Braun Contour 5775 and the Braun Flex XP II 5775 essentially the exact same shaver? I've compared on the Braun website, but the wording is such that I'm led to believe they are the same thing but I can't be sure. On some websites, the names ("Flex" and "Contour") are used to describe the same item.

I would appreciate any help you can offer to clear this up for me! Thank you!!

You're welcome and thanks for your note.  The names are one and the same.  The Flex XP II is the older name and Contour is the newer name.  Both describe the same models in that line.  I hope this helps.

Hi,

I have a two part question. First I'm still using my first electric shaver a Norelco VIP that is about 35-37 years old. Other than a cracked plastic cover over the rotary blades it has never seen the shop. I must admit it does seem a bit loud these days. What shaver would you recommend I consider if i were to replace my VIP? Has shaver technology changed to the point where I would notice the difference with a new shaver? If so what should I look at. My second question what shaver would you recommend for my 21 yr old son. His current Norelco does not seem to cut too close. I do not remember the exact model but I'm sure we did not spend more than about 50 dollars on a refurbished model. What should he consider for a close shave.

Thanks for your assistance

Mike

Thanks for your note, Mike.  The Philips Norelco VIP line actually dates to the 1970s.  Shaver technology has advanced greatly since then.  My immediate recommendation for both of you is one of Philips' new 7100 or 7200 series of shavers which are newly introduced lines of Philips (Norelco) shavers which use the same heads as their highly recorded but now discontinued Sensotec/Spectra series of shavers and are moderately priced.  These models are so new that Philips USA has not yet listed these models on their Norelco web site, but they are listed in the Philips Canada web site.  I found several examples at http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=philips+%2B+%22precision+cutting+system%22&btnG=Search&lmode=online&price1=&price2=70.00&lnk=prsugg  I hope this helps.

Hello,

I am addicted to the wet shaving of the panasonic line. The ability to return to troubled spots without risk of irritation (thanks to shaving gel and water) is unbeatable. Wet shaving is vastly better than the latest dry shavers (I've tried them all to avoid the problem Im about to describe).

My problem is, Panasonic batteries only last a year and conveniently so do their warranties. I have tried to do open surgery to replace batteries in my main shaver with ones culled from a cheapie. While the form-factor of the batteries was similar enough to work, this solution only lasted a few weeks.

Now I have a nice ES8096 that has died and I see that I can purchase the actual Panasonic batteries (WES8093L2509) from a few online stores. My question is, does anyone have a FAQ or tutorial on opening and closing these panasonic shavers. I've done it in the past but its not a picnic. All of those levers and gizmos tend to fall out of position if you aren't careful.

In the interim, my backup shaver is the Panasonic wet/dry travel shaver which actually does a great job (still better than the latest dry shave experience I get from Braun and all the rest). It lasts about 3 months on user-replacable camera batteries. Its just not as good as the 8096.

-Doug

Thanks for your note, Doug.  I'm having a lot of trouble finding service manuals listed for Panasonic shavers.  If anyone reading this can help out, can you let us know?

Aloha~~

I have been using a Wahl E39561 that my hubby found super cheap off ebay a while back. Although I need to repeat over areas quite a few times, I do end up with a nice close shave in my bikini area with minimal irritation. Unfortunately after receiving many tiny nicks and cuts one day I realized there is a tiny hole where the foil has broke. Also, the blades do not seem to be too sharp anymore as when I'd first used it.......we've managed to find foils for it once but now I am unable to find anything with an internet search.

Can you fill me in on where I may find replacement parts or what new razor on the market is comparable or possibly better?!

And is there a foil razor with a more contoured or smaller head for the bikini areas.

Thanks~~Rita

Thanks for you note, Rita.  I can't find record of a Wahl E39561 model.  Can you check the unit again?  I found a web page which lists replacement Wahl  replacement foils and cutters at http://wahl.factoryoutletstore.com/browse/bd279486a785819f6c8ec00ff64654cb/Wahl_Shaver_Accessories.html which I hope lists a replacement which matches yours. In any case, there are women's shavers designed for bikini areas.  A search indicated several bikini area shavers available.  You can see them at http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=shaver+%2B+bikini&btnG=Search+Froogle   I hope this helps.

Hello,

I want to replace the battery on my brAun shaver 5563u. I found the info where and how to buy the replacement battery, but not how to do it.

I also found the service center - too far.

Perhaps there exists a service manual someplace showing how to open the cover of the shaver in order to replace a battery?

Thank you in advance,

Marat.

Thanks for your note, Marat.  Usually, the screws on Braun shavers are covered with caps.  Usually I would refer you to an archive URL at http://web.archive.org/web/20041025223715/63.230.9.155/braun/Srv_Man/SHAVER/ but as I type this, the http://www.archive.org server seems to be down.  I hope when it's back up that your model will be on there.

I have recently thought about getting an electric razor. I have a thick, coarse, curly beard and very sensitive skin. I tried an electric about 10 years ago when I was a teenager and it murdered skin, gave me a terrible shave and I wrote them off. As my beard has gotten thicker since I was 15, so has the irritation from shaving, so I'm looking at them again. Can you make a reccomendation as to which shaver might work well for me?

Currently I shave with a Gillette Mach 3 Turbo. I've tried about half a dozen other quality "normal" razors. It shaves pretty close for me, but my neck breaks out the next day EVERY time and I have to wait at least 2 more days to shave again. I can't shave against the grain because my skin goes absolutely nuts. I just want to give you some background, so that you understand my situation. Laying out $200 just to see if something will work makes me a little apprehensive, but, if it works, is well worth it.

If you could send me a personal reply as well as post on your board I would appreciate it.

Best,

-Clayton

Thanks for your note, Clayton.  I'll concentrate on moderately-priced shavers for your question as you seem to be hesitant on pricey shavers.  As you mentioned your beard is curly, I'll suggest shavers with more slots than holes which eliminate most except the high-end foil shavers.  The newly introduced Philips (Norelco) 7100 series Precision Cutting System models are what I suggest which use the same heads as the highly regarded, but now discontined Sensotec/Spectra models.  I hope this helps.

Hello,

Maybe you can help me.

I use an HP1601 since they first came out. A very fine shaver indeed. I saw on your nice site that you had an exploded view. I cleaned out my shaver but unfortenately the long hair part on top fell apart.

I now have 4 parts and I can not figure it out how that have been mounted.

There is nothing broken it's the knife part, the knob, a funny spring in z shape and a base.

Maybe you have also a exploded view on that one.

BTW extreme funny that I have to ask you overthere for help. I'm living in Eindhoven close to the Philips factories. But when you ask something to them about a product older than 5 years you get no for an answer.

regards and thanks in advance.

Ed Ploeg

You're welcome, Ed and thanks for your note.  For your information, the Philips factory which made the shaver is actually in Drachten.  The blow-up diagram I scanned is the only one on the service manual.  The parts you described I think are the components of the one-piece "trimmer assembly" which is part number 22.  I can't find the original document, but the printout of the scanned image seems to give the part number as 4822-690-30224. I hope I read that number correctly.  That part is very hard to find nowadays.  I wound up getting used parts when I fixed my HP1601 shaver over 10 years ago because they were the only parts obtainable.  I'll e-mail you the best scanned image I have of the parts diagram.  I hope this helps.

Hi

I am one of the pre-historic types who just started to use an Electric Razor for the first time yesterday - a Norelco 9160 XL. I always thought that when you switch it on - I will be able to see the 3 circular blades rotating. Well that did not happen - when I moved it around my face, it did seem to shave !! So here I am confused in my ignorance - how does it function? Am I supposed to see the rotation? Please advice !! I looked inside - there are 3 shafts which are rotating when I switch it on - so why does the blade not rotate !!

Regards

Ignorant Joe !!

(Joydip Mukherji)

Thanks for your question, Joe.  Did you look at the cutters through the holes and slots on your shaver?  Once you locate the cutters, turn the shaver on.  If you don't see the cutters anymore, you know the cutters are spinning.  Another way is to feel each head while the shaver is operating.  You should feel a minor vibration on each head.  I stress minor because the high end Philips shaves are designed to minimize vibration.  I hope this helps.

You're welcome, John and thanks for your question.  Philips has PDF files of several of their manuals for their products including yours.  The URL for the manual for the Philips Norelco 8140XL shaver is at http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/8/8140xl_43/8140xl_43_dfu_eng.pdf   Yes, you can charge the shaver with just the power cord without using the stand.  I hope this helps.

I also have a Norelco 5810XL.

My battery just died. I found what looks like a comparable replacement battery here

http://www.action-electronics.com/batrazor.htm

I am thinking of getting Battery 17. Which is same physical size, also NiMH, but 1300 mah vs the 1.1 (1100)mah the guy from Norelco listed. This should be fine, as the higher mah just means longer life on a charge.

Here is my question.

I have had this razor for many years. Do you think it is worth taking a chance on replacing the battery, (not the easiest thing, since it is soldered in - although I do know how to work with a soldering iron), or should I just get a new razor?

