Hello.
First of all, nice web site! Found it very interesting and found lots of useful information.
Im from Spain, and Im currently using a Braun Syncro 7505. Its a nice machine, but Im having problems with it because it has problems cutting hair under my face (lower part of the jaw) since it grows in different directions.
Because of this Ive been reading about rotary shavers, but the Syncro makes me have ingrown hair, and I read the rotary ones are really not recommended if you have this problem. (By the way, Ive seen the Syncro also has problems cutting hair that is very close to the skin, without being ingrown)
Is there any shaver you can recommend me that would help me solve these problems? I read in your site about the Remington ES-1000, but it seems it isnt supported anymore (Ive seen it in eBay, but buying it there might not be the best thing to do if Im going to have even more problems looking for replacement parts later).
Thanks,
Ronald
You're welcome, Ronald and thanks for your note. Looking at the Remington web site, even they don't offer replacement heads for the ES-1000 shaver so I understand your concern. Looking at the Remington Spain web site at http://www.es.remington-europe.com I noticed that Remington offers rotary shavers which, unlike the familiar Philips rotary shavers, do not have the Lift & Cut heads (which Philips holds the patents to) which can cause ingrown hairs. There is a web site for those with Philips shavers showing how to cut off the lifters at http://www.koshershaver.org intended for observant Jews who feel uneasy about the Lift & Cut heads and also applies to those prone to ingrown hairs as a result of the Lift & Cut heads. As for Braun, their newer shavers, the 360 Complete and the Pulsonic, both have redesigned foil patterns which are supposed to get more of the whiskers foil shavers usually miss. I hope this helps.

I have a Norelco Tripleheader with pop-up trimmer SC 8130 that still works. I am wondering if any of the heads blades currently made by Norelco would fit this old model. None of the replacement blades/heads that I have found list this model.
Thank you.
Thanks for your note, Patrick. Philips has discontinued the HP1912 heads your old Norelco SC8130 uses. There are aftermarket heads available for your shaver. The first place I saw which offers the heads you can find at http://www.electricshaverstore.com/get_item_1912_norelco-hp1912-rotary-shaver-head-blade.htm There are others if you do a Google search. I hope this helps.

Kudos on your site, Great Job...
Quick question or two...
Did Panasonic ever make a dry only shaver (not a portable battery powered one) or a shaver that did not use the induction method of charging, but rather an ordinary plug (like my old microscreen or even my Braun 7505)?
Did Braun ever make a shaver that had a head that approached the speed of the Panasonics?
Thanks
Derek
Thanks for your note and the kind words, Derek. Matsushita has been making Panasonic and National branded shavers for decades, mainly to Asian markets early on so I believe they did market dry shavers in the beginning. Their early shavers had one big round rotary head similar to the head of a clothes shaver used to shave off pills and fuzz from fabrics. Braun marketed a high speed shaver a decade ago called the Flex Integral Ultra Speed which could be what you're asking about. I hope this answers your questions.

Hi,
The top of my 6756x Norelco Advantage shaver no longer shuts properly on the base: The net result more often than not is that while the base rotates the heads properly (which I can see when the head is not in place), the blades do not rotate properly. On rare occasions, fiddling seems to get the blades to work, but mostly the loose connection means that the heads rotate wastefully. Is this fixable.
(Incidentally, my 7775x also developed the same symptom, but that is being replaced under warrantly.)
Thanks,
Anish
Thanks for your note, Anish. If you are referring to the head assembly not being secured to the body of the shaver, it seems that the lock is faulty. In shaver terminology, a "base" is the charging base used to recharge a shaver. I hope this answers your question.

I am looking to replace the heads on my Philips shaver (model #5885). I was wondering if the HQ5 heads designed specifically for the Norelco 5885XL are compatible with my Philips 5885 shaver?
Thanks
Jason
You're welcome, Jason and thanks for your question. Yes they are compatible. The HQ5 heads are one and the same whether the packaging says Norelco or Philips. Newer packages sold in the USA say Philips Norelco as Philips is eventually phasing out the Norelco name.

Hi,
I need some help with changing the heads on a Norelco 900RX. I do not have a manual and I cant figure out how to separate or remove the old heads from the pressure plate. Each of the heads are held in place by two very small metal prongs which seem to be part of some type of all metal assembly. It is attached to the black plastic housing or pressure plate somehow. If a manual is available that would be terrific or any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
David Solar
Thanks for your note, David. If I understand correctly, are the heads attached to the pressure plate? If that is the case, the heads slide outward for removal. There should be a diagram on the back of the package for the replacement HQ4+ Philips Norelco heads showing how the heads are removed from this bracket. Unfortunately, Philips does not have a PDF of the manual for either the Norelco 900RX or the identical Philishave HS900 in their web site. I hope this helps.

I decided to have new batteries and blades installed an old Norelco 975RX shaver that had been languishing in a desk drawer, with the thought of using it as a weekend backup. The rejuvented shaver arrived two weeks ago from its trip to Electric Shaver Service in Lincoln Nebraska, and its use has been a revelation. For whatever reason, the shaves from the 975RX are noticeably closer than my current Spectra/Sensotec shaver. The experience prompted me to replace the blades in the Spectra, but the resulting shaves still do not come close to the results acheived with the old 975RX. Do you have any idea why that might be the case. My best guess is the stability of the cast metal head in the old shaver, but perhaps the answer lies with superiority of the HQ4 blades.
Best - Tom
Thanks for your note, Tom. The Micro Action HQ4 heads have a microgroove machined into the surface of each head for a closer shave. If you look closely at the surface of the head, you can see the indentation where the cutters are underneath. Newer product lines either have a shallower microgroove or have a combination of holes and slots in which the surface with the holes is thinner than the surface with the slots. Philips decided to do away with the microgroove because some users complain of more irritation because the shave is so close that it shaves skin cells as well as whiskers. You obviously have no problem with irritation judging from your review of your old Norelco 975RX shaver. The shaver was also sold as the Philishave HS975. Thanks again.

I have a Norelco 6826xl that his given me good service for a couple of years now. Just this morning the on button under the rubber pad seemed to disappear and I couldn't press it to turn it on. Do you know if this is something that can be repaired for less than the cost of a new one, or should I just toss it and go for a new one?
thanks,
Marc Adams
Thanks for your question, Marc. It depends on if the switch or the control panel behind the switch has gone bad. If it's just the switch, there's a good chance it can be repaired. If it's the control panel, it's time for a new shaver such as one of the 7100/7200 series Philips Norelco models (7140XL, 7180XL or 7240XL) which look like a good replacement for your old Norelco Quadra 6826XL. If there is a Philips Norelco authorized repair shop near you, you could ask them what the problem could be and whether it can be fixed at a reasonable price or if it's better to get a new one. I received your update about the problem being in the switch itself and you were able to make your own replacement part so the shaver works fine again. Thanks for the update as well.

