Purpose

The Alliance for AC Transit, also known as the Bus Riders Union is a public transit advocacy organization based in the East Bay. We are not connected with AC Transit, other than that we ride their buses. Members of the Alliance/BRU are people in all walks of life, including professionals, wage workers, retired people and bus drivers.

The Bay Area Bus Riders Union got started after the 1996 cutbacks in AC Transit service.

The Alliance/BRU has about 400 members on a mailing list, and about 8 people who attend meetings.

The Bus Riders Union started out as a separate group, operating as a committee of the Alliance. Later on, the two memberships were merged into one "Alliance/BRU".

The main purpose of the Alliance/BRU is to work for more funding for AC Transit so there can be more bus service.

Things we've done:

The Alliance/BRU is an organization member of BATLUC -- Bay Area Transportation and Land Use Coalition. We support BATLUC's work toward "smart growth", affordable (transit-oriented) housing and social justice.

Meeting Place

The Alliance/BRU meets on the 2nd and last Thursday of each month.

We meet at Redwood Gardens, at 2951 Derby Street in Berkeley. This is accessible by bus line #7 which runs every half hour.

Meetings begin at 6:30pm. Directions to the meeting room are posted on the entrance door of the building (just back from the bus shelter).

The next meeting is the big General Annual Meeting, on March 28, 2002.

Membership and Dues

Yearly dues are $5 (or whatever is affordable). Because of our political activities, donations are not tax deductible.