Thanks,

John Connaughton

You're welcome, John and thanks for your note.  It depends on your skill and your patience.  Be sure to study how to disassemble the shaver so that you don't make a mistake in reassembling the shaver.  With that said, go for it.  You may have read that I tried to replace a shaver battery myself, but goofed in the reassembly and forgot to completely discharge the battery before trying again and ruined the circuit board.  Just in case, I suggest getting a replacement shaver.  The suggested product line similar to yours is the 7100/7200 series Philips Norelco models which use the same heads as the highly regarded, but discontinued Spectra/Sensotec shavers.  I hope this helps.

I own a 8170XL razor. My dog, Socatese, opened it and removed one of the three grey assemblies that drive a cutter. Soc either swallowed or hid the assembly. I can't find any parts list on your site, but if I can obtain the assembly I think I could put it back together.

I can't see how to take the Assemblies off (Soc is somewhat brighter than I, he's a Doberman) but if I had the assembly and could see the inside I think I could assemble it on to the razor.

Can You help me obtain the assy?

I sent the above message to Norelco and got an answer that basically told me where I could buy cutter heads. I don't need them.

Dear Mr. Beard:

Until two weeks ago I had the best electric razor ever made (it died). It is an Abercrombie and Fitch 60 purchased from the store of the same name roughly 30 years ago. The amazing thing (in addition to its longevity) about this razor is the power of the motor.

It was advertised to shave you in 60 seconds, a claim it lived up to. It was made in Austria, but I don't know the manufacture. Do you know anything about this razor?

Thanks, Mike

Michael B. Sedgwick, CPA

Thanks for your note, Mike.  If the shaver was made in Austria, there is a good chance it was made by Payer which makes OEM shavers for various companies under their clients' names as well as their own shavers under the Payer brand.  Their official web site at http://www.payershaver.com mainly talks about the company.  The Payer of New Zealand site shows their offerings at http://www.payer.co.nz   I hope this helps.

Hello, I have a Philips Norelco HP1131 shaver that I have been using for about 30+ years. The on-off switch is sometimes having a problem making contact and I have to switch it on and off several times to make it come on. Can I get parts for this shaver or do you know of anyplace that services them. I once was given a new modern cordless Norelco 825RS for Christmas but the trimmer on it was so bad that it would not cut anything plus the batteries went bad after only about 6 months and would not hold a charge. So I would like to keep my 1131 going if possible.

Thanks,

Tom

Thanks for your note, Tom.  The first place I can think of is St. Louis Shaver at http://www.mrshaver.com which I've heard good things about.  You may want to contact them about parts availability to get yoru HP1131 shaver working again.  I hope this helps.

Hi, I enjoy your web site and hope you can help me. I recently bought and am currently using a Norelco Speed XL shaver. I have always been a Norelco user(30 years) but I really do not like this new Norelco. It takes a Long time to shave and the quality(closeness) of the shave is awful. I would like to buy a Norelco MICRO ACTION. Either mains only or a mid to upper grade rechargeable model. Any help in finding one would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave

Thanks for your note, Dave.  The Micro Action line (later Micro+) is the low end Philips Norelco product line and the Froogle search engine yielded a few models available on line.  The URL (which also lists replacement heads) is at http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=micro+action+shaver&btnG=Search+Froogle   I hope this helps.

Good Afternoon,

I have a older Braun Shaver Model 6520 that I really have grown attached to, but I think the batteries are no longer working. I tried using the electrical cord connected to the shaver but still not working. I did some research on the web and found a "Braun PC Board with Battery" replacement unit for about $25.

I tried to find the screws to open the razor but couldn't find them. How easy is it to replace the Braun PC Board with Battery?

Thanks in advance for your help!

george

Thanks for your note, George and you're welcome.  The screws on Braun shavers tend to be covered by caps.  This model is no exception.  There is a PDF of your shaver's service manual at http://web.archive.org/web/20041026154359/63.230.9.155/braun/Srv_Man/SHAVER/5705.pdf so you can see how to dismantle the shaver to install the PC board with battery.  I hope this helps.

I need to replace the batteries in my Norelco 6846XL razor. Is there a manual or instructions on how to disassemble to razor?

Thanks,

Charlie

Thanks for your question, Charlie.  The manual which comes with the shaver usually gives instructions on battery removal before discarding the shaver.  Basically there are hidden screws which appear when you slide up the trimmer.  While service manuals are published, they are becoming harder to find for end users.  I found some in the past from pay web sites but I couldn't find your model that way either.  Sorry.

Dear Gary -

Lately I have developed a hankering to purchase a Braun Sixtant from the 1960s as a collector's item.

A few questions:

1) Any ideas on where to purchase one of these older shavers? I couldn't find it on ebay when I looked.

2) Any idea at all of the fair market value for this item in good, working condition?

3) If I am able to locate one, do you know whether OEM replacement screens and cutters are still available?

4) Any opinions on how the shave quality would compare with a contemporary Braun?

Any information much appreciated. Thank you as always for this excellent web site.

Best regards, David

You're welcome, David and thanks for your note.  Here are my replies:

1) eBay is the easiest site to find older shavers. but it's hit or miss so I suggest making repeat visits.

2) Shaver collecting is still a cult hobby.  I have not spent more than $40 on a vintage shaver.

3) While I don't know the exact model number(s) of the Sixtant line, I found a European URL which lists a lot of Braun replacement parts.  I think it's in Czech, but you can see the pictures to figure out the right onw.  The URL is http://www.holici-strojky.cz/index.php?manufacturers_id=10 and that would be a good guide to use to ask Braun about parts availability.  I hope you don't need to send away for parts from Europe.

4)  Today's Braun models have improved foil designs to give you a faster shave compared to older foil designs.

I hope this helps.

I have a Norelco Speed XL shaver. One of the lights on the front of the shaver will not shut off. It stays on constantly which depletes the battery every 2 days. If it helps, it is the one to the left of the 'power meter' light bank that runs down the center.

It looks like a faulty power module which is a single unit which needs replacing. Have you talked to Philips at 1-800-243-3050 yet? Their customer service is usually excellent.

"

I called their excellent customer service.

They are pushing me to buy new blades, install them and wait a week.

If the light will continue to not shut off they will replace the shaver.

Any ideas how to push them to admit this is a defect without spending my money for new blades?

Sincerely,

Sam Mesh

Thanks for your note, Sam.  Unfortunately, customer service is only as good as the customer service rep you talk to.  Did you ask to talk to a supervisor?  You could call the number a second time and hope that another rep who is not clueless can help you out.  I had to deal with clueless customer service reps before at Philips, especially with technical issues and new product launches.  You could also ask for the location of the nearest Philips Norelco authorized repair shop, assuming that the shaver is still in warranty.  I hope this helps.

Dear Mr. Steel Beard,

I was hoping that you knew where I could get the schematics for my Panasonic razor Model # ES8152. My batteries died and when I opened the case to replace them a couple parts fell out and I do not know where they go. Panasonic will not provide them. I am very frustrated. Thank you.

Thanks for your note, Rick.  Checking the search engine, a service manual for a Panasonic ES8152 shaver does exist.  Unfortunately, I only found it through on line shops which sell service manuals.  You can see with your favorite search engine using the keywords Panasonic + "service manual + ES8152 to see what I mean.  I hope this helps.

Hi!

To Marianne from San Rafael:

The National/Panasonic "3-D" ES8003 has been out of production for quite a while, so finding a new one or factory refurb would be very difficult. But used models (and sometimes unused!) do turn up on eBay from time to time. (Used shavers don't scare me, so long as the cutters and foil are sanitized, and the unit functions as it should. Of course, the rechargeable battery will also be used, with a correspondingly shortened lifespan.) Replacement cutters are foils are available, as Gary has mentioned. I found some through parts.com.

I have no experience with Panasonic service centers, but they exist. Look them up here:

http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/vServiceLocator?storeId=15001

I doubt, however, if the cost would be justifiable.

The 8056 and 8080 are essentially the same - but later - versions of the "3-D" 8003 (though also out of production) and turn up a little more often on eBay. The 8080 adds a firmness control and was available through Sharper Image in the U.S. The 8056 was available through Brookstone. New National/Panasonic linear shavers are all "pro-curve" (not straight, like the 8003) and have different (and in my opinion, not as sharp) cutters inside. As such, I don't feel they're a good substitute (although I'm open to being convinced otherwise) for the 8003.

I just found a clean, used, fully functioning 8003 on eBay about a month ago, so don't give up. Patience and persistence are the keys.

Best,

Jim Roseland

Thanks for the info, Jim.

Hi there

I have a quick question I was hoping you could answer......

I need to replace the rechargeable battery soon for my Philishave HQ7830 shaver.

Getting the battery is easy enough and Im fine with using a soldering Iron but can you point me to any tutorials or give me a quick summary of how to do this? Surely touching the battery contacts in order to melt and remove the existing solder could result in damage to the shaver electronics?

Any help would be much appreciated ! Thanks; Phil

Thanks for your question, Phil.  There are special battery packs designed for use on electric shavers which have solder tabs already attached to the battery contacts.  So you apply the solder to the tabs to connect to the wiring.  The most important thing before you do this is to make sure the old battery is completely discharged before you work on the shaver.  Whatever damage which may be done to the shaver electronics occur when the battery pack you're working with contains a charge.  Also, carefully study the parts you need to dismantle and make note of how you disassemble the shaver to make sure that you reassemble the shaver in the opposite sequence in which you disassembled the shaver to make sure all the parts are reattached.  I know this from experience.  I hope this helps.