This might sound like beating a dead horse, as the subject has been broached before on your forum, although not from this perspective: I just bought an ARCITEC and I love it. The owner's manual is adamant about unplugging the razor when it's fully charged to preserve battery life. I have been using Norelco's since 1958. This is probably my 12th Norelco with a rechargeable battery. I have always left them in their charger all the time with no apparent adverse affects at all. Is this razor actually different? Unplugging the razor when it's charged (how would you know, if you're not standing over it all day?) is a pain. Why can't I just leave it plugged in, as I have always done? (I've never had a Norelco battery go bad or dead, ever.)
Thank you,
William J. Jacobson
You're welcome, William and thanks for your note. The Philips and Philips Norelco Arcitec shavers use lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries which require a different battery charging routine compared to NiCad and NiMH batteries. There are discussions about Li-ion batteries in the Electric Razor Rap message board such as at http://jimelliott.suddenlaunch2.com/index.cgi?board=talk&num=1185991526&action=display&start=0 where it's mentioned that you should never let the shaver completely discharge before recharging and not to leave the shaver plugged in for recharging for longer than 24 hours. I hope this answers your question.

I need a simple shaver that will shave cleanly around a beard and is reasonably priced. What do you recommend? Thanks.-B
Thanks for your note, Barbara. Of the reasonably priced, widely available shavers I've been looking at in the marketplace that meets your needs, I noticed the Remington Code. It's aimed at younger shavers and is reasonably priced. Remington has a special web site for this shaver which is http://www.getthecode.com if you want more info about this shaver. Of course, I also suggest asking a similar question to the Electric Razor Rap message board at http://www.shavermeister.com to get other opinions. I hope this helps.

Hi,
I've been trying to follow the conversations, and at this point I'm biting the bullet and emailing you.
I want to buy an electric shaver for my husband for Christmas. If money was not a subject, I think the arcitec philips/norelco is grand...But, money is an object, I'm looking for $50-$80 USD. He's always used blades, thing is, recently has been getting sores.. I want this for my Christmas wishlist:
a shaver that can handle thick, quick growth, but is sensitive enough that he's not going to get cut up, that's easy to clean (can't see him as high maintenance"), that doesn't have extra's I'll have to buy in 2 mths, and does it quickly, and is reasonably priced.
i thought i found one, but it was from info from 2000 and it's discontinued by norelco..
any point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks for your note, Karissa. I wonder what the Norelco model from 2000 was? Looking through the old Tell Mr. Steel Beard postings from 2000, Philips' top product line back then was the Quadra of which I still use a Quadra model. My reservation about that product line is that is has trouble getting longer whiskers due to its combination of holes and slots. The product line Philips introduced afterwards was sold as the Philishave Sensotec and the Norelco Spectra. I have a Sensotec shaver myself which has fewer holes and more slots so it gives me a more satisfactory shave. Two current models which Philips Norelco offer use the same heads as the old Sensotec/Spectra line and are the 7140XL and 7180XL and they fall within your price range. These shavers rinse clean under the faucet. I hope this helps.

Dear Mr Steel Beard
Help! I have been using a variety Panasonic Linear Foil razors for over 5 years now along with a dry powder stick. I currently use a Panasonic ES8163 Pro-Curve.
Unfortunately, I cannot get a clean shave on the lower half of my neck and have to resort to using a wet razor to smooth this section off.
I am therefore contemplating on purchasing a different type of electric razor. The choices to date leave me deciding between a Braun 9595 Pulsonic or a Philips Philishave RQ 1095 or 1085.
Please can you advise me of the razor that best provides a solution, in view of the problems I am encountering.
Kind regards
James Walthall,
Oxford, United Kingdom.
Thanks for your note, James. Your problem is a very common one. Foil shavers usually have trouble getting neck whiskers. The Braun Pulsonic 9595 is Braun's latest and greatest and their more recent generations of foil shavers have a foil pattern which is supposed to get more of the whiskers that foil shavers usually miss. Meanwhile, Philips, whose rotary shavers are great at getting longer whiskers, isn't lying down. Their new Arcitec line, of which the RQ1095 and 1085 are examples, have the most flexible rotary heads Philips ever made. I can't give you a single choice as either the Braun Pulsonic or Philips Arcitec are great choices. You can ask the shaver mavens at the Electric Razor Rap message board at http://www.shavermeister.com for their opinions. I hope this helps.

I have a Braun FlexXP 5612, which has worked fine for me for as long as I've had it. However, recently I tried to use it and it made this humming noise and wouldn't work on my face. I put in the charging stand, and when I came back at the end of the day the stand's green light was blinking. I looked in the user manual on the Braun sight but it provided no clue as to what exactly my problem is. What should I do? What exactly IS my problem?
Thanks,

I just purchased a Norelco Arcitec 1090 model and I also have purchased in the past Smart Touch XL and older models.
As you can see Im a lover of Norelco shavers and now for my question ( I also called tech support and chat support at Phillips or Norelco with no success )
They (Norelco) say you have to consumed the charge of the Lithium-Ion Batteries before you recharge them again and that is totally wrong.
I know for a fact that Lithium-Ion Batt (unlike M.H or the old Nic cads) do not! and will not! Produce quemical memory like it used to be on the older technologies.
I tried talking to tech supp. And chat support at Norelco HMMMMM!
The woman that answer the tech phone dont know shaving or Lithium-Ion Batt even if it hit her in the face and the guy that chat with me on the internet have not one single clue of what he was talking about.
Thank you

I have the Norelco 6613X. It's a cordless/rechargeable. If the battery is fully discharged, and I plug it into the wall, it still doesn't work, until the battery is charged some. If I'm in a hurry (which most of us always are), I don't have time to wait for it to charge before it's usable. I would think that it should work off AC power while plugged in. I can't afford to be stuck in a situation where I find my shaver is dead, and don't have enough time to wait for a recharge, and leave for work with a half-shaven face. Do you know of any models that work how I need?
Thanks.
Chris
Thanks for your question, Chris. Philips Norelco has a letter suffix in their model numbers which determine what type of shaver you have. The X suffix is for cordless only models. That's what you have and that's the reason why the shaver does not work plugged in. Norelco model numbers with an XL suffix operate either corded or cordless as long as the shaver holds a minimum charge. Corded only Norelco models have an LC suffix. On all Philips shavers of your vintage, the second digit of the four digit model number indicates what type of shaver you have. If the second digit is 8, it's a cord/cordless model. If it's a 6 such as yours, it's a cordless only model. If it's a 4, it's a cord only model. I hope this helps.

Hi,
I have a question about a braun activator 8585 I recently bought. Its a great razor, but in the last week it shuts off on me in the middle of shaving. Its not the battery, it has a full charge, and even when plugged in directly it will still power off. Thinking its something with the electronics in it. I clean it regularly but sometimes it wont recognize that the razor is in the base. Hoped to find a troubleshooting guide on the web but so far nothing.
Just wondering if you had heard of this (even in other models) and had any tips to try.
Thanks!
Dave
Oh, tried to exchange it at the store, but threw out the box and receipt a while ago, so I dont have any proof of purchase.
You're welcome, Dave and thanks for your note. Sometimes, I accidently slide the on/off switch while shaving. Does this shaver have a push button switch or a slide switch? If you didn't touch the switch at all and the shaver shuts itself off, it does sound like a problem with its electronics. Because you recently bought the shaver, it may still be under warranty with Braun. I suggest contacting Braun. Their global support web site is on line at http://www.braun.com/global/contact/servicepartners.html I hope this helps.

