On my 37th birthday, Dec. 5th 1980 we took on U.S.Electricar of Massachusetts, and their Lectric Leopard (Renault Le-Car) product, to a barrage of TV reporters, cameras, and news people. Lightning had struck. Steve Lough and Lough Motors would never be the same.
It may just be a coincidence, but on December 5th, of 1996, again
on
MY Birthday, General Motors inaugurated sale of its GM EV-1 in
California
and Arizona !
And THEN again, on December 5ath 2006.. GM made another EV anouncement !! ?Think the big guy upstairs is trying to Tell Me Something ??
Just one week behind the wheel of my demonstrator, and I knew that this was my destiny. Two years later, we built ION-1 and the media and the public went WILD. However, I found out loving the environmentalism of these cars, or coveting its beauty is one thing and shelling out your own $10,000 to $20,000 to own one, is quite another.
In early 81, I joined the local Seattle Electric Vehicle Association, and was soon made their new charismatic President, putting on long distance rallies, EV shows at the Pacific Science Center, and generally trying to wake up the people to smell the on coming world wide tidal wave of car exhaust. I made alliances between the S.E.V.A. and the Washington Environmental Council, tried to interest the Lung Association to back electric car issues, I testified before the Washington State Legislature. I now sit on the board of directors of the national Electric Auto Association, am a member of the Electric Vehicle Industry Association, and People for Puget Sound, the Puget Sound Economic Development Council, Al-Trans, a coalition of dozens of environmental and transportation alternative groups, and carry my message to schools, business groups or any one who will listen.
Over the last 21 years by virtue of the friends and colleges I have acquired in this field, I know that if we suddenly had an order from Boeing, City Light, or Microsoft, for One Hundred electric cars and trucks, that in less than 72 hours, I could have the talent and the person-power assembled to fill the order! The infrastructure is not the problem. Given the physical capabilities of TODAYs electric cars for speed and range, AND that half of everyone in our, or any urban county, drive less than 40 miles a day, the problem is not the performance of the cars either! They will go the distance, they will do the speed!
It is YOU, You the customer we must win over. The good earth needs your stewardship. People have a natural tendency to stay with what is familiar, even when it can be shown that it is bad for them. It is from lack of knowledge and fear of the unknown.. We must stop the DENIAL that putting billions of gallons of poison fuel into our cars, and seeing billions of pounds of air pollution go into our atmosphere is someone elses responsibility and problem. We have met the enemy and it US. Any two + car family, traveling 40 miles or less a day. The ball is in your court. Or should I say.... In your driveway ?
Now, after 20 years, my business is more information than production. To SELL ..ION-1 was my main reason for having this web site. Now that THAT is HISTORY, and without a product ....information remains my best contribution. Locally, my friends have all gone together to form a co-op EV business called Electric Vehicles Northwest, Inc. or "EVsNW" for short. If you are in the Pacific North West, you can reach them at # 206-547-4621, or E-Mail at : info@ebikesnw.com They also have a new Web Site at: http://www.ebikesnw.com They are very capable and have become LEADERS in selling and servicing Electric Assisted Bicycles.
