2005 Philmont Crew 714-L2 On Trek 22


Crew 714-L2 will be led by Max Roemer taking Itinerary #22.  Adults will be Bob Roemer, Jim Harper and Axel Anderson.

July 12 and 13: we fly into Colorado Springs, and immediately take a cog railway trip up Pike's Peak. It may be freezing at the summit of 14,500 feet! The next day we go whitewater rafting on the Arkansas River, passing through the Royal Gorge. After lunch, then travel to La Junta, CO and visit Bent's old trading fort from the 1840s. Later in the afternoon, we visit the Koshare Indian Museum in La Junta, and see a performance of the Koshare Indian dancers. After the performance, we will sleep in the auditorium. The next morning, we are off to Philmont, about 3 hours away.

July 14 - Arrive at Philmont, get checked in, last minute outfitting, opening campfire that evening.

July 15 - Finish preparations, hit the trail, first night is VACA camp, your ranger trains you in the Philmont ways of camping.

July 16 - DEER LAKE CAMP on top of the mesa, pass through Harlan for 12 Gauge shotgun and burro racing

July 17 - UTE SPRINGS, pick up food at Ute Gulch; side hike to Aspen Springs camp (fantastic round boulders)

July 18 - LAMBERT MINE, mine tour;  panning for gold and blacksmithing at Cyphers Mine

July 19 - MT PHILLIPS, bring your rain coat and matches guys, one of the highest mountains in Philmont, 11700 feet

July 20 - PORCUPINE, stop at Clear Creek camp on the way for black powder shooting, and homesteading

July 21 - BEAUBIEN, western lore and trail rides; this is Mr. Durant’s favorite camp at Philmont by the way

July 22 - BEAUBIEN, side hike to Trail Peak mountain, chuck wagon dinner that evening

July 23 - ABREU, Mexican homestead, Cantina root beer, Mexican dinner that evening (yum!!)

July 24 - MINERS PARK, rock climbing, rappelling, climbing wall

July 25 - Hike back to Philmont headquarters and tent city by going over the Tooth of Time,  singing on the way in!! Closing campfire.

July 26 - Depart very early for Colorado Springs and our flight home