I just boaght a new Philips Norelco 7145XLB I was wondering how can I get a closer shave with less irritation ? Before I shave can I apply shaving cream to make it easier on my face ? Thanks
Thanks for your question, Nagib. This Philips shaver is one of the Precision Cutting System models which is a dry shaver that is washable for cleaning purposes only. So using shaving cream with this shaver is not recommended. For this shaver, start with a dry face and shave with a light touch, stretching your skin to lift flattened whiskers. If you need to use a preshave, I've had good luck using a dry powder stick. It requires more frequent shaver cleaning, but as this is a washable shaver, that shouldn't be a problem. I hope this helps.

Hi, my name is Andy from Grand Rapids, Michigan and I have a question for you. I have a Braun Smart Control 3 4700 Series(4775). This shaver uses twin foils. I have also used other twin foil shavers and the problem is they never caught my neck hairs. I have tried to go up my neck with the razor and I have tried going down my neck with the razor neither works. I can either direction stating at the bottom of my neck and going up or starting at the top of my neck and going down, neither cut the neck hairs very much. I also can go over ut twice, that still won't work. I know it's the razor either, because I have used other twin foil razors and they also won't cut my neck hairs either. The directions tell you to have the razor at a 90 degree angle while cutting, but I do that. My question is how come when I shave my neck with a twin foil electric razor it won't cut my neck hairs? What am I doing wrong? It does n't make any sense why the twin foil razors aren't cutting my neck hair unless i'm doing something wrong please help? I like to cut going from the bottom of my neck to the top and I keelp it at a 90 degree angle. I don't care if you post my comments or not but can you please email me back and help me out and answer my questions. Thanks alot Andy
Thanks for your note, Andy. Foil shavers are notorious for missing the longer whiskers in the neck area. The Smart Control 3 line, like most of the newer lines from Braun, have the "SmartFoil" which is supposed to get more of the types of whiskers foil shavers usually miss. The Braun Pulsonic is the latest line from Braun and that product line claims to get even more of the whiskers foil shavers usually miss with a "Power Comb" that raises flat whiskers before shaving. There are discussions going on about the Braun Pulsonic in the Electric Razor Rap message board so I suggest joining in. I hope this helps.

Sometime back you wrote that you would be trying the Shavetronics ST-50. What is your take on the shave and quality of the unit?
Thanks for your question. I like it. The shaver feels a little on the heavy side. The motor seems to be powerful and I liked the shave it gave me when I tried it. For those who miss the older style Braun shavers, rejoice! As this is a corded only shaver, it should last a good many years. It also works with older style Braun foils and cutter blocks so replacements should be easy to obtain. I hope this helps.

Hello Mr Beard,
I want to "pimp" my Hq8894. Do later series heads fit on early shavers? I'd love to fit hq9 heads if it's possible.

Thanks for your question, Adam. The answer to your question is a conditional yes. The HQ9 heads lack a notch so it's won't replace the HQ8 heads without making the notch for each head yourself. Thank you for answering people's questions.
I have a Norelco 9170XLCC which is only a couple of weeks old. I like the shaver, but I find two things annoying about the cleaning station.
1) When I use the cleaning station in the morning, the heads of the shaver are not dry by the next morning unless I remove the shaver from the station the previous night.
2) It seems I have to add more cleaning solution every couple of days.
Do you know of similar complaints by other people?
P.S. In regard to Jim Luikart's problem. I think I have an old 915RX at home and I'm a box saver. If I can find the instructions I'll send a copy to him.
Allen Russell
Thanks for your questions, Allen. I've read of similar complaints about the Philips (Norelco) clean and charge units. You can read them at the Electric Razor Rap message board at http://www.shavermeister.com in the older threads. As for myself, I prefer cleaning my washable Philips shaver by rinsing it under the faucet then letting it air dry before I spray the Philips spray lubricant on the heads.

I was pleased to find the Mr. Steel Beard Site.
I am trying to locate the specifications or data sheet for the Norelco 915RX please.
I am trying to identify the type of replacement battery specified and if a newer battery technology is available. Can a NiMH replace the original NiCd?
And can you direct me to where I can find or tell me the difference between the original Norelco Lift & Cut replacement combs/blades HQ4 to the HQ4-Plus to the newest model offered the HQ Micro Plus-5?
There is significant pricing difference and wish to understand the differences or improvements and the Phillips Norelco Support is weak and lacking as my searches has found nothing.
Thank you.
Jim
You're welcome, Jim and thanks for your questions. Because the Norelco 915RX (a.k.a. Philishave HS915) is well over ten years old, documentation is harder to find. While Philips does maintain PDFs of several owners' manuals, I couldn't fine one for either of the above models. They do have a PDF of the NiMH version, the HS920 at http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/h/hs920_01/hs920_01_dfu_eng.pdf but I need to point out that the electronics on each of these shavers are designed for the batteries which are attached so the NiCads and the NiMH cells for these shavers are not interchangeable and can damage the control module if the wrong type of battery pack is installed. There are several aftermarket suppliers of battery packs for your 915RX. The first one I found is at http://www.apexbattery.com/norelco-915rx-battery-miscellaneous-miscellaneous-devices-norelco-batteries.html and it shows the battery pack's specs. As for the different heads used on Philips shavers. the HQ4 is the Micro Action version of the old HQ3 Double Action heads with the only difference being a microgroove machined into the surface of each head for a closer shave. The HQ4+ adds the improved lifters on each cutter which lifts the whiskers slightly higher than before, again for a closer shave. The HQ3, HQ4 and HQ4+ heads are interchangeable. The HQ5 heads are the Reflex Action heads which are not interchangeable with the other models as the cams and mounts are different. The Reflex Action line is about 10 years old now and have since been supplanted by the Quadra, the Sensotec/Spectra, the SmartTouch/Speed XL and now the arcitec liness whose heads are are again not interchangeable with the other product lines. I hope this helps.

Mr. Steelbeard,
I have a Norelco 900rx and it needs batteries. What "bit" is needed to remove the case screws? Appears to be torx or some such. Doesn't look like Phillips or flat blade will work. Whatever it is do you also have the size? I know they are soldered and that is not a problem.
Thanks in advance
Jim Kosmyna
Thanks for your question, Jim. You need a Torx T9 screwdriver. They are available at hardware stores and home improvement centers with a good selection of hand tools. I should point out that the screws where the sideburn trimmer is are in recessed holes so I suggest bringing the shaver with you when shopping for a Torx screwdriver to make sure you get one that fits. I hope this helps.

Mr. Steelbeard,
I own a Braun Activator and yesterday all the lights on the charger/cleaner went out. When I plug the cord into the shaver it does not charge it. The shaver still works.
Could this be a bad cord? I hate to spend $25 on a new cord and not have it work.
Thanks for your help,
Chuck Allin
You're welcome, Chuck and thanks for your note. If you think the problem is with the power cord itself, you can do a continuity test if you have an ohmmeter. If the meter shows zero ohms for both sides of the cord, then the cord is good. If it shows infinite ohms on at least one of the sides, then the cord is bad. You could go to a shaver repair shop if you don't have an ohmmeter and ask them to try out the cord and the charger/cleaner. I hope this helps.

I would like to find a less expensive solution for Braun's "Clean & Renew". Would it be possible simple to refill the cartridges with inexpensive rubbing alcohol?
Thanks for your note, George. That is not a good idea. If I recall correctly, a lubricant is in the formulation. The Braun cleaning solution has been extensively discussed in the Electric Razor Rap message board at http://www.shavermeister.com so I suggest consulting that or post your own inquiry if you can't find the earlier messages. I hope this helps.

