"I want to purchase a PC, what do you recommend?"

The price of PCs has fallen considerably, much like the cost of everything in the computer business. For most people, there is no need to spend more than $1000 to buy a good PC tower system with many attractive features. On most Sunday's, the ads in the Boston Globe from Best Buy, Circuit City and Staples typically feature very good PC "tower" computers priced between $250 to $550, the lowest prices usually being the "net" cost after rebates have been paid back to the purchaser.

In general I found have that Staples offers the least expensive computers, usually from Compaq. It is not uncommon to see a complete system sold for $299 after rebates. These PC systems typically include everything you need (the tower, the keyboard, the mouse, and an "old style" monitor). In some cases, Staples offers clearance items in individual stores as low as $200.

These are fine systems that should not be avoided. However I would be careful about purchasing eMachines computers because of quality issues. While eMachines has improved the quality of their machines, they historically suffered from cheap parts that did not stand up to regular use; power supplies frequently burned out long before they should have.

Look for a computer that has a processor running at 2.0 Ghz or higher, has 512MB of memory or higher, a DVD "burner" to record and play DVDs and CDs alike, and plenty of USB ports to connect printers, wireless mice, digital cameras and webcams, etc.