Hello,

I have a Philishave HP 1328 Rechargeable that worked nice. But now it´s something wrong with the charger. It´s impossible either to charge or use the shaver directly to the mains supply. I am using 220 volt but there are no/none blinking.

Any help?

Yours

Jan

Thanks for your note, Jan.  Did you replace the battery pack in that shaver?  If not, then you need a new battery pack.  A typical rechargeable battery lasts about five years in normal use before they need replacement.  Your Philishave HP1328 shaver is around 20 years old which means the battery pack had lasted four times its normal lifespan.  Replacing battery packs yourself requires patience and soldering skills to make sure to do it right.  Of course, you can check the nearest Philips authorised shaver repair shop about having them replace the battery pack.  Of course, check how much it would cost to replace the battery pack compared with the price of a new shaver to determine if the old shaver is worth repairing.  I hope this helps.

From: Marianne from San Rafael, CA (just north of the Golden Gate Bridge)

Hi,

I am lucky to have found your site. While trimming my husband's neck this Labor Day morning with his most favorite shaver, the National Model No ES8003 made by Matsushita in Japan, the shaver slipped out of my hand onto the floor (cringe :-( ). He used to work in Japan quite a lot and this was given to him there, although we live in Northern California. The foil was damaged, somewhat bent on one side, and the trimmer, even though he was able to reattach it, isn't working. He absolutely loves this shaver--he is dark Irish, has a relatively heavy beard--and this shaver just worked perfectly for him. This was such a shame and not a happy way to end the Labor Day weekend.

So, as you can see, I need your help. Here are my questions:

Re: National ES8003 - Made in Japan

1. Repairing it? Is this even possible?

2. Can you or KR, the poster from Seattle (formerly from LA), tell me where and what model foil would replace this damaged foil? (I attached KR's note below.)

3. From the looks of it, it seems we might be able to replace the foil, but I doubt the trimmer? Would do you think?

and

4. I was so happy to see KR's note (thank you, KR), I printed and gave it to my husband, who immediately wanted me to find the ES8080, but after searching the Internet is appears the ES8080 is no longer available. So, what model would be the closest replacement to the ES8003 and ES8080?

So, I'd like to repair what I can on the ES8003 and buy him a new shaver as much like it as possible.

Another Note: We are interested in a refurbished model to replace this ES8003, not a new one. Would you or KR know where to get a refurbished model?

Thanks for your website. What a great service to the gentlemen and, in this case, to the gentleman AND the lady!

Thank you for your help--I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Marianne Mabin

Thanks for your note, Marianne.  I should point out that National shavers and Panasonic shavers are one and the same and use the same model numbers and part numbers.  The replacement cutters for the Panasonic/National ES8003 shaver is part number WES9080P and the replacement foil is the WES9081P.  If you can't find this foil locally, I used Google's Froogle shopping search engine which yielded a few on line shops which offer this foil at http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=wes9081p&btnG=Search+Froogle  As for another ES8003,  I couldn't find even a refurb one out there for sale.  Does anyone know who offers one for sale?  As for repair, you can call Panasonic service at 800-833-9626.  I hope thiis helps.

I have, I think a pretty unique question:

Our family has recently become much more religious. We are Jewish, and as you've probably seen out there, many Jewish men have beards. I have always been clean-shaven, and I inquired as to why everyone has a beard. It seems that there is a passage in the Torah (old testament) that says we can't take a razor blade to our faces.

WELL, my Rabbi explained that I can use either a Braun or a Remington electric shaver. The way they cut hair is in the action of a scissor rather than the way a Norelco works or of course, the way a blade-razor works.

I have tried one electric razor - a Braun self-cleaning Wal-Mart one. It did not work so well on my extremely heavy beard. (I have to shave twice per day at times.)

I have two major questions:

1. What is the best-shaving electric razor out there - regardless of price? I need to get as close as I can to the shave I am getting now.

2. Do wet/dry razors shave as well as dry ones? I'd love to still be able to shave in the shower, but not at the expense of quality of shave.

I'd be very grateful for your opinions.

Thanks!

Bob

Thanks for your questions, Bob.  I'm very familiar with the issue you have.  For those who are not familiar, I should explain that the lifters on the Philips and Philips Norelco Lift & Cut shavers cause a nick on the whisker before the whisker is cut.  That's why traditional Jewish men have issues with Philips shavers.  Of course the solution is to cut the lifters and the http://www.koshershaver.org web site explains how.  Now for the questions:

Based on the ongoing Survey Page questions, the Braun Activator seems to be the best widely available shaver right now and it's a dry shaver.

About the wet/dry shavers, I've received mixed opinions on them, but the Panasonic models seem to be the favorite followed closely by the Philips Cool Skin (which has the Lift & Cut heads). With the wet/dry shavers, you can use you favorite shaving foam or gel.  The Cool Skin has a built-in lotion dispenser.

I hope this helps.

Dear Gary Flinn,

Thanks for all your good advice. I can't believe there is a site like yours where our mundane little perplexities about shavers can get a hearing.

I have one last (I hope) question for you. It regards how best to prolong the life of a shaver's rechargeable battery. I hear a lot of conflicting opinions and this may reflect the different kinds of rechargeables out there. Braun suggests that every six months or so, we should run the shaver out of charge by shaving without recharging. The computer guys are saying that you shouldn't run your laptop for long periods plugged in unless you remove the battery; having the battery fully charged for long periods shortens its life. Toyota, I hear, limits the rechargeable batteries of its Prius hybrid to run between 30% to 70% of their full charge, again to prolong battery life.

Normally I plug in my Braun to recharge after every shave. But pursuant to their instruction, I recently ran it down by shaving every day without recharging. It took two weeks before I noticed it noticeably slow down. Now I am wondering ...this is my question... would it be better for battery life if I recharged it only once a week instead of after every shave. Then I'd still get a fine shave but the battery would spend more time at less than full charge, and according to the implications above, might presumably last longer. What's your thought on this?

Walt McClure

Thanks for your new question, Walt.  It's a better idea to wait until the batteries are completely exhausted before recharging or if the shaver has a "battery low" indicator to recharge only when the shaver tells you too.  If you plan on not using a rechargeable shaver for an extended period of time, then run the shaver until the battery is exhausted before storing the shaver.  Of course, don't leave a rechargeable shaver plugged in unless you are recharging the shaver or using the shaver plugged in.  I hope this helps.

Hello. I have been a dry shaver for only 1 year and have a Remington Titanium MS3 2700. Should I have the cutters sharpened at all, or are they an item I should replace, and if so how often should I sharpen/replace them ? I shave approx x3 times per week.

Many thanks.From Martin. London England

Thanks for your note, Marvin.  According to the owner's manual.  The foil and cutters should be replaced every 12 months.  A PDF of the manual can be found at http://www.remington-products.com/manuals/ib_ms3titaniumu.pdf and it has more info on shaver maintenance.  I hope this helps.

Hi

I've had a problem for the last few years where if I shave properly the hairs don't seem to be able to get away from the skin on regrowth and cause nasty ingrowns and acne. I've tried salicylic acid, accutane and even had 13 laser hair reduction sessions with some success but I can't have one every month for life as it's just too much hassle.

The only way i've had good skin is to let the hair grow, unfortunately this means looking like a caveman. I'm now on the search for something that will leave the hair around 1mm from the surface so it can at least look tidy if i'm having to go for that designer stubble look.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Matt, UK

Thanks for your question, Matt.  I think the solution for you is a beard trimmer.  Because you asked for a stubble look of 1mm, I used the search engines which brought me to Andis trimmers.  Their web site is sketchy as to which models do the job you want so I suggest going to their web site at http://www.andis.com and ask them which models sold in the UK meet your needs.  If other people reading this know of other trimmers which offer what Matt needs, please let us know.  I hope this helps.

What are the ingredients in shaver cleaning agents? They must contain some non-corrosive solvents and some lubricants, most likely easily available generically at a tenth the price of the proprietary stuff. I have a Braun 7505, which works wonderfully. So far I just clean it with a brush weekly, and apply a drop of 3-in-1 oil once a month, and it works extremely well. I used a Remington foil shaver for years, but they do not seem to shave as well or as close as they once did (did they thicken their foils?), so switched to the Braun, which is excellent. One nit: I find the shape of the Braun a bit more clumsy and harder to grip than the shape of the Remington, but this a minor annoyance easy to ignore. Thanks for any help you can give.

Walt

Thanks for your note, Walt.  The main ingredient seems to be alcohol.  For example: I found one listing for the Braun cartidges to contain: ethanol, lubricants, aromas.  The Electric Razor Rap message board at http://jimelliott.suddenlaunch2.com has had discussions on how to make a substitute cleaning solution for the Braun Syncro/Activator/360.  So I suggest checking that web site.  If you can't find the discussion, then ask anew.  I hope this helps.

UPDATE:  Walt had an additional statement to make which he asked to add here:  One comment on gripping the Braun versus the Remington. The Braun, unlike the Remington, is so long you can't use your palm to keep it pressed to your face with mild pressure. So you have to squeeze it beween thumb and fingers to apply mild pressure to your face at right angles to your grip. Braun has tried to help by tacking little rubber nubs all up and down the front and back, so the shaver won't slip through your fingers so easily, but this is only partially successful. It's totally unneeded with the Remington's shorter more boxy shape. It would be nice if Braun would reconfigure the innards more like the Remington's shape, so it was short enough to use your palm for pressure and your thumb and fingers merely keep it steady on your palm. Nevertheless, the Braun gives me the better shave, so I put up with the shape.

