The 2005 Trip - Our Itinerary
The Nashua Valley Council sent a contingent of 84 people to Philmont trip in 2005.
Bolton sent 2 crews of 10 people each: 714-L1 "super strenuous" 80 mike trek,
and 714-L2 "strenuous" 70 mile trek
WHEN: July 12-26, 2005
ITINERARY:
July 12 - Departed Logan at 6:55AM on AA
1261 for St. Louis, arrived St. Louis at 08:47AM, departed at 10:25AM on AA
5523,
arrived Colorado Springs at 11:40AM. (We traveled by bus on
Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma bus lines
for the next 3 days as we made our way to Philmont). From the airport, we
made our way over to the Pikes Peak cog railway train
for the 4:00PM trip up to the 14,110 foot summit of Pike's Peak Box lunches
were included. Afterwards we ate dinner at
Country Buffet in Colorado Springs. After dinner we traveled to Canon
City, CO and stayed at the
Holy Cross Abbey gymnasium.
July 13 - Breakfast at Holy Cross Abbey was followed by whitewater
rafting on the Arkansas River in the Royal Gorge, using
Echo Canyon
Outfitters. For lunch we traveled to Pueblo, CO to eat at
Country
Buffet. Then we traveled to La Junta, CO and visited Bent's Old Trading Fort,
followed by an early dinner at the Otero
Junior
College cafeteria in La Junta. We visited the
Koshare Indian museum at the
college, watched a performance of Indian dances and toured the museum. After
the show, we slept in the "kiva" (Indian lodge) where the dances were
performed.
July 14 - Ate breakfast at the Otero College cafeteria, and
then had a 3 hour bus ride across the plains, into New Mexico, and arrive at
Philmont by about
11:00AM. Lunch was our first meal at Philmont. We got our pictures
taken, did our medical
checkups, got our tent assignments for the evening. Dinner in the mess
hall, followed by a welcome campfire show.
July 15 - We got our equipment such as tents, cooking gear,
ropes, etc. and went through a final backpack check with our Ranger.
Before
lunch, we cleaned out our tents and packed our belongings into lockers. We
then depart the Philmont base camp on our 11 day trek
July 25 - We return from our treks, clean up, turn in our gear,
get our personal belongings from the lockers, and go to our tents to
prepare for the trip home. Dinner in the mess hall, followed by a final
evening campfire show.
July 26 - Buses arrive about 4:30AM, we depart Philmont at 5:00AM
for Colorado Springs. Depart Colorado Springs on AA 408 at 11:21AM for
Dallas,
depart Dallas on AA 2070 at 3:42PM, arrive Logan at 8:29PM.
