"What do you think of Windows Vista?"

Unfortunately, "I don't get it." Windows Vista seems to be the biggest "non-event" that Microsoft has ever produced. It reminds me of Windows ME in 1999, which was a huge disappointment and a lot of trouble for the users who got stuck with it. Most of the other transitions of Windows have been exciting and worth the "pain" of conversion. Windows 95 to Windows 98, Windows 98 to Windows 2000, Windows 2000 to Windows XP, all definitely worth it. But Windows ME (1999) and Vista are both big-letdowns that did not offer anything substantial for the effort of the upgrade.

"Change for change's sake" seems to be the essence of Windows Vista. It baffles me....why did Microsoft have to change so many time-honored names and icons that worked just fine? I have learned over the years that people hate change, it drives them crazy. If there was something new and exciting in Vista that was worth the pain and the cost, I guess I could understand it. But Vista seems to be Windows XP wrapped in a mystery.

The much-touted "Aero Glass" desktop that requires an expensive graphics card in the PC offers little more than a "translucent" window feature. You might have thought it was going to offer some amazing 3-D desktop for all the hype and expense of having an "Aero compatible" graphics card in your PC.... phooey! What a let-down.

Then consider there are 4 versions of Windows Vista. That's a lot of confusion for the average computer user. Vista Home Basic should be adequate for the average person. That was true for Windows XP Home:  it really was fine for the average user, yet XP Professional was touted as "less bug ridden" and essential for home networking, both of which are completely untrue.

You may have read about a new system called Windows 7 that supposedly will replace Vista. I have tested this and I have found that it is basically Vista that runs faster! The appearance is exactly like Vista, nothing new, but it seems to have eliminated a lot of the irritating "Are you really sure you want to do that?" messages.
