What is therapeutic massage?

Touch is a basic human need. When applied with the proper intent and expertise is can bring about relaxation, relief from pain and the onset of healing. It can increase mental clarity and alertness, improve muscle tone, circulation, and the functioning of the nervous and respiratory systems. It can enhance athletic performance, improve range and quality of motion and prevent, rehabilitate or accelerate recovery from injury.

Therapeutic massage is NOT a replacement from medical treatment. Should your condition require medical attention a referral will be made to the appropriate qualified professional.

Therapeutic massage takes place in a safe, non-sexual environment that respects your privacy, integrity and unique requirements for the session.

Massage as a partnership

Massage is often thought of as a passive form of relaxation. While it can be just that, it can also provide a powerful, physiologically-based, treatment-oriented means to improved health and productivity. I believe that these effects are best acheived through your active participation. This may include doing stretches and strengthening exercises between sessions, making changes in your diet, posture or habits and active involvement in the session itself. You are invited to help create your ideal massage by choosing the music, temperature and lighting and determining pressure and areas of the body to be worked.

Massage methods I offer

(most sessions will incorporate a combination of these methods)

Swedish Therapeutic Massage

In Swedish Massage therapeutic effects are achieved through the application of manual techniques to the soft tissue of the skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia. Techniques including stroking, friction, vibration, percussion, kneading, stretching, compression and joint movement. Lotion is used.

Sports Massage

Sports Massage is the application of specific strokes and techniques to enhance athletic performance, prevent injury and accelerate recovery from sporting activities and events

Normalization of Soft Tissue (NST)

NST is treatment-oriented massage applied to bring relief from pain, increase range of motion, lengthen and strengthen muscles and improve quality of muscle and connective tissue and postual dysfunctions resulting from muscular imbalances. Techniques include myo-fascial release, trigger point therapy, lymphatic drainage, muscle energy techniques, and other forms of neuro-muscular therapy.

Orthopedic Massage

Orthopedic massage addresses disorders of the musculoskeletal structures. Some common disorders that can be helped by massage include peripheral nerve disorders, fractures, dislocations, subluxations, kyphosis and scoliosis deformities of the spine, eliminatory dysfunctions, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and paralysis.

Zen Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a Japanese form of bodywork based on traditional Chinese medicine. Like acupuncture it addresses the flow of energy (Ki) through the body. Pressure is applied with thumbs, fingers, palms and elbows to release any energy blockages and to stimulate its flow through the body.

Policies:

What you can expect as a client

Complete confidentiality. All health information or personal conversation during a massage is strictly confidential. Health-related information will only be released with your written consent or if legally subpeonaed.

Privacy. You will have complete privacy while dressing and undressing. You will be covered by a sheet at all times with the exception of the body part that is being massaged.

Hygienic massage environment. Because of the intimate nature of massage, impeccable hygiene is essential. You can expect it from me and I will expect the same from you.

Ethical and respectful treatment. In accordance with the Massage Therapists Code of Ethics, I am dedicated to upholding the highest standards of ethical practice established by the profession.

What I expect from you

Adherence to a Drug-free policy. Because massage increases the circulation of blood through the body it can amplify the effects of alcohol and other intoxicants in a potentially harmful manner. For your safety, your massage will be forfeited should you arrive intoxicated. You will be charged for the session.

Notification of any medications being used. Massage can alter or intensify the effects of certain medications. Please inform me of all medications you are currently taking and of any changes in medications as they occur.

Prompt arrival for sessions. Our time together is valuable, please arrive on time. In consideration of other clients, no matter when you arrive, the session will end at the orginally scheduled time.

Receipt of prompt payment. Full payment is due upon completion of the session. Cash or personal checks are accepted.

Notification of cancellation 24 hours in advance. Clients' who do not comply with this policy will be billed for the massage.

Ethical and respectful treatment. I reserve the right to terminate the massage at any time if a just and reasonable cause exists.

My education and experience

I am an honors (4.0) graduate of the Boulder College of Massage Therapy (2000), one of the world's leading institutions for the study of therapeutic massage. It is a 1000-hour program providing training in several modalities of massage therapy (see Massage Methods I Offer) as well as study in anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, ethics, postural assessment, hydrotherapy and kinesiology. I have advanced training in assessment and treatment of Acceleration Injuries (Whiplash), sports injuries of the lower limb and lumbar spine and myofascial treatment for low back pain.

I am specially trained to provide support to athletes. As a nationally ranked ultrarunner I am intimately familiar with the stresses brought on by athletic exertion and the strategies and methods that improve performance and help prevent injury.