Mr Steelbeard
What follows is a query I emailed customer service at Norelco----
You submitted following inquiry:
I just purchased your 8040x razor. Why would you design such a wonderfull high tech razor so that it must be unplugged when charged and plugged back in to charge? My old 5615 Advantage has been plugged in well over 15 years. Given the 8040's design, what is the risk? And if this risk is real, why was it not designed out? Many similar appliances do not share such inconvenience.
Sincerely.
Gary
The response was as follows---
Dear Mr. Long,
Thank you for your email to Philips Customer Care.
We understand that you wanted to know what's the reason of having this Philips Norelco Moisturizing Shaving System unplugged and plugged back when charging. We apologize for the inconvenience.
We have a separate department that supports this product. To provide the best customer care and problem determination, please call our DAP-Norelco department at 1-800-243-3050.
For other concerns about Philips products, you may email us again through www.philipsusa.com. Please do not reply to this email message.
Mr Steel Beard, Can YOU provide a response to my inquiry?
Sincerely
Gary
Thanks for sharing your inquiry with Philips DAP, Gary. I have always felt that a company's customer service department is only as good as the person who responds to the question. I've had those who were very knowledgeable and helpful and others who were totally clueless. I hope you did phone the Philips DAP Norelco customer care department in the meantime. As for my theory, I believe Underwriters Laboratories and similar organizations which approve the safety of electrical appliances want it made clear for safety reasons that electric shavers used wet pose a possible electrical shock hazard if the shaver is used in a wet environment while plugged into an electrical outlet. I have not seen a wet/dry shaver so far from any company which is designed to be used wet while plugged in. If you're wondering about why you can't leave the charging stand plugged in while storing the shaver in it, I believe it's because Philips does not want it to use more electicity than needed. Philips is trying to make their products more "green". Philips maintains a web site on this subject at http://www.misc.philips.com/sustainability/gb_en/ I hope this answers your question.

Hello,
I am confused as I saw on the Norelco web site the speed XL 8140 XL and not the 8150 or 8151 ones. I went to several shops (Fry's, Target, Wall Mart etc ) and I found the 3 models. But nowhere was I able to find the differences between the 3, while their prices are similar. Would you be able to tell me the differences?
Thank you very much in advance
Regards
Patrice Lamare
Thanks for your question, Patrice. All three models mentioned share the same owner's manual. You can see a PDF of that manual at http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/8/8150xl_43/8150xl_43_dfu_eng.pdf In a nutshell, the obvious difference is that the 8140 lacks a battery low indicator light. With the recent model changeover, Philips Norelco has discontinued most of the Speed XL models in the USA except for the 8140. In Canada, Philips still offers the HQ8140 and HQ8150. I believe the 8151 model was a promotional version of the 8150. I hope this helps.

Thanks for your note, Carlton. Looking at the service manuals I have access to, I noticed that the trimmer assemblies are considered by Philips to be one unit so there is no blow up diagram of the trimmer assembly. Hello
I was interested in information on the best electric shaver for shaving my head. I have typical male pattern baldness and I need to shave my head every day. Im always cutting my head with a blade razor and wanted to try an electric shaver. Any comments would be appreciated. Thank you.
Best Regards
Robert
Thanks for your note, Robert. As a bald person, but with a few scattered hairs on my scalp, I shave the top of my head myself. Most of the Philips shavers currently available have the reflex action heads which adjust to the contours of your face (or head) in a three dimensional manner. I would suggest either the 7100 or 7200 series of moderately priced Philips shavers which do a great job for the money. I hope this helps.

My electric shaver experiences seem to be hugely at variance with what I read in your postings and I was wondering how rare a case I am. I have a tough beard and sensitive skin. I cant use blades because even the very best leave my face raw. I have used electric shavers from every major manufacturer. Even with the very best, a shave takes a minimum of 15 minutes. And yes, I wait at least 20 minutes after getting up to shave, wash and dry my beard before shaving, etc. Norelco cutter heads last two years? How about 90 days, with a sharpening after 60 days. Seven or eight shaves per charge? Three is more like it for me. Same thing for Remington, Braun, Panasonic, etc. Im not complaining, mind you, thats just how it is for me. I pretty much figured I was a fairly typical guy, but from what I see on you pages, I guess not.
Thanks,
Mr. Tungsten Beard
Thanks for your note, Mr. Tungsten Beard. Now that's a tough beard! Have you tried the cheap battery operated shavers priced at less than $20 to find out how they perform compared to the more expensive shavers? I was given a Titanium Turbo myself and it gives a surprisingly good shave for the price.

I took my backup Norelco 725RL to Europe and I thought it was 110/220 automatic voltage switching. I used a European plug/prong switcher rather than a transformer/plug switcher and it worked for two days and then the shaver died on me. I've opened the unit and tested the motor and at 12 vdc it works. The circuit board appears to be the problem. I'm pretty sure a capacitor is blown. I was wondering if anyone has any experience repairing this model or a copy of the circuit board schematic?
Thanks for your note, Leonard. The Norelco 725RL is 120 volts ONLY. If you read the information about this shaver in the whisker chamber when you remove the head assembly, it will clearly say that. The circuit board module on Philips Norelco shavers are monolithic and there are no schematics for the module available. Unfortunately, modules for discontinued shavers are very hard to find. You'll probably have better luck shopping at resale shops or rummage sales and obtain a used 725RL for next to nothing to obtain parts. I hope this helps.

Hi and thanks for such an informative site. Here's my problem: I need to purchase a shaver/trimmer to shave my head every week, but on the day that I shave it, I would like to have the two-day-growth look. That's why I am shying away from shavers and thinking trimmers. My barber uses a short stubby trimmer to give me a cut. I would like your advise on what to purchase to do the job myself. Thanks
R. Saade
Thanks for your ntoe, Radwan. There are several good trimmers in the marketplace which seem to fit your needs. The feature I would look for is the height adjustment. How many millimeters do you want to hair to be? I suggest comparing the different trimmers on line to determine it will give you the look you want. One of my sponsored links, Mercury Shaver Centre in Toronto has a page on the trimmers they offer at http://www.shavercentre.com/trimmers.html You can check the features of each model. I hope this helps.

I've been using a Remington MS900 for a year, and decided to try the Norelco Arcitec.
While I get an equally close shave from both, the Arcitec leaves no 5 o'clock shadow while the Remington does. If both are even in closeness, why the visual difference?
Greg
Thanks for your question, Greg. I believe the patented Lift & Cut heads on the Philips Norelco shavers are the difference. The Lift & Cut heads incorporate lifters which pull the whiskers slightly before cutting. The cut whiskers are then released below the skin line. I hope this helps.

Hello Sir,
I was hoping you could help me. I have a Braun 7526 and the slider switch got thrown off track internally and is not functioning properly. It is especially hard to turn off, and the blue button does not push in anymore I attempted to take it apart, but could not figure it out, and did not want to force anything. Do you know where I can find a diagram or schematic so I can disassemble this myself, or would you recommend otherwise? (repair shop, replacement, etc.). Thanks for your time.
Best,
Jim
Thanks for your note, Jim. I would love to give you the URL for the Braun Syncro 7526 (type 5493) service manual, but unfortunately, the links I give similar to the one shown immediately below for older Braun shaver service manuals is from an archive site which preserves dead links. The directory at http://web.archive.org/web/20041025223715/63.230.9.155/braun/Srv_Man/SHAVER/ dates this list back to 2002. If you look at this directory, you will see that the model and type numbers shown above are not listed. There are some Braun shaver mavens at the Electric Razor Rap message board at http://shavermeister.com who are familiar with the Syncro. I hope one of them can help you. In case you haven't tried Braun customer support already, they have a web page at http://www.braun.com/na/contact/servicepartners/americas.country.html I hope this helps.