Greetings,

I have a Norelco Speed XL shaver. One of the lights on the front of the shaver will not shut off. It stays on constantly which depletes the battery every 2 days. If it helps, it is the one to the left of the 'power meter' light bank that runs down the center. I have taken it apart and am tempted to 'disable' the offending light but am unsure what effect that will have on other functions. Any ideas you may have would be appreciated. I can't seem to find a schematic for this razor and the Noreclo site was a bust. Thanks in advance.

Brian Jacobs

Thanks for your question, Brian.  It looks like a faulty power module which is a single unit which needs replacing.  Have you talked to Philips at 1-800-243-3050 yet?  Their customer service is usually excellent.  I hope you didn't do any physical damage to the shaver as that may void the warranty.  Because you do have a Speed XL model which was introduced last year, it should still be in warranty as Philips offers a two-year warranty on Philips Norelco shavers in the USA.  I hope this helps.

UPDATE:  Mr. Jacobs sent the following update dated September 14:

Thanks for responding to my question. I must admit that I had already disabled the offending light by the time that I received your response. That is the reason that I have waited so long to write you again - I wanted to see if I had ruined the shaver or not. I am happy (lucky, I suppose) to say that it appears to be working normally again. It has been a couple of weeks and I still have not had to recharge. Dumb luck, I guess. Thanks again.

You're welcome, Brian and thanks for the update.

I recently dropped my Norelco 8140XL while out of town. The head came apart into all of it pieces. I gathered up everything and put it back together, snaped on the head and tested it. Everything appeared OK. When I got home the next day and was rinsing it after shaving I noticed one of the spring and piviots was missing. I've been looking online and can't find any where even the Norelco site that has these parts. Any suggestions?

Steve Haney

Thanks for your note, Steve.  From your description of your problem, you need a replacement head holder for your Philips Norelco 8140XL shaver.  The Philips part number is 4222-036-12150.  I Googled the part number and found a list of on line shops which offer it at http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=4222-036-12150&btnG=Google+Search  I noticed that you live in Texas. Using your phone number as a guide, I went to the Philips Norelco chatroom in their web site which yielded a list of service centers which may stock the part.  Unfortunately, the shops are in the Dallas/Fort Worth area which I think is about a 90 minute drive for you.  URLs the chatroom suggested where you can get the part by mail order were http://www.turnpikeappliance.com, http://www.authorizedappliance.com and http://www.marbeck.com  I hope this helps.

Hello Mr. Steel Beard,

First let me congratulate you on this wonderful site and excellent informative forum.

My question is:

Location: Mumbai, INDIA

I currently use a Panasonic ES4033s Electric Shaver (Dry & washable) for just about year. It is working very well and foils and blades are in excellent condition (due to a daily cleaning regime and general gremophobic nature!!).

Can I continue to use it although the manual says to replace the foil and blade every year? These parts are not available with the dealer, where can I get them?

If I should purchase a new model which one should I get?

Thank you.

Note: I am unable to find information about shavers available in India on websites & I would like to stick to foils

Thanks for your note and the kind words, Ramses.  Looking up the Panasonic model, I found that it uses the WES9837 replacement foil and the WES9850 replacement cutter.  With this information, you should be able to find an on line shop which offers these using your favourite search engines.  I hope this helps.

I have a question regarding my Norelco razor. The manual suggested one drop of mineral oil in the center of the heads as a lubricant if one doesn't want to use an aerosol spray. Yet when I tried this, I accidentally allowed much more than a drop to get on the heads. It ended up being more like a squirt pure head. My question is: could this much mineral oil cause my razor damage or effect the quality of the shave?

Many Thanks.

I have a Philishave 925 and would like to replace the battery. Could you please tell me how to order one or find a replacement for it? What are the battery specs?

Thank you,

BillP

Thanks for your question, Bill.  It would help if you mentioned which country you are in.  The first online shop I found which listed it is from Canada and the URL is http://www.abtecparts.com/commerce/search/products/?product_id=01XPHab1339&merchant_id=1933   The URL listed the price in U.S. dollars.  There should be an alternate page in Canadian dollars in the web site.  I hope this helps.

UPDATE:  Bill added that he lives in the USA and has a question about the screws on the shavers.  My new reply is:  You need a Torx screwdriver. There are different kinds of Torx screws so I suggest taking the shaver to the hardware store to find one that fits. There are sets available as well. Now that I know you're in the USA, Radio Shack offers the battery pack in question.

What would happen if you replaced the pair of 600 mah batteries (in a Norelco 955RX shaver) with a pair with higher mah's, like 1200 or 2200 mah? Could I just solder two single AA batteries together instead of buying a pre-soldered pair?

Thanks,

John Leith

Thanks for your question, John.  I believe using the wrong type of battery pack would damage the electronics module inside the shaver.  You should use a battery pack designed to replace the old one.  Because soldering needs to be done to replace the battery pack, the replacement should have solder lugs.  I believe Radio Shack offers a replacement battery pack for your Norelco shaver.  It's their #23-9036 which is 2.4 volts and 600mAh.  If those are the specs for your old battery pack then this is the replacement.  It's available at most Radio Shack stores.  I hope this helps.

Hi,

I am looking for a description of the best method for cleaning my Norelco Spectra shaver heads. I rinse the head in hot water every week or so and blow out loose whisker residue daily. I clean the individual blade assemblies every month (keeping the blades and screens matched). However I notice that I seem to have a buildup of residue between the cutting blade and the "lifting" blade. I can carefully brush out the leftover stuff but it's really time consuming, and I actually knocked one of the "lifter" blades out of whack once. I have been using Braun shaver cleaner since that's what I had. There must be a better way to do this. I corresponded with Norelco asking this same advise, but they weren't very helpful I'm afraid.

Thanks!

Lou

Thanks for your note, Lou.  It looks as if you're doing things right.  I hope you used the brush that comes with the shaver to clean the cutters.  I've been careful not damaging the cutters by brushing upwards only from bottom to cutting edge top. That could be why you bent the lifter accidently. Philips Norelco does offer their own cleaning solution which can help which is sold in the USA as type RC1776.  It's available both on line and at many stores which sell Philips Norelco shavers.  I hope this helps.

Thanks for your question, Marc.  I usually look up PDF files of owner's manuals from Philips at http://p4c.philips.com/files but even when going through the http://www.archive.org portal to look up the URL, I could not find the owner's manual for either the Philips HQ5885 or the Norelco 5885XL.  I did see a two page product brochure for the Philips HQ5890 which uses NiMH cells instead of NiCad cells.  Sorry I couldn't help this time.  If anyone has access to either of these manuals, please let us know.

I own a Norelco 6885XL and recently had battery replaced. It works just like new but I have a question.

The SHAVE COUNTER on the LCD is showing a flashing ICON to recharge, even though I can still shave.

Should I go ahead and recharge, or should I ignore the flashing icon and wait until the shaver can not power the heads any longer, regadless of the flashing ICON?

NOTE: This is partially a question regards the issue of "should I fully discharge my rechargeable battery" (aka. The memory effect of certain types of batteries.)

Thanks for your question.  I would still follow the "fully discharge my rechargeable battery" tip.  What I would do is to keep the shaver running until the battery dies down when the icon appears..  There is nothing worse in shaving than to lose the charge in mid-shave.  Then when the battery is recharged, see if the icon behaves properly.  I hope this helps.

Greetings,

I just read the website and found it quite useful. I have a Philishave Quadra Action (HQ 6425) with an adoptor, which I had bought from Europe. I've been using it for a long time and I just love it.

Unfortunately the adoptor is broken and I know this model is probably not sold here. I am looking for a place where I can buy the same adoptor or a Norelco/Philips adoptor that would work with my shaver.

Kind regards,

Serkan Sener

Chicago, IL

Thanks for your note, Serkan.  I have the exact model myself and, yes, it was not available in the USA, but it was available in Canada where I got mine.  The same cord is used on Norelco branded Quadra models and is easy to obtain.  Philps Norelco offers it in the USA as part numbers 4222-036-6810 or CC-02.  Using either part number in your favourite Internet search engine will yield several on line shops which sell this cord.  Philips Norelco also offers it directly through their web site or at Philips Norelco authorised repair shops.  I hope this helps.

I have found out how to get the best Norelco electric shaves in 50 years. First I wash my face with hot water and soap, and apply shave cream (or gel) as if I were going to shave with a blade. Then I shave as normal with my Norelco 8140 XL. The shave is incredibly smooth. The razor glides across the face very easily and you get a very close shave very quickly with no irritation at all. Clean-up is a simple mater of rinsing the razor under hot water -- the soap is already in the razor. Try it. It's far better than pre-shave lotion or talc.

Dear Mr. Steel Beard,

How often does a battery have to be changed on a Phillips shaver? Can I do it myself?

Jon

Thanks for your question, Jon.  The rechargeable battery pack inside your shaver usually lasts an average of five years before they need replacing.  You need soldering skills to replace the batteries as well as patience to make sure you don't make mistakes in dismantling and reassembling the shaver as I learned to hard way myself.  The most important thing is to make sure the battery pack is completely discharged before disassembling so you don't ruin the electronics module.  I hope this helps.

