What is the best antivirus program to use ? Many years ago, the only antivirus program around was McAfee. It was an excellent product until they created McAfee Antivirus V5.0. From then on, it seemed to take too many resources to do its job, and seemed to do more harm (to performance) than good (for protection). They really lost me with McAfee V6.0 Gold. It locked up my computer and I could not start it. This also happened to a number of my customers, some of whom had to wipe out their computers to get started again. A very sad tale. McAfee showed no interest when I called. Then Norton (Symantec Corp.) came along and became a significant player in the antivirus field. Norton Antivirus 2002 was a really excellent product that I found far superior to McAfee. Norton 2003 was also an excellent product. Things started to get complicated in 2004 with the release of Norton Internet Security 2004, which tried to deal with spyware but could not seem to get it right. Things got much worse in 2005 and downright awful with the release of Norton 2006. Installing Norton Internet Security 2006 was like driving with the brakes on! Like sailing a ship with the anchor dragging! It seemed to sap all the power out of your computer. Now thankfully, Norton 360 has appeared in 2007, and it is getting good reviews. It sounds like Norton is getting back on track. BUT THAT SAID, WHAT IS THE BEST ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM AROUND? I recommend Grisoft's AVG Antivirus program. It
is free, it is excellent, it doesn't hurt your computer. AVG Free is a special completely free no-hassle no-nag no-personal-information version of the company's main AVG Professional antivirus product. You can find it here: free.grisoft.com It never asks for money, it never nags you to enter personal information, it doesn't pull bait-and-switch schemes or stop working after 60 days. AVG Free is a really excellent antivirus program that does an outstanding job of protecting your computer. I use it myself and I strongly recommend it.
