Phoenix Mustangs Boys Soccer Team Wins State!

At state game #1, the team faced Valley United and pulled off a 3-2 win with Joey Beaird scoring 3 times. Game 2 was against the St. Paul Blackhawk's and the Golden Valley Mustangs won 2-1 carried on the shoulders of a tenacious defense led by sweeper Ian

Lovitt and goalie Michael fields. Game 3 was against Champlain Dayton

and the Mustangs won 4-0 in a game played in a cold driving rain. Jeremy Hamel played at offensive midfield with an as-yet-undiagnosed broken arm. In spite of the fracture, the mud and the rain, he led his team to victory with 3 goals.

The championship game was against a tough, fast, high-scoring North Branch team. In a tooth & nail game, the Mustangs pulled off a 4-3 victory to take the state championship. Joey Beaird kept the team in the hunt with 2 goals early. Mateusz Fisher scored from right wing for the teams third goal. The winning goal came with twelve minutes left on a service from Joey Beaird at the flag to defensive midfielder Denis Beaird who one-timed it to the corner of the net. North Branch mounted a fierce attack, but, as they had all year stopper David Sotro, defenders Joey Bies, Taylor Luther, and Pete Coryell were up to the challenge and held on for the win.

The players are: Albi Beaird, Denis Beaird, Joey Beaird, Joey Bies, Chase Browdie, Peter Coryell, Michael Fields, Mateusz Fischer, Jeremy Hamel, Ian Lovitt, Taylor Luther, Sterling Nelson, Ian Norman, Nicholas Ore, Gordy Scholl, David Sotro, Max Stelzner & Donald Stephens.