Monday I bought a Braun 4615 (4000 series) twin foil shaver. Charged it over night and used it this A.M.

But first I read up on technique, and foil vs rotary. I also read up on what to expect the first couple shaves, and the next 3 weeks.

I bought the Braun on a lark cause it was 50% off and I had a hankering to try an electric.

Today I went back and bought a Remington MS2-200 foil and Phillips/Norelco 6863 XL rotary, both at @ 70% off. They are still in the package, I didn't spend that much. I may or may not try them in the future.

My plan would be after three or four weeks of the Braun, to at least try the Norelco rotary for a month. Then maybe rhe Remington.

My question? After you get your face and razors broken in, can you switch back and forth from rotary to foil an back with no adverse effects? Do you think after this test I will have a definative feel for wich works best for me? Is it like night a day for most folk, rotary vs foil?

Thanks.

Thanks for your question.  I find myself mixing foil and rotary and as long as you use the foil and rotary shavers for different parts of your face, I see no problem.  I use a foil shaver to shape my beard and control my sideburns and use the rotary on the rest of my face.  You can also ask the same question to the shaver mavens at the Electric Razor Rap at http://jimelliott.suddenlaunch2.com for the advice of others.  The shaver manuals I read say to allow your face about a month to become fully accustomed to the new shaving method so I would suggest a longer period than you suggest to try out the different types of shavers.  I hope this helps.

Dear Mr. S.B.:

I've been very happy with the Remington ES-1000 as my skin has been bump-free since switching from a rotary (your recommendation of this model has been greatly appreciated!). Unfortunately, the batteries in the razor are on their last legs. I've been careful to take good care of the batteries (never ran the razor while plugged in, usually let the razor fully discharge before recharging, etc.) but after a couple of years, they won't hold a charge for more than a couple of days.

I've looked on the web to find replacement batteries but none seem to be specifically targeted for the ES-1000 or any Remington ES series. Any ideas for sources? And the case does not appear to be intended for end user servicing so I assume that my battery replacement won't be of the "pop-out and pop-in" variety. I would assume that all that's needed is to split the case, melt the solder on the old batteries, solder new connections on the new ones, and then glue the case back together. Is this about right?

Thanks for any suggestions....

Nick

Malibu, California

Thanks for your note, Nick.  I think you got it.  Because of the difficulty you mentioned for the end user to replace the shaver battery in which I'm concerned about inflicting too much damage to the shaver housing in trying to dismantle the shaver, I suggest contacting a Remington authorized shaver repair shop.  I don't know if the shaver uses hidden screws or locking tabs.  I believe the zip code where you are is 90265.  Using that zip code as a guide. I looked up Remington's web site and found two repair shops near you.  They are: Larrys Electric Shaver Shop, 815 Wilshire Boulevard, Santa Monica CA 90401. Phone (310) 393-3291; and Electric Shaver Shop, 15234 Victory Boulevard, Van Nuys CA 91411.  Phone (818) 786-2775.  I hope this helps.

Hello,

I was impressed reading some of the entries on your site. I have had for years a Norelco HP 1601 Rotatract razor. It still works great and want to keep using it as long as I can. The only problem is that it is starting to pull a bit and I expect the blades are getting dull. After almost 40 years, that isn't bad. I use it only once or twice a week.

I tried the new $40.00 razor and don't like it at all.

Can you tell me where to get new cutting blades?

Thanks

Bob

Thanks for your question, Bob.  You'll be glad to know that replacement heads for your HP1601 are very easy to find.  The current heads which fit it are the "MicroPlus 5" heads type HQ4+.  They are available whereever Philips Norelco shavers are sold.  I hope this helps.

Hi,

I was hoping you could tell me the difference between a Foil and a Rotary Shaver. I have to buy one as a gift in next day or so. Also can you tell me the best ones of each. My boyfriend is Italian, so he has dark thick hair, and no mater if he just shaved, in pictures it looks like he has a 5 o'clock shadow. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Tori

Thanks for your question, Tori.  The short answer is that foil shavers use an ultrathin screen over a set of reciprocating cutters.  Rotary shavers use round heads over sets of rotating cutters.  The best foil shaver available where you are is the Braun Activator.  The best rotary shaver is the Philips Norelco SmartTouch XL.  I hope this helps.

hello: i have been asked by an elderly gentleman to help him find a vintage electric mens shaver. the brand is remington XLR 700 or 800 series model 6MF1, dual microscreen. that is all the information i have, not counting the long conversation that ensued regarding the oustanding performance he used to receive from this product. he has tried several other manufactures and models without satisfaction...says they come with too many "bells and whistles" and don't do near as good of a job as the remington XLR series did. any advice on where i might locate a wonderful used machine to make this fine gentleman happy? thanks for your time. en

Thanks for your question, En.  You described the original Remington Microscreen shaver which convinced Victor Kiam to buy the company so this model is a classic.  Remington does not make it anymore, but used and rebuilt models are around.  I found an eBay shop offering a corded rebuilt Remington Microscreen on eBay at http://cgi.ebay.com/REMINGTON-XLR-CORD-RAZOR_W0QQitemZ220000452529QQihZ012QQcategoryZ31768QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem which looks like the one he's asking for.  I hope this helps.

Gary,

Great site,

Which I found through google although the link in some of the old reply pages directed me to a another site (comcast.net) but found the right one eventually.

My questions relates to a Philishave HQ5885 which has been serving me well since 1998, however a couple of weeks ago it died. I had noticed reduced charge and would revert to AC, however, even the AC will not work now.

Should the AC still work even with dead batteries?

Can you buy replacement batteries in Australia for this shaver?

I contacted the shaver shop in Sydney and was told that the cost of having the service (to replace the batteries) would be more than a new shaver. I expect a sale was in mind here, after which she guided me through the Philips smart touch range or the Braun 360 complete do you have a recommendation between these two.

Regards

Darren Young

Sydney Australia

P.S.:  Is this site still working as the home page link has directed me to comcast.net

Thanks for your note, Darren.  I should first mention that I use different ISPs for different parts of the web site.  My main Internet account is with Comcast High Speed Internet using a cable modem.  I still maintain my local ISP dialup account through InterActiVision as a backup and I started the Electric Shaver Page though InterActiVision's web space and the home page is still through InterActiVision.  Now about your dead battery pack, as long as the battery pack holds a minimum charge, the shaver will work with AC power plugged in.  When the battery pack is completely dead, the shaver will not work at all, even when plugged in.  As for where to obtain a replacement, I had trouble finding battery shops in Australia.  So I would suggest contacting a shaver repair shop where you are in Sydney.  Fortunately my list of shaver shops on line includes in in Sydney, Electric Razor Centre.  Their URL is http://sydney.citysearch.com.au/E/V/SYDNE/0031/57/05/ and I suggest asking if they have a replacement battery pack.  You need soldering skills to replace the battery pack and need to be patient and take great care in dismantling and reassembling.  Above all, wait until the shaver is reassembled before charging the replacement battery pack.  Of course, I'm sure Electric Razor Centre can do it for you if you don't have the skills to do the job yourself.  I hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply, Gary. :)

Nope, I didn't get the cleaning machine for the Syncro...I just clean it by hand. I use the brush, compressed air, then drop both the foil and cutting block in a shotglass of alcohol (separately, of course), shake it up with my hand over the top, then dump out the whole mess...wait to dry. Gonna be getting the Parks Shave Ease next for quick lubing.

Today, I only used the Lectric Shave and not the powder. Everything turned out fine. I'm still getting a little neck irritation, but not bad cosidering it's only been a week of shaving. My God...I've now shaved 7 days in a row for the first time in my 48 yrs. I can't believe what I've been missing. I think it was my Braun experience of 25 yrs ago that turned me off to electrics. My how times have changed.

I'm hearing lots of good stuff about the Remington MS2-390 lately. I might try it out some time in the future because I have a sneaking suspicion that the pivoting head of my Syncro may be keeping me from getting as close a shave as I'd like. Hey, it's only been 7 days, so I have to perfect my technique a bit.

Yup, just finished reading not only the pre-shave page, but the last 50! pages of the general discussion thread. I've gained a lot of knowledge in the last couple of days.

As for pre-shaves, the next things I'm gonna try are;

1) Total Shaving Solution Oil..samples on the way

2) Lectric Shave Ultra

3) Parks Prep...witch hazel/silicone instead of alcohol.

Regards,

Randy

Thanks for the update, Randy.  I'm glad we were able to help you out.

Mr. Steel Beard,

I'm new to the electric shaving scene (Braun 7526 refurb)...only prior experience has been use for finishing touches under nostrils and right below mouth..SenSITiVe!

My present routine is 1)Walgreen's knockoff of Mennin's pre-shave, 2) quick smeer of cornstarch baby powder, 3) shave, 4) rinse and cetaphyll moisturizer.

My buddy, who's an old hand at electric shaving (Braun 8595) says that he swears by Parks Pre/Aft combo to set up his beard. The Pre/Aft contains moisturizers to "swell the hairs" and set up the beard, and aloe to soothe. It can be used afterwards as well to soothe things down.

