I love AVG anti-virus! I think it offers the best mix of security protection balanced by performance. In my experience, some anti-virus (AKA "Internet security package") programs seem to steal the very life out of your computer, slowing it down to a crawl. Norton Internet Security 2006 was perhaps the worst example of this unfortunate problem. The AVG company seems to "get it just right," providing excellent antivirus and antispyware protection without placing a heavy load on your computer to provide that protection. AVG is available in 3 ways: as a free download (unlimited free protection), as a free demo of their "better" product (to be purchased after 30 days), or as a free demo of their "best" Internet security product (to be purchased after 30 days). The "better" and "best" products offer expanded security coverage such as firewall protection, SPAM removal from email. Users of AVG Version 7 or 8.0 have probably been seeing this pop-up announcement lately:
If you click on the Download now button, note that you will be downloading and installing the AVG commercial product requiring payment after 30 days! What most of you want is the AVG Free product which is available by clicking here (choose the Free AVG version on the left, then Save when prompted, and Run when the download is complete). On AVG's website, there is a new "Premium for Free" offering that involves getting the commercial AVG product "for free" by purchasing or trying other non-AVG products and services using a service called Trialpay. Many other companies are trying this gimmick too. Most people do not want this because you are required to purchase other products to get "points" or "credit" towards your AVG Premium product. Sometimes customers call me asking why their "free" AVG is asking for money; usually the problem is that they have downloaded the "better" or "best" product instead of the free version, and now the 30 day trial has expired. AVG Free will not ask for money or demand payment of any kind; if you see something like that, you may be dealing with a hacker-hoax to steal your credit card, be careful. How can AVG offer a free antivirus? Well, they are a small company looking to gain a wide following (which they have), they hope you will consider purchasing their "better" or "best" products if you liked the free AVG, and they make "real" money from corporate and educational site licenses. Maybe someday Google will buy them for $500 million dollars? Who knows, that has happened before! Download AVG 8.5 Free antivirus by clicking here, choose the Free AVG version on the left, then click Save when prompted to save the AVG Free software on your computer. When the download completes, click Run to begin installation. For comprehensive protection, AVG offers several
products requiring a purchase, check them out at
For the record, I am not a reseller of AVG nor do I have a financial interest in the AVG company. Call Ed Sterling at 978-779-6058 from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m.