Thanks for your note, Klaus. Braun shavers tend to have caps which cover the screws. You would pry off the caps to access the screws. If you look at the PDF shown at http://web.archive.org/web/20041026164908/63.230.9.155/braun/Srv_Man/SHAVER/5703.pdf you will see that the caps are on the bottom of the shaver. I hope this helps.

Long story made short. I used Norelco shavers for 30 years. Switched to Braun and liked the shave but got tired of replacing the foil heads. This morning I found a Norelco 905RX at an estate sale. I paid $5, took it home, cleaned it (all the removable parts in boiling water and vinegar), charged it up and it seems to be running fine. Think itll keep going? Also, which way does the adjustable ring work the higher the number the closer the shave, or the opposite? Thanks for your help.
Danny Mac
You're welcome, Danny and thanks for your note. Your 905RX will work fine as long as the rechargeable battery pack inside the shaver holds up. This model is of early 1990s vintage and a rechargeable battery pack has an average lifespan of five years before they lose their ability to hold a charge. So I would suggest checking out how long the battery will last before requiring recharging. As for the adjustable ring, the "1" setting is for the most sensitive skin. The "9" setting give the closest shave at the expense of comfort. I hope this helps.

Dear Mr. Steel Beard,
We Electric Shaver Page fans would rather pay exorbitant quick shipping fees for the latest Philips Norelco shaver products than wait in line for an iPhone.
My Cool Skin shavers have served me well, but their quickly dulling blades have not. I have been looking for some design improvement from Philips Norelco.
Thanks, Gary for alerting me to where I could purchase a Cool Skin 8040X. I bought it specifically because I never found top-of-the-line features worth the investment, and it had a faster charging time than the next less expensive model. Here's my experience so far:
I have a heavy beard and prefer wet shaving. I have been using Cool Skin shavers for about three years, and abandoned the Nivea stuff early on. Instead, I use a thin layer of Neutrogena Razor Defense shave gel on my wet face.
My first reaction to the new 8040X design was to question how this expensive, tiny toy-looking plastic device had enough power to cut whiskers. Shaving with it seemed really weird, because the three heads were completely in the open, not masked or part of a large assembly, as nearly every rotary blade shaver has been.
Because I was more aware of the actual cutting surface, I seemed to "take aim," rather than just shave. The results were at least as good as all previous Cool Skin shavers with new, sharp cutters I have used. I have not yet tried the detachable beard trimmer. I am wondering how long the cutting blades will plow through my whiskers before I have to replace them.
Gary, thank you for your years of service to both men and women who are interested in men's shaving satisfaction and the shavers they use.
Cordially,
Rick Barrow
Tannersville, PA
You're welcome, Rick and thank you for your comments giving your experience with your new shaver. I'm glad I could help. For the benefit of readers outside the USA, Philips markets the shaver Rick mentioned outside the USA as the HS8040.

I have been pretty much an exclusive user of Norelco shavers through the years. As new technologies come along and I need a new replacement Itry it. Currently I am using a Norelco 8170 razor. A supposed advantage being the combs have a full set of openings as opposed to a partial set. More openings equate with more cutting capacity. My problem is that I do not have a thick beard. I can shave every other day and get a clean shave. However if I shave daily I do not get a close shave and I find myself constantly going over the same area with little success not to mention shaver burn. Any one out there with any suggestions?
Change of razor would be okay too.
Bill
Thanks for your question, Bill. If you are patient, Philips (which makes Philips and Philips Norelco shavers) is introducing a new shaver called the "arcitec" which has the most flexible head yet and is supposed to get more whiskers the first time to take care of the irritation problem. I hope this helps.

If I remove the two screws at the charger socket end of the razor, the two razor halves still can't be separated so I suspect there's another screw hidden somewhere else. What am I missing? I hope you can help. I'm now the proud owner of a Norelco 8894XL, which has a uiversal voltage charger. (A really fantastic shaver by the way.) After I bought it, I sent it back for a replacement because it only charged to 56 min. The replacement had 103 mins on it. I've now re-charged it, and it only reads 65 mins. Is there a quick fix for this, or is it just a factor of the 240v supply? (I believe the max charge may be registered due to the heat from the batteries.)
Regards,
Alan Gent.
Thanks for your note, Alan. The 8894 has automatic voltage adaptation from 100 to 240 volts at the transformer plug end with an output at the shaver end of 24 volts. Am I correct in assuming that when the "FULL" indicator appears on the display that the number of minutes shown afterwards is 65 minutes? Heat is an enemy of rechargeable batteries so that may be a factor. Were the batteries fully discharged before recharging? I think I kept the shaver running for three minutes after the display read "0" minutes before I decided to turn it off and recharge it. The display read 106, if I recall correctly, after I unplugged the shaver when it read "FULL." One idea is to keep the shaver running until it reads "0" minutes or when the shaver stops running than recharge it. It will be interesting to see the number of minutes the display reads after the display reads "FULL." I hope this helps.

Hi Gary - thanks for your site, and the query postings and responses which I've found to be very helpful in trying to decide on a replacement for my now dead Philishave.
I've decided to go for Braun foil design as I was only passably pleased with the rotary Philishave results and generally preferred to wet shave for closeness and accuracy around my goatee and 'tache.
I've pretty much decided based on price that I would like either a Braun Contour or Braun Flex XP II model and would like to be able to wash the head rather than use the self-clean system. I get the impression that the only real difference between the Flex XP II and the Contour is the foil pattern. Is that correct ?
Also is the different in foil pattern worth bothering about or is the Flex XP pretty much as effective as the Contour one ?
Also, would you say that the micro-vibrating head of the Syncro makes SO much difference that it is worth spending the extra money (which, as always is not so easily come by!) ?
thanks again!
Ethan
Thanks for your note, Ethan. My opinions on the Braun models are based on the postings in the Electric Razor Rap message board. The Contour's foil pattern (similar to the higher end Braun models) are a big thing in my opinion because they are supposed to get more of the longer whiskers which foil shavers usually miss. The Syncro is now two product lines down from Braun's current top of the line. But the opinions I'm gettnig show the differences between the Contour and the Syncro are minimal as far as shaving performance is concerned. You may wish to check out the Electric Razor Rap postings on the Braun models and ask your own questions if you can't find the answers you want. I hope this helps.

I have a Philips 5885. It has worked amazing for steadily for years. Recently it has been acting strangely. When I plug it in to recharge, and it appears full I switch it on. Then it starts this Learning Sequence and shows 2 shaves remaining but doesn't come on. It has had quite a few NiCd pack changes with no problems. Is it worth fixing? I am handy with a VAR meter and a soldier iron to a certain degree. Any direction on what I should do is appreciated.
Jerry
Thanks for your question, Jerry. I believe the control module for your shaver has gone bad. I tried to fix a similar shaver, but made a mistake which ruined the control module. Unfortunately, the control module is not easy to repair and there is no schematic to repair the control module with. When I got my replacement shaver from a sponsor of the Electric Shaver Page, he offered to repair the old shaver for me so I sent it to that shop and they still have it because replacement control modules are very hard to obtain. That shaver has served you well for over 10 years, I believe, which is beyond the average life span for rechargeable shavers. I think it's time for a new one. Philips is about to introduce two new and radically different product lines which you may be interested, or you may get one of the closeout models at a good price. I hope this helps.