As it so happens, Parks also happens to sell another product called Parks Prep (pre-shave), whose purpose is ALSO to set up the beard, but isn't really meant as an aftershave as well. It contains mostly Witch Hazel, Silicone, and Aloe.

In your infinite wisdom, which do you think sounds like the better product to try out for use as a pre-shave, and have you ever tried cornstarch on your beard?

Many Thanks,

Randy

ps- It's my 5th day using the electric, and although not quite as close as a blade, I've been able to shave 5 days in a row for the first time in my life!!! If I get a slight bit of color on my pasty face, I might not even see the faint 5 o'clock shadow. :)

Thanks for your note, Randy.  Before I tell what I use for a pre-shave, I recommend reading the thread which talk about preshaves at the Electric Razor Rap message board at http://jimelliott.suddenlaunch2.com as they give different opinions.  As for what I use, I get my pre-shave preparations from the local stores and I like the Remington FaceSaver powder stick the beat.  The only down side is that the shaver requires more frequent cleaning, but because my shaver is washable under the faucet, that's not a problem for me.  Since the model you described is a Braun Syncro (I hope you have the cleaning machine) as that is also a washable shaver but only by using the cleaning machine.  I hope this helps.

Thanks for your question, Kirk.  I was originally thinking that a cleaning solution for electrosonic jewellry cleaners would work, but some makers of those are hesitant to recommend using it for shaver heads as they were not tested for use on shaver heads.  I did talk to Philips DAP of Canada customer service and they suggested using rubbing alcohol in the cleaner then using the Philips AL80C spray lubricant on the head assembly when you're finished.  I hope this helps.

Hi -

I shave my tough beard first with my trusty, bulletproof Norelco 710 RL, then with a blade. With offshore travel on the horizon, I need a light and compact travel electric to do the Norelco's job before using my blade. Best bets seem to be Remington's travel shaver and Braun's twist model, both battery powered. However, they're not highly rated on your survey page. Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

JD

Thanks for your question, Joe. My suggestion is to get a cheap battery operated shaver such as the Titanium Turbo which I found at Walgreens and Wal-Mart and is priced less than many blade razors. You can compare on line shops which offer it at http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=%22titanium+turbo%22&hl=en&btnG=Search  I was given one and I'm impressed with it. I use it mainly to shape my goatee and for the price, it does an excellent job. I hope this helps.

Hi,

I am trying to disassemble a Remington MS3 4000 shaver so I can try to solder in new batteries. I found a lot of little hidden screws inside and out, but I am stuck on the last few jigsaw pieces of the carcass. Is there a secret you can tell me to pop the case apart?

Thanks

Yours Fair and Square,

Randy Schulkers

Thanks for your question, Randy.  You'll be glad to know that I found a PDF of the manual in the Remington web site which shows how to disassemble the shaver for battery removal.  It's at http://www.remington-products.com/manuals/ib_ms3tct.pdf  I hope this helps

UPDATE DATED MAY 19:  Randy replied with new information which is as follows:

A little further info:

When I tried to just "pry" off the side pieces, I found they were glued pretty firmly. I don't think there is any way to remove these rubber side pieces and their plastic backing without destroying them. But in order to get the shaver apart, you have to remove the side panels. Beneath them are 4 square metal retainer clips placed over projections in the plastic housings that hold the assembly halves together. Once the clips are removed, it all comes apart. I don't think Remington expects anyone to replace these batteries. I will try to get this complex jigsaw puzzle all back together with fresh batteries and see if it works, but it won't be nearly as pretty. Thanks for your help though, because now I know how it must be done.

Thanks for your question, Dave.  The main difference between the Speed XL (8140) and the SmartTouch XL (9160) is the closeness/comfort adjustment on the 9160 and all other SmartTouch XL models and I believe it's worth the extra $30 bucks.  Are are some other differences which you can see in the Philips Norelco web site at http://www.philips.com/norelco  I hope this helps.

Hi

I am Julian Mancebo, from Argentina.

I have a Philishave 5865 reflex action shaver. I have been searching for a service manual on the internet, but I couldn't find any. I have a problem on my unit, one resistor on the board has blown, it is R1, and I cannot figure out the value in ohms of such resistor to buy a replacement as it has darkened enough to erase the color codes. If you have such data or can take a look on the insides of a simiar unit it will be great.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Best regards,

Julian

Thanks for your question, Julian.  All I can find is the replacement power module.  I do recall seeing a service manual for a similar shaver, but all it shows is the power module, not the components inside the power module.  So all you can do is replace the power module.  I hope this helps.

UPDATE DATED MAY 18:  Julian replied saying he did repair the power module himself so I'm posting the update to help others.

Thanks Gary for your reply.

I have tried with a 150 ohm resistor and it is working fine, at least it fully recharged batteries in one hour, is it supposed to be the recharging time, or was it too fast? since this razor is second hand with very little use, and was given to me by a friend whose intention was to trash it because of the malfunction. The spare resistor costed me 10 cents!! and a couple of minutes to solder it.

Now I have a full operating 5865 reflex action philishave at almost no cost.

Thanks,

Julian

Re the Philishave Speed XL, thanks for comments but the following day, with the light still on permanently, the shaver would not start at all, so I returned to shop, Argos, who kindly gave me a replacement option. I assume it meant electronic failure although this is not documented in the manual. Having had 3 faulty Philips in 3 years, and previously finding their CS very bad, I swopped for a Braun Contour 5785. Maybe not as nice as the Philips but im hoping reliability will be far better!

Hi, I have had a Philishave Speed-XL for 6 months and suddenly the 'heads' light is permanently on. The manual says a flashing light indicates replacement required but no mention of a permanent light. Cannot see any damage. Is the manual wrong and a fixed light the warning? Is this covered under warranty or is it wear and tear after 6 months?

Regards,

Andrew H

Thanks for your question, Andrew.  Because I have a Philishave Sensotec HQ8894 with a similar 'heads' light, I can answer from experience.  I must admit first that my shaver is a refurb so I don't know how long the shaver was used before I purchased it.  The date code indicated that it was made in August of 2003.  It's now May of 2006.  I bought the shaver in June of 2004.  So it looks like the indicator light is right on, even though I only use this model maybe two or three times a week.  I mainly use a corded-only shaver most of the time.  My manual says that the 'heads' symbol and  the word 'replace' will be visible for two weeks to remind me that it's time to replace the heads.  So the light is not permanent.  You just have to deal with it for two weeks, if your model acts like mine.  The Speed XL model I found with the indicator is the HQ8170, but it does not say how long the 'heads' light stays on.  I'm hoping it's for two weeks.  But why after six months?  If you do not follow a 'shave two or three times a day' regimen, something is wrong with the electronics and that is NOT considered wear and tear.  So I suggest contacting Philips customer support.  I believe you're in the United Kingdom so the support URL for Philips UK is at http://www.feedback.philips.com/GB_en/consumercare   I hope this helps.

Hello,

I am using the Braun Activator series shaver. I have been using Brauns for years now and I really love the shave I get from it. The only problem is I have a really thick beard. And even after I shave, I still see the small hairs still showing in my skin (black). To get rid of this, the ONLY thing I found was to gently press down harder in certain area's to get that smoothed "Shaved" look. Is there anything you can recommend to get me that close shave without seeing the black hair dots on my skin ?

P.S - I also use the shave sticks and tried shaving after shower to soften my beard.

Best Regards,

Thanks for your question, Frank.  The only thing I can add which you didn't mention was stretching your skin with your fingers while shaving to make the whiskers stand up more.  You can ask the shaver mavens at the Electric Razor Rap message board at http://jimelliott.suddenlaunch2.com to see if they have any other ideas.  I hope this helps.

Mr. Steelbeard,

I have a question on cleaning my Braun Syncro, which I just purchased. I'm trying to avoid the quite expensive Clean & Charge-unit, and thinking of finding a way of cleaning my new shaver in a proper, but less expensive way.

Could I buy e.g. the cheaper Norelco cleaning fluid instead of the more expensive Braun fluid(that saves about half the price), put some in an a cup, hold my shaver upside down for let's say a minute, then switch it on for about ten seconds so hairs and other debris are removed, and than let it dry in the open air? Is there any difference in the Braun ceaning fluid and the which Norelco uses?

If you'd have any advice, that would be much appreciated.

Lennyshaver

Thanks for your question, Lennyshaver.  I'm assuming you're asking about the Philips Norelco or Philishave Jet Clean cleaning solution for Philips' clean & charge unit and whether it's compatible with Braun's clean and charge unit.  I don't have a ready answer so I asked the same question to the Braun shaver mavens at the Electric Razor Rap message board at http://jimelliott.suddenlaunch2.com hoping we can get an answer there.  I hope this helps.

Boots are no longer supplying foils for their 2000 & 3000 shaver models, made from 1960's. From your site I discovered my Boots shaver was made by Payer in Austria. Payer have just supplied me with foils. Excellent service and low price, but a cheque in Euro is best option. Payer Email: office.austria@payergroup.com

Many thanks

Andrew

You're welcome, Andrew and thanks for the heads up.  I'm glad the material in the Electric Shaver Page helped you in getting new foils for your Boots shaver by Payer.

My housemate dropped my Braun 8585 and now there is a part rattling around inside. I can't find a way to disassemble it fix this and wondered if you had any insight.

