They lived parallel lives, stunning in similarity, yet never intersecting.
Jenny Birch and Susan Snow-Cotter both lived in Hingham. Each earned a master’s degree — Susan in marine affairs; Jenny in education. Both had young families — a husband and two children. And each shared a love for the water — Jenny through the Hingham Yacht Club and her husband’s marine services company; Susan through her directorship at the Massachusetts Office for Coastal Zone Management.
Jenny and Susan both died of breast cancer last December, within one week of each other.
They had so much in common. Yet they never met.
The 2009 3rd annual BC Regatta will be a celebration of their lives rather than a mourning of their deaths. And it will represent another beachhead in the battle against breast cancer. All proceeds from the event will be dedicated to fighting the disease that took the lives of two women in their prime.
The B/C Regatta will feature a children’s sailing event, where kids age 8 to 15 will haul around Hingham Harbor in a friendly competition.
The B/C Regatta is sponsored by Men With Heart, an all-volunteer organization dedicated to fighting breast cancer and getting more men involved in the cause.
“I can’t think of a better way to honor Jenny’s memory,” said her husband, Chris Birch. “Creating an event that combines her love for the water with her wish to eradicate breast cancer is exactly what she would have wanted.”