Can you tell me how to determine the required polarity when replacing the NiCD battery in a Norelco T6000 beard trimmer? There is a blue wire and a red one. Is the red the positive lead?
Thanks. Dave.
Thanks for your question, Dave. Since I still have a dismantled old Philips Definition beard trimmer similar to your Norelco model, I can tell you that the red and blue leads actually go the the trimmer's circuit board. On the circuit board, the battery pack I have does not have any polarity markings, but it does show that the ridged end is at the bottom towards the cord socket. The end without the ridge is at the end where the wires you are asking about are. The red lead is on the outside end of board next to the board's switch and the blue lead is on the inside side of the switch. I hope this helps.

Mr. Steel Beard,
I hope you can advise me. I have a Philishave Model 985 razor, and have replaced the original NiCd batteries several times. The razor only takes about 15 mins to charge the batteries, and more often than not, 'runs out' when the LCD display still shows about 15 mins or so. I know that 15 mins is too short a charge time for NiCds, and my question is: Is the razor faulty, and should the charge time be longer? It may be the reason the batteries 'don't like it'.
Thanks for your note, Alan. Were the replacement battery packs the exact Philips part number? If not, did it have the exact specifications as the original battery pack? If yes, I'm wondering if the shaver's circuit board has gone bad. You could ask the shaver mavens at the Electric Razor Rap message board at http://www.shavermeister.com for their opinions. I hope this helps.

I have a Phillishave 5865 that has been giving good service for many years....still holds a charge. I am off to Ireland for a few weeks and need to know the charging voltage that I can use my shaver on. Most modern plug-in small electronics can use anywhere from 100 to about 250 volts. I only want to buy a plug adaptor if possible, not a voltage converter. Trouble is I've lost my manual that would give me the info and can't seem to find anything online. The modern models do allow this voltage range.

Thanks for your note, Earl. I believe that your Philishave HQ5865 shaver is a Reflex Action model. Thanks,
Stephen
P.S. I am from Flint too :)
Thanks for your question, Stephen. Braun has a habit of hiding screws under pry-off plugs. There used to be a web site with PDFs of Braun service manuals, but it was shut down before the Activator models, including your 8585 were introduced. The Internet Archive web site still has it at http://web.archive.org/web/20041025223715/63.230.9.155/braun/Srv_Man/SHAVER/ and you may find some hints in there. I would suggest asking the same question to the Braun users as the Electric Razor Rap message board at http://www.shavermeister.com and ask if anyone knows how to disassemble a Braun Activator model. I hope this helps.

Hey,
I'm going to order up some HQ9 heads from eBay to retrofit my 8894, but I'm considering one more transformation: shavers.co.uk list the SmartTouch XL metal case here:
http://www.shavers.co.uk/shopping.php?product_id=539 , but clearly states that it's for the SmartTouch XL range only. However, it does look like the 8894 would fit regardless. Any idea if this is the case?
Thanks,
Tom
Thanks for your note, Tom. That's a good question to ask the Electric Razor Rap mavens. The contoured metal case, being contoured implies that it will only work with the Philips SmartTouch XL line because of its unique shape. The HQ8894 Sensotec may be slightly different enough so it will not be a snug fit. I posted this message in Electric Razor Rap to see if we get an answer. It's at http://jimelliott.suddenlaunch2.com/index.cgi?board=talk&action=display&num=1176342443 I hope this helps.

Hi, Mr. Steel Beard,
I have a Remington R-9270 shaver. Now the battery can only hold a few shaves. I want to replace the battery.
I found the replacement battery on the web but have difficulty to find the instruction to take the shaver apart. Do you have such information ?
Thanks and appreciate your response.

Thanks for your request, Tommy. Fortunately, I did find a PDF of that shaver's manual at http://www.remington-products.com/manuals/ib_mftitaniumu.pdf which includes instructions for battery removal. I hope ths helps.

MR STEEL BEARD,
I have a Remington model M2830 and want to change the batteries..... HOW do I open the shaver to get to the batteries?????
Thanks
Pat Brady - Euless Texas
Thanks for your question, Pat. Usually, Remington has PDFs of their manuals which often has instructions for battery removal before properly discarding the shaver. Unfortunately, they do not list the discontinued Intercept models. This product line is made by the Austrian company Payer and is also known as the Zebra line. You can always contact Remington whose toll free number in the USA is 1-800-736-4648. But if you need to contact Payer, there is a list of European E-mail addresses at http://www.payershaver.com/english/e_menu_right/kontakt.php I hope this helps.

Mr. Steelbeard,
I have been shaving my head for some time now and have decided that I am tired of all of the cuts and burns. My local appliance dealer is recommending a Wahl 4000 (7398-500).
I am fine with simple, solid appliances but seeing that this thing looks like a brick, am concerned about it's age and serviceability.
Do you know how old this might be and whether I can reasonably expect to get replacement parts and batteries for a few years?
Thanks for your advice,
Dave Washburn
Grand Rapids, MI
Thanks for your question, Dave. As with all rechargeable shavers, I would say that the soldered-on battery pack inside the shaver tends to last an average of five years before they need replacing. Then it comes to if the price of replacing the battery pack is worth it compared to simply getting a new shaver. As for foil and cutting bar availability, Wahl is a long-established company which should still provide a steady source of bars and foils, but as time goes by, you may find it more convenient to obtain it directly I did notice in the Wahl web site at http://consumer.wahl.com that they not only offer the bar and foil, but also batteries for several of their rechargeable products. I hope this helps.

Hello, I just wanted to know if I can put HQ9 heads on my 8894XL? Can you please respond?
Thanks for your question, Chris. My short answer is a conditional yes. First you need to cut notches on the HQ9 heads so it can fit onto the Sensotec/Spectra head assembly. There is a Electric Razor Rap thread which tells how at http://jimelliott.suddenlaunch2.com/index.cgi?board=talk&action=display&num=1125188408 I hope this helps.

As I was looking for information on MONACO Mechanical Shaver, the Google search landed me on your page.
There I found a couple of mentions of this shaver, by the way, referred to as "Breveté". Well, this ward means "Patented" in French, and since the shaver was made in Monaco (or possibly in Switzerland, and marketed through Monaco), it is logical to asume that it was patented, and so marked, in French.
I have this device in my possesion for many years, and it still in excellent condtion, except for its steel foil on the shaving head, which is a round and slightly more than about 1" (one inch) in diameter, and which is now torn. My problem is that I can not find a replacement, nor can I make one myself, cannibalizing for instance a larger screen from another shaver by cutting it to size, since the kind of steel employed there is not amenable to cutting by tools available to a handyman.
So, my question is, obviously, where can I find this replacement? I only need this 30mm round foil, and I the shaver would become functional again.
Thanks for your question, MS. There used to be a place a few years ago which offered custom foils for rare or unique shavers. I can't find it now. The shaver sometimes shows up on eBay and I found one eBay shop listing it at http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-VINTAGE-BREVETE-S-G-D-G-MECHANICAL-SHAVER-MONACO_W0QQitemZ200038379161QQcategoryZ12QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem so you can check it out for yourself. I hope this helps and the eBay listed shaver is similar to yours.