Thanks,

Stephen

P.S. I am from Flint too :)

Thanks for your question, Stephen.  Braun has a habit of hiding screws under pry-off plugs.  There used to be a web site with PDFs of Braun service manuals, but it was shut down before the Activator models, including your 8585 were introduced.  The Internet Archive web site still has it at http://web.archive.org/web/20041025223715/63.230.9.155/braun/Srv_Man/SHAVER/  and you may find some hints in there.  I would suggest asking the same question to the Braun users as the Electric Razor Rap message board at http://jimelliott.suddenlaunch2.com and ask if anyone knows how to disassemble a Braun Activator model.  I hope this helps.

I have been using Philishave 5853 since years. Now one of the components(resistor) is burnt na di want to replace it. can you please tell me where can get the details of circuit diagram and components.

Thanks

Shashi

Thanks for your note, Shashi.  There are service manuals available on line, but all I found lately are from pay sites such as http://manuals-in-PDF.com or http://www.euras.com which both list your model.  The only part available is the entire module, not the individual components in the module.  The manuals-in-PDF site offers the service manual for US$14.95 or in euros 12.39.  I hope this helps.

Mr. Steel Beard,

Braun Model 5563U

Rechargeable battery

I was able to recently find the replacement battery pack for my Norelco. As for my Braun, since the batteries do not have any generic numbers, searching is not that easy. Would you know where to find those, or would the BT-2AA (if separated and installed in respect of the original polarity) would fit the bill? Any help would be appreciated. http://www.totalvac.com/parts/norelcobattery.html

Thank you.

Robert

Thanks for your note, Robert.  I Googled your model shaver and the first shop which mentioned offering replacement batteries for your Braun 5563U gave two different batteries.  You may want to contact the company which has a toll-free number to ask which battery is the right one for your model.  Go to http://www.batterybarn.com/braun.htm , scroll down to the models and click on the specs.  The phone number is on the bottom of each specs page.  I hope this helps.

Dear Mr. Steel Beard,

My father gave me a Brevete Monaco wind up shaver back in the 1970s. It is in excellent condition and works great.

The spring is nice & tight and winds up perfectly.

I am a woman and really don’t have much use for it, I was going to put it on E-Bay and try to sell it this weekend.

I have the original zip up case, although some seams have come apart and I have the original box and pamphlet that came with it.

The box has been taped back together in a few places.

Would you be able to tell price range I should sell this for?

Thanks,

Teri

Thanks for your question, Teri.  Shaver collecting is still a cult hobby so don't expect top dollar.  I would suggest monitoring eBay as this shaver does appear occasionally.  As I type this, another wind up shaver, the Thorens Riviera is on eBay.  You can go to the eBay web site to see how this shaver sells.  I hope this helps.

Mr. Steel Beard,

I have been shaving with a straight razor since I started shaving at the age of 14. As my beard thickened on my neck, it became increasingly irritating to shave it. Now, I am almost 21 and have no acne, but after each time I shave, I get massive patches of break-outs and irritation that stay extremely red for days all over my neck.

I am strongly considering switching to an electric shaver, or any other method that will not irritate my neck so badly. I have been experimenting with friend's razors, but, so far, nothing has been satisfactory. Bearing in mind that I am willing to forego some closeness in a shave to reduce irritation, which electric shaver, and/or any other shaving product or method would be best?

My regards,

Taylor

Thanks for your question, Taylor.  As a beginner's electric shaver, I would pick a Philishave Super Reflex which is called the Philips Norelco Reflex Plus in the USA.  It has slotted heads which are excellent for getting longer whiskers as on your neck.  It is also a reasonably priced shaver.  I would avoid most foil shavers as they have trouble with neck whiskers.  You can also get opinions from the shaver mavens at the Electric Razor Rap message board at http://jimelliott.suddenlaunch2.com   I hope this helps.

Hello Mr. Steel Beard,

Found you on this webpage: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/steelbeard1/tell05.htm

It is time to replace my husband's Model 5825-XL Norelco shaver that he has had for about seven years and is very pleased with. It appears to be obsolete now. Can you tell me which model would be the equivalent replacement and what price range I may expect to see?

Thanks in advance,

Kissable cheeks.

Thanks for your question, Kissable.  The top of the line back then, called the Reflex Action, is the near bottom of the line now, and an improved version at that, in the Philips Norelco portfolio of shavers.  The product line is called the Reflex Plus in the USA and the Super Reflex outside the USA.  Looking through an old catalogue and comparing it to what's offered currently, the 6853XL is the closest match to your old shaver.   This model is called the Philishave HQ6853 outside the USA. Unfortunately, they do not use the old Reflex Action heads (HQ5) in case you still have a set of spare heads.  The Reflex Plus and Super Reflex models use the HQ55 heads.  I found a wide price range for this shaver at http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=6853xl+%2B+shaver&btnG=Search   I hope this helps.

Thanks,

Al

Thanks for your question, Al.  While I couldn't find any specs on this model, you can find info in the whisker chamber underneath the heads.  Look for the description "100-240v~" which I found on a similar shaver.  If it does and look for the "~" to make sure, it does have automatic voltage adaptation.  I hope this helps.

Hello,

I have a general question. I have shaved most of my life with a blade but am considering the switch to an electric shaver. But there are so many out there! What one is best? I know this is subjective, but which one do you use? I am looking at the Braun 8595 or 8585. What are the benefits and drawbacks of these?

Thanks for your note, Peter.  Both are Braun Activator models which are considered to be among the best foil shavers on the market today.  They get more of the types of whiskers foil shaver are prone to miss.  The disadvantage I see is the delicate foil which requires care in maintenance.  The 8595 is the higher end model with a charge level meter which the 8585 does not have.  I hope this helps.

I have a North American Philips Corporation HP 1601 Rotatract Razor. It is the only electric razor I have ever had and up until this week it has always worked very, very well. A couple of days ago I opened the lid to the head area and it came off in the sink. The little silver connector between the razor and the lid had broken. Any idea where/how I could find one of those little connectors?

Thank You!

JDR

Thanks for your question, John.  I believe you're asking about the wire hinge on the HP1601's head holder.  You would need a new head holder which is a hard to find part nowadays.  You can E-mail suppliers of hard to find shaver parts such as St. Louis Shaver or Electric Shaver Service among other shops at http://mywebpages.comcast.net/steelbeard1/shops.htm to find out if they have any.  I hope this helps.

I hope you can help.

Is it possible to dismantle a Philishave 6000 series razor? I dropped it and the speed is now a little eratic. There appear to be two 'security' screws that must be removed. I would welcome any advice. (There's obviously a dry joint inside the razor.)

Thanks,

Alan Gent.

Thanks for your question, Alan.  Did you see the hidden screw(s) which appear when you slide up the sideburn trimmer?  Torx screwdrivers which you will need to open the shaver are available at hardware stores and home improvement centres, but there are different sizes of Torx screwdrivers so I suggest bringing the shaver with you to find the right screwdriver to loosen the screws.  I hope this helps.

Gary,

Maybe you can help me with a question about Norelco that has bothered me since trying the 8170XL. Why would Norelco put a battery in their new 8100 and 9100 series that only gives you close to half the charging time that they gave with the Spectra 8894XL? I tried the 8170XL from Costco, but took it back for that reason. I then purchased the Spectra 8894XL from Ebay and replaced the HQ8 heads with the modified HQ9 heads. It seems to me that they took two steps forward and one step backward with their batteries. I hope that you can shed some light on this question for me! This is the first time that I have every went to an older model of Norelco, which is all that I have ever used, except a one time trial of the Activator, which I really didn't care for.

Great forum that you have here! Keep up the good work!

Richard

I'll try, Richard and thanks for your note.  The 8170XL is actually a middle of the line model which uses NiCad cells.  The Spectra 8894XL was the top of the line and is still a great shaver.  It's still being made as the Sensotec HQ8894 which is sold outside the USA.  The new high end line is the SmartTouch XL 9100 series and all rechargeable models in this line use the Lithium Ion sells which the 8894XL you have also has.  The Speed XL models I was erroneous told by Philips Norelco that they do not have the Li-Ion cells which explains why you're disappointed with the 8170XL.  But there are Li-Ion versions of the Speed XL available.  Look at the bottom of the box which indicates the type of batteries used.  I understand the 8140 and 8150 have Li-Ion cells.  I hope this helps.

Greetings,

I have a one year old Remington MS3-2700. I had to replace the foil so I got a rplacement foil & cutter package.

Unfortunately I suffered a brain lock moment and when I threw out the old cutters & foil, I lost or tossed teh plastic piece that the foils slot into.

I can't find a replacemnt part online (though maybe I could if I knew exactly what to call it). Are they available anywhere or am I out of luck and have to purchase a replacement.

If I do, what is the difference between the 2700 and 3700? All I can see is that one is "premimum" and one is "deluxe". Any recomendation?

I've been happy with the Remington after finding my old Panasonic wet/dry mediocore, but am tempted by the Braun activator series. I held off last time from teh self cleaning ones as it did not look like they had worked out the kinks and it seeemed more of an excuse to sell us a replacement part. Are they really that much better?

Eric on St John

Thanks for your question, Eric.  I believe the difference between the two models are the recharging bells and whistles.  They use the same foil and the same cutters.  They also share other parts.  I used Froogle to see what's available for both models and you can see what's available at http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=%22ms3-2700%22+%2B+%22ms3-3700%22&btnG=Search+Froogle    I hope this helps.

Hi. I have a lot of problems with my sensitive skin. No matter what I try, blade or electric, I end up with razor burn and what seems like ance breakouts. I am 20 years old. The last electric I used was a Norelco 7735x Cool Skin. It worked great at first, but seemed dull after the first month. What is the best electric for people with sensitive skin and thick hair?

Thank You,

Thanks for your question, Chris.  Have you tried a Norelco Spectra (aka Philishave Sensotec) which is discontinued in the USA, but may still be found at a good price or the new Philips Norelco SmartTouch XL?  All these models have an adjustment for sensitive skin.  You can also ask the shaver mavens at the Electric Razor Rap message board at http://jimelliott.suddenlaunch2.com for their opinions.  I hope this helps.

Hello:

I recently switched from the Norelco Quadra-Action 6886XL to the Norelco Speed-XL 8170XL. The 6886 was a couple years old, and in need of new blades, so I decided to just buy the 8170 instead, since the replacement blades are so expensive. Yes!! I gave in to the Costco shaver like many others!!

However, in opening my new shaver, I neglected to keep the instructions thinking, "How much can one really learn from a shaver's user's guide??" Well, in using my new 8170, I have run into something I can't explain or figure out. The amber "wash" light on the right side of the display blinks for several seconds after shaving and turning the unit off. This happens every time I turn the shaver on and then back off. I have tried cleaning the shaver several times, but the shaver continues to blink the amber "wash" light anyway. I looked online for an 8170 user's guide, but cannot find one.

Is there a "reset" for this light that I am unaware of?? Did I buy a defective 8170?? Any help or guidance on how to solve the mystery of the amber "wash" light would be appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks for your question Steve.  I'm sorry about the problem you're having with the Philips Norelco 8170XL.  Did it come with a clean & charge unit?  Since you mentioned it's an 8170XL and not an 8170XLCC, I'm assuming no.  The Philishave counterpart is the HQ8170CC which includes the cleaning machine.  There is a PDF of that model at http://www2.p4c.philips.com/files/h/hq8170_16/hq8170_16_dfu_eng.pdf which I hope answers your question.  Reading it myself, I think the display has a problem.  Have you contacted Philips DAP directly?  Their phone number for shavers is 1-800-243-3050 and there is a live help section which may or may not help you as I had mixed experience with it at http://www.brigade.com/Norelco/Norelco_Chat.htm?language=en&country=US&catalogType=NORELCO   As I believe this is an exclusive model to Costco as it's not listed in the Philips Norelco web site, the last resort is, of course, to try and return the shaver to Costco with your receipt.  I hope this helps.

Thanks, Jeff

You're welcome, Jeff and thanks for your question.  Hot running water is fine to clean your shaver.  The RC1776 cleaner is intended for use on Philips Philishave/Norelco shavers which are NOT waterproof such as the Reflex Plus, Super Reflex and Micro+ lines.

Hello,

During the replacement of the accumulator of my Philips Definition 90 beard trimmer, a drop of welding made short-circuit.

The resistance and the transistor surrounded by a round were destroyed during the handing-over under tension.

It would be possible to transmit this photograph to Mr. D T Gorman, this one having asked you a question about the disassembling of the Philips Definition 90 on 15/6/2005.

The marking (disappeared) of these two components would be very useful for me in order to be able to replace them.

Thank you in advance.

Cordially.

Thanks for your inquiry, Andre.  I tried to forward your message to Mr. Gorman, but the message came back undelivered.  Fortunately, another person I know who was kind to provide a service manual (which unfortunately) does not have a schematic, just a replacement part number for a replacement circuit board, 4822 214 70488.  So I forwarded your message and photo to him.  I hope he can be of assistance.

Dear Mr.Steelbeard,

I have recently purchased a Philishave HQ6605 and I realised later on that I made a big mistake in purchasing it since it is only has a "rechargeable" operation and no "mains" operation.

I do not understand why Philips has not provided the mains operation feature as it would have not cost Philips a fortune to incorporate it in the shaver.

Is there any way to modify the circuit so that it can also operate on the mains.

Can you provide me with a service manual or tell me where it is available.

Yours sincerely,

Abhijeet Sawant

India.

Thanks for your question, Abhijeet.  Philips makes cord/cordless shavers, cordless only shavers and corded only shavers.  The electronics module or circuit board inside the shaver would need to be replaced with one designed for a cord/cordless model.  I believe its cheaper to get either a cord/cordless model or a cordless only model as a replacement module is an expensive service part and requires soldering for installation.  I'm sorry that the packaging did not make it clear enough that this is a corded only model.  The Philips shaver model number gives clues as to the type of shaver is it.  The second digit of the model numer is the one to follow.  Cord/cordess models have the second digit of 8 (x8xx).  Cordless only models have the second digit of 6 (x6xx).  Cord only models have the second digit of 4 (x4xx).  As for Internet access to service manuals as opposed to user manuals, It's very difficult.  I did find a German web site which offered service manuals for a fee.  I suggest continuing to try the search engines until a source for service manuals for Philips shavers can be found.  I hope this helps.

Hello,

I'm currently working on a college project where I am comparing wet shave razors to rechargeable electric shavers. One of the aspects I have to look at is what impacts rechargeable electric shavers have on the environment such as the manufacturing processes or the chargers.

If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Regards,

David Atkinson

Thanks for your question, David.  I believe the main environment impact electric shavers have is when rechargeable models which use nickel cadmium, NiCad for short, batteries lose their ability to hold a charge.  To some people, it costs more to replace the batteries compared to buying a new shaver.  NiCads are poisonous to the enviroment so they should be properly disposed of which means DO NOT dispose of NiCad batteries of appliances with NiCads in the regular garbage.  Many places which sell rechargeable appliances or rechargeable batteries do accept old batteries for proper disposal.  The main trade group I believe which covers electric shavers is the International Housewares Association.  Their URL is http://www.housewares.org    You may be able to ask the same questions to that organization.  I hope this helps.

You're welcome and thanks for your note, Jackie.  I'll try.  The HP1312 uses the HP1912 replacement heads which, unfortunately, Philips has discontinued.  You could ask the following Philips authorised repair shops to ask if they still have the HP1912 heads:

SASCO SMALL APPLIANCE SERVICE COMPANY LTD., 10546-115TH ST. EDMONTON, Alberta, T5H 3K6 phone 780-425-9550

There are sources for aftermarket heads which replace the HP1912 and the Froogle search engine found sources at http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=hp1912&btnG=Search+Froogle&lmode=unknown I hope this helps.

Here's a follow-up. I finally ordered the complete PC board w/batteries http://www.electricshaverstore.com/get_item_5505631_braun-pc-board-w-batteries.htm, cost about $25 plus shipping. My 925 has stopped charging - Can I fix?

Thanks for your question, Doug.  I'm assuming the shaver you're talking about is a Philishave HS925.  It can be fixed, but you will need to do some soldering to attach the battery pack.  The battery pack is basically two NiCad batteries attached together and has solder tabs.  You will need to be patient in disassembling the shaver to avoid mistakes in reassembling them.  One suggestion from experience is to make sure the battery pack, both old and new, is completely exhausted before reassembling.  I hope this helps.

Hi:

I wet-shave (with a razor and shaving cream) every other day. I'm thinking of buying an electric for those days when I don't wet-shave. Since I've read some of the material on your (quite excellent!) site, I'm thinking this won't work, at the very least because you state your face has to somehow become accustomed to the electric.

Is my plan workable despite this - or any other - factor??

If it is, I'm wondering if you can suggest a couple of inexpensive or mid-range shavers. I'm just looking for something that will be inexpensive to maintain. Closeness of shave isn't terribly critical, though comfort will be fairly important.

Best wishes,

Stephen

Thanks for your question, Stephen.  I think your plan is workable.  Foil shavers do shave very close, but the foil tends to be delicate and needs more frequent replacement.  My preference for a starter shaver would be one of the Philips shavers which is called the Super Reflex if it bears the Philishave name or the Reflex Plus if it bears the Norelco name.  Both are the same thing and are moderately priced shavers which do a good job.  The heads last longer than foil shavers, lasting a couple of years before shaving performance degrades enough to require replacement.  I recommend a 6800 series model if you want a rechargeable or a 6400 series model if you want a corded only model.  Don't get a 6600 series model because that is rechargeable only and can only be plugged in to charge it back up again--not to shave while plugged in.  Of course, I also suggest reading the postings in the Electric Razor Rap message board at http://jimelliott.suddenlaunch2.com and possibly posting your own question there.  I hope this helps.

Hi,

This weekend I saw a Braun Activator for sale at Sam's club. It was marked as model number 8781 or 8791. It looked like the 8585/8595 model, but didn't have any LED display on the front of it. Can you tell me anything about it? Is it an upgrade or "new and improved" version of the 8585/8595 Activator, or is it the same unit with a new number, etc? Sam's is asking $119 for it, with an extra cleaning cartridge included.

Thanks!!!

Your're welcome and thanks for your question, Skip.  It's a special package for warehouse clubs like Sam's.  It's also a "one time buy" so when they're gone, they're gone.  Yes, it looks exactly like the 8585 but with a bonus of an extra cleaning cartridge.