Hi Gary
I suffer from razor bumps and, as I don't want to grow a beard, I think the solution to my problem would be an electric razor that will cut hairs shorter than the shortest setting on a beard trimmer (1.5mm), but longer than an electric shaver on a 'senstive' setting (effectively 0mm). I have not been able to find an electric razor/trimmer that will do this. Can you help?
I have seen your recommendations of the Wahl What a Shaver and Remington ES-1000 which are designed to stop ingrowing hairs. Do you know if either of these leave hair in the 0-1.5mm length? Is either one much better than the other?
Thanks for any advice.
Paul.
Thanks for your question, Paul. The ES-1000 is an 'old-school' shaver design before foil shavers became popular. It's designed to straighten whiskers before cutting and gives a "close but not too close" shave because the shaving surface is thicker than the foil shavers' surface. The Wahl model looks like clippers so it's like using an electric hair clipper or a beard trimmer to shave with. I think that design is more condusive to what you're looking for, but it will take longer to shave with that shaver because of the smaller shaving surface. I hope this helps.

Gary,
I use a Norelco 8894. A couple of quick questions for you (I believe I read in one these forums that you also use a Spectra for your shaving needs):
What kind of a pre-shave do you use?
Do you slightly "tug" your skin with your free hand while you shave, like they suggest in the Norelco manual?
How often do you clean your shaver, and what is your cleaning routine?
How often do you change the heads?
What setting do you use (the "sensitivity" setting)?
Thanks very much, and thanks for a GREAT Web site.
Chris
You're welcome, Chris and thanks for your questions. Here are my answers:
1. When humid weather conditions during the summer require it, I use a Remington FaceSaver powder stick.
2. I tend to tug the skin when I encounter hard to shave off whiskers, otherwise I do not.
3. After each shave, I shake off the whiskers. With the Philips HQ8894 I have, I rinse the heads and whisker chamber using hot water whenever the faucet logo appears on the display. After letting the shaver dry, I spray the AL80 lubricant on the heads and let the shaver run for a minute to spread the lubricant around.
4. Philips recommends replacing the heads every two years, but with the HQ8894, there is an indicator which tells when it is time to change the heads.
5. I like the middle setting myself. I hope this helps.

Hi there.
Just came upon your site while surfing for a solution to a problem that I've had for years.
I wet shave daily with an electric razor and get stubble problems on a regular basis. They are NOT ingrowing hairs (this is all I hear when I seek advise & I'm pretty exasperated at this point) - they are rather closer to hairs that stop growing, get really hard, infect and eventually emerge with squeezing, tweezers etc as a small thorn like piece of stubble with the root enlarged & hardened. They are beginning to scar my face as they are so stobborn & frequent.
Please help! I have at least one of these on my face all the time.
Regards
Colm
Thanks for your question, Colm. That's a follicle problem I had not come across before. I am familiar with hairs which stop growing and fall out on their own as well as dormant follicles which become active again. The closest thing I found that could be related to your condition is a problem with beard follicles casually called "spa pool acne." Details at http://www.acnereplies.com/spa_pool_acne.html You could also ask at the http://www.shavermeister.com message board asking if anyone else has had a condition with certain whiskers like yours. I hope this helps.

I have a Philips HQ8150 Speed XL PhilliShave. Im in Hyderabad, India. the Problem is that the shaver doesnt work when the on/off switch is pressed. On connecting to the charger, the battery charges, and shows the blinking light for full battery but the shaver doesnt work.
Any ideas?
Thanks for your question, Ankur. It seems like if the button presses fine but nothing happens that there is something wrong with the shaver's circuit board. I suggest contacting Philips India at their toll free phone number, 1600 224422. You can ask them the location of the nearest Philips authorised repair shop as well if they can help you with the problem. If you got the shaver recently, check the warranty to find out if the shaver is still covered by it. I hope this helps.

First off thank you for the site; it's really nice to see. And thank you in advance for the excellent advice.
I'm having a terrible time trying to get a new shaver after my older 4800 series Norelco busted in Europe (remembered adaptor, forgot converter).
How do I pick a new one? XL, X, XLCC, LC? Could you please tell me what any of these mean?
Does a bigger number mean better? I'm thinking of the 7110x because it's a bigger number than the 6853, 6843, 6613, or 6423 but I think the only advantage is that it's washable ... other than that the plastic construction just looks cheaper and you don't get a little travel case. Are HQ8s better than HQ50s? Any thoughts on the matter? I'm looking towards these less expensive models. I have a beard that grows in full and needs to be shaved daily.
Many, many sincere thanks for your help.
-David
You're welcome, David and thanks for your questions. I'll start with the suffixes which are unique to the Philips Norelco models in the United States. All shaver models sold outside the USA bear the Philips brand name and formerly bore the Philishave brand. Models sold outside the USA bear the HQ prefix. As for the US suffixes, XL is for cord/cordless models, X is for cordless only models, XLCC is for cord/cordless models with the clean and charge unit and LC is for cord only models. Most Philips Norelco models currently sold (except the Reflex Plus line) are washable for cleaning purposes only. The Cool Skin models are wet/dry so use can use it even in the shower and have the built-in lotion dispenser. All Cool Skin models are not supposed to be plugged in so they have the X suffix. Otherwise, I do not recommend the X models for dry shavers as they can only be used cordless so if the batteries lose their charge, you have to wait for the batteries to recharge. With the XL models, you can use the shaver plugged in. As for the dry shaver product lines, I've mentioned that the low end Reflex Plus models in the 6000 series are dry only and is not supposed to get wet. The next line up is the 7100 line and the macho styled 7200 line which have similar shaves. The 8100 Speed XL line has the three rows of cutters as opposed to the two rows with the other lines mentioned. The 9100 SmartTouch XL line uses the same heads as the Speed XL and adds a closeness/comfort adjustment. As for the heads, the HQ9 Speed XL heads are the highest end. The 7100/7200 series use the HQ8 heads. The Cool Skin uses its own heads, the HQ177 for the higher end models and the HQ167 for the lower end models. The HQ55 is for the low end Reflex Plus models (called Super Reflex outside the USA). I hope this answers your questions.

When cleaning my Wahl 4000 razor, I removed the cutter blade assembly and proceeded to brush the top of the exposed razor, the C-ring that holds the spring which keeps tension on the cutter bar assembly fell off into my sink. I was able to retreive the rubber C-ring but the spring went down the drain. Where can I purchase a replacement spring?
Neal Zulauf
Thanks for your question, Neal. For my answer, I'm assuming you're in the USA. Wahl USA has a web page which allows you to find the nearest Wahl authorized service center at http://consumer.wahl.com/service.cfm so you can ask the shops near you if they either have or can obtain your missing spring. I hope this helps.

I am about to venture into the electric razor world after a 12 year absence. I have very sensitive skin, mostly around the neck. My daughters sneaking my razor for their legs doesnt help. I use to own a Norelco triple head many years ago and it was a terrible shave (very irritating). So I went back to blades and only shave every 3 to 4 days (longer if I can get away with it). I have been researching the new Braun shavers and am a little confused. What is the real world difference between the 360 complete, Syncro pro, and the Contour models? From the info on Brauns web site they all seem to have the same basic cutting and foil system. All 3 models even come with their own cleaning stations. I guess what I am asking is the $150 360 that much better than the $70 Contour? Thanks.
Mark Chesterton
Thanks for your note, Mark. I've heard good things about the Braun Contour and my opinion is that the shave is almost on a par with the Activator. So if money is an object, I'd pick the Contour. You can also ask the Braun shaver mavens at http://www.shavermeister.com and I hope this helps.

I have just purchased a Norelco 8160XLCC electric razor and have mixed emotions about this razor. First off, there was no cleaning solution packed with the razor even though it listed it on the package as enclosed. I called Norelco about this, and other concerns, and was told the cleaner was "back ordered" and that I could buy it retail. I questioned about using it without the cleaning fluid and was told that the razor would not charge without the cleaning fluid. I find this hard to believe. I was tempted to return it to the store but instead bought the cleaner and will try the razor. This "cleaning thing" appears to me to be a gimmick to sell cleaning fluid. Since the razor can be cleaned under a faucet I see no need for all that extra "Stuff". I would much prefer a straightforward charging stand. I was also told the razor should be charged with the cord rather than the charging stand or it would not fully charge. ??? Is all this true?? Why not just a razor and charger period.
I like the razor and will give it a good try but still don't like the "gimmicks" or believe the answers given me on the phone. Can you help?
Thanks for listening anyway.
Hardin Lee
You're welcome, Hardin and thanks for your question. Both the cleaning machine and the charging stand are not necessary. The shaver can be charged with the power cord it comes with. I think they are gimmicks anyway. The charging stand, a.k.a. "clock stand" is available separately. One source is at http://www.electricshaverstore.com/get_item_norstand_norelco-deluxe-stand-w-clock-spectra.htm and you can ask them if it can work with a Speed XL 8160XLCC shaver. I don't like charging stands anyway because you have to place it somewhere. I hope this helps.

Dear Mr Steel Beard,
I have got a Braun 8595 ACTIVATOR as a Christmas Gift. I am very impressed with quality and comfort of shaving. Actually I stopped using razor and soap at all.
Because I got also spare replacement foil and the cutters (unfortunately for 360 COMPLETE e.g ."wrong one") as the owner of Braun 8595 ACTIVATOR
I am not sure what to do.
Can you or could anyone tell me if using replacement foil and cutters for "Braun 8995 360 COMPLETE" in the body of "Braun 8595 ACTIVATOR" will do exactly the same shaving as an original Braun 8995 360 COMPLETE. Mechanically they are combatible and the difference might be in the propulsion and gear movement only.
Thank you in advance for your advise

You're welcome, Jan. From the postings in the Electric Razor Rap message board at http://www.shavermeister.com, I understand that the 360 and Activator foils are interchangeable, but I suggest looking through the messages or, if you can't find the postings, asking yourself. I hope this helps.

Hi
My father lives in England and given the cheaper prices for electric shavers here, is thinking of buying a Norelco shaver next time he is in the US (probably a SmartTouch). Though the descriptions of these shavers say that they can be switched to the correct voltage for other locations, do you know if it is possible to buy the shaver with a charger which has a cable/plug suitable for use in England rather than use an adapter which I guess would be the alternative?
Thanks
Andrew Field
Thanks for your question, Andrew. Philips Norelco shavers sold in the USA only come with the plug for North American mains outlets. Because Philips sells the same shavers world wide, you could obtain a mains cord which fits the desired shaver. Because he's thinking about a SmartTouch XL model, http://www.shavers.co.uk offers a spare cord for this model which you can see for yourself at http://www.shavers.co.uk/shopping.php?product_id=146 I hope this helps.

Greetings,
I saw a recent post asking about replacing batteries on a "venerable old Norelco 885RX". I just went through the same process as he -- I sure missed the excellent battery life between charges. (I was confronted with the NiCd vs. NiMh question too and decided I had to stay with the NiCd.) I opened the shaver and after searching the net, I decided I would give it a whirl.
It was an easy process. The circuit board is in two parts with the batteries on the top, and the two connected by a plug connection at the front end of the razor. Simply desolder the old batteries and solder in the new. I'd not ever desoldered anything before this (I researched briefly on 'desoldering'). and used copper wicking which worked great. I bought the new batteries from totalvac.com Now my 885rx is in top form again. I hope this is helpful and not "out of line" to post on your site. Thanks for a great and entertaining resource!
dal
You're welcome, DAL and thanks for sharing your experience. You did the right thing by using the same type of battery pack as the old one as the recharging electronics are made for the batteries they are designed for and I was told that using a different type of battery pack can damage the circuit board.

I am desperately looking for a Panasonic ES843 shaver, or an updated replacement, but can only find sources for replacement foils. Do you know if there is anything available that approximates the compactness and performance of this shaver? I'm looking for a battery-operated model, small enough to slip into a shirt pocket.
Thanks much.

Thanks for your question, Andrew. Based upon that type of shaver you're looking for, I looked at the Panasonic USA web site and found a literal "pocket" shaver which is their ES518N. The Panasonic URL for this shaver is too long to fit here, but you can Google the model number, ES518N, to find on line shops which sell this shaver. I hope this helps.

I have a question about the Norelco razors that one can clean under the tap SmartTouch, Speed-XL, Cool Skin, etc. Does one still need to go though the monthly cleaning process of disassembling the heads, lubricating, and so forth?
Thanks.
You're welcome, Andrew and thanks for the question. Cleaning the entire assembly of waterproof Philips shavers under the tap may not catch every whisker so it is a good idea to disassemble the heads (making sure you don't mix the combs and cutters) and rinse the individual parts. Any remaining gunk could be removed with the help of a cotton swab before rinsing again. As for lubricating, I do that every time I rinse the shaver after allowing it to dry. I hope this helps.

Also, do you have anything against my replacing the original NiCd AA's with NiMH AA's?
Thanks,

Thanks for your note, Steve. I've seen service manuals on line through pay services. The 885RX model you have was also marketed as the HS885 so you can try that model number as well. I couldn't find that immediately. You can always E-mail Philips at http://www.support.philips.com asking how to obtain one. The electonics inside the shaver are designed for the rechargeable batteries installed in the shaver. So NiCad and NiMH batteries are NOT interchangeable. I hope this helps.

Hi---Im looking for comments and experience with the new Braun 360 Complete razor. Specifically is it improved enough over the last model to warrant switching. Thank you, Jerry
You're welcome, Jerry. My first thought was to go to the Electric Razor Rap at http://www.shavermeister.com to find postings on the Braun 360 Complete, but they are switching hosts next month so the exact URL for the thread of the discussion may not work after the switch is made. You can still search that in the meantime, but I would suggest using your favorite search engines instead using the keywords "Braun 360" + review. Most of the reviews are positive which I read, BTW, but the views are mixed about switching from the Braun Activator and there is an even newer Braun model now available in Europe called the Pulsonic which The Electric Razor Rap already has messages on. If you can't find the Electric Razor Rap postings, you can always start a new thread. I hope this helps.

Thanks for your note, Mike. Philips maintains PDF files for several of their products including your shaver. The PDF for the Norelco 8894XL is at http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/8/8894xl_48/8894xl_48_dfu_eng.pdf and it indicates that the alert will stay on for two weeks to allow you time to obtain the HQ8 replacement heads.
