T3 Test

1)     How does the = technique=20 for clearing non flyable configurations differ from solo to = tandem.=20 (Non Flying Config.=3D delfations, stalls, spins, sticks, tangles = etc.)

The greatest differences are; =

weight = shift
wing = loading

Maneuvers

= =
Asymmetric recovery; = expect a=20 dramatic turn. Don=92t over brake the flying side, but be = aware that=20 steering the open side can be = difficult
Full Frontal; expect = the=20 glider to drop behind, expect to swing underneath quickly, = expect=20 quick re-inflation and recognize potential for=20 = surge.
Stall; less likely, = because of=20 high brake pressure, more likely because of high wing = loading.=20 Normal = recovery.
Spin; less likely = because of=20 high wings loading and high brake pressure. More likely = because of=20 less weight = shift.

Tangles or Sticks =

=
High wing loading = equals=20 dramatic turn with inability to correct with weight = shift.
Sticks, tangles, = etc. cannot=20 be troubleshot because of the pilots inability to reach the = lines=20 = involved.

2) Launch Abort Procedures =

= =
Strong Wind; = Generally not=20 pretty. B=92s easy to pull, don=92t really disable the = glider=20 completely. C=92s will set it down with few neg. effect. . = D=92s brakes=20 pull you up and back. Brakes take you for a=20 = ride.
Steep Launch(light = wind) Tell=20 passenger STOP. B=92s and C=92s don=92t provide enough = resistance to stop=20 downhill momentum,  = D=92s=20 decelerate and stop pilot and passenger. Brakes are viable = option,=20 especially at the last minute, but might not be enough to = stop=20 without taking = wraps.
Passenger stops = running; keep=20 going when possible. Apply brake and help passenger up when=20 possible. Use D=92s or brake to slow down and=20 = abort.

3) High Wing Loading=20

= <= /TBODY>
All speeds are = high
Generally, = theoretically,=20 gliders are more impervious to = deflation.
More dramatic = deflations with=20 more dynamic recoveries(depending on passenger=20 = size).
Theoretically, more = dynamic in=20 terms of pitch and=20 roll.

  =

4)     = Tandem=20 Rigging Systems =

Pilot in back; = passenger=20 visibility is better and running is easier. Passenger = can=92t grab=20 risers. Pilot has the ability to watch and manipulate the = passenger.=20 Pilot surfs passenger on bad = landing.Side by side. Easier = for pilot=20 and passenger to run. Less likelihood of surfing on launch = or=20 landing. Better visibility. No weight shift. Asymmetric = brakes.

5)     = T=20 1

=B7       =20 License to learn and improve while flying with other = rated=20 pilots.

6)    =20 Current Federal Laws and Exemptions related to Tandem.

=B7      =20 FAR 103 says "no two place ultralight flight" = Exepmtion 4721=20 says that for inst. purposes and if the passenger know the = aircraft isn't=20 certified by the FAA, then it's o.k. as long as the pilot and = student have=20 the proper paperwork. USHGA Card for Pilot and Passenger, = Exemption 4721=20 on board and required equipment.

7)    =20 Equipment

=B7       =20 Required; Helmets, Harnesses, Rated Glider and = Reserve and=20 Hook Knife

=B7       =20 Recommended; Ankle Supporting Boots, Knee Pads, = Gloves and=20 Appropriate Clothing.

8)     = Two=20 things to tell student by law;

=B7       =20 Flight is Instructional

=B7       =20 Glider Isn=92t Certified by the FAA and they give us = an=20 exemption that allows two place ultra light flight

9)     = What=20 six subjects must you discuss before flying?

=B7       =20 Have you seen a paraglider fly?

=B7       =20 Do you understand that Paragliders are controlled by = leaning=20 and with the use of the hands?

=B7       =20 Do you understand that we have to run to take = off?

=B7       =20 Are you willing to do what I ask of you in order to = fly?

=B7       =20 You know we fly with a reserve parachute big enough = for both=20 of us?

=B7       =20 You know the FAA doesn=92t certify Paragliders?

=B7       =20 Our insurance policy is 3rd. party.

10) Why should tandem = pilots=20 maintain their equipment?

=B7       =20 To insure safety

Why should = pilots document=20 repairs and maintenance?

=B7       =20 In order to insure that you are beyond reproach = should you=20 they be involved in a legal matter.

11) Who is legally = responsible for=20 the students welfare?

=B7       =20 The pilot.

12)Name four = things that a=20 student could do that might cause a problem on launch.

=B7       =20 Grab risers

=B7       =20 Knock the pilot in the head with his/ her helmet = while=20 looking up

=B7       =20 Stop running

=B7       =20 Run to the side

=B7       =20 Run too hard.

13) What problem may a = student who=20 is shorter or taller than yourself present on launch.

=B7       =20 Too tall a passenger means; the pilot will become airborne = first=20 and might not be able to help run during the transition into = flight.

=B7     =20 Too short a passenger means;that the passenger will become = airborne=20 first and the pilot will have to run the glider to speed my = his/her=20 self.

14) What problem may a = student who=20 is shorter or taller than yourself =20 present on landing.

=B7       =20 Too tall a passenger means; the passenger will touch = down=20 first, the pilot will have to flare for the passenger.

=B7      =20 Too short a passenger means; the pilot may have to touch = down first=20 and continue running while supporting the passengers weight until = he/she=20 touches down.

15) How are these = different while=20 tandem when compared to solo.

=B7       =20 Roll rate; quicker

=B7       =20 Turning radius; greater(high brake pressure)

=B7       =20 Stall Speed; higher

=B7       =20 Altitude loss during stall recovery; stupid.

=B7       =20 Best glide; n/a.

=B7       =20 High end speed; higher.

16) Why is experience in = turbulence a prerequisite for tandem flying even though the tandem = flight=20 may be conducted in smooth conditions?

=B7       =20 The T3 rating is the highest available in USHGA. = Those who=20 have the T3, should have already acquired that experience and the = special=20 skill even though they will likely never fly tandem in excessive=20 turbulence.

17) Four ways to reduce=20 airsickness.

=B7       =20 Drugs

=B7       =20 Smooth Turns

=B7       =20 Nice Conditions

=B7       =20 Talking(i.e. participation)

=B7       =20 Look at the horizon, cross legs at the ankles.

18) What size reserve is = required=20 by USHGA for tandem instruction?

=B7       =20 A reserve big enough for the payload.

19) What are the effects = high=20 altitude, high temperature, and high humidity on  tandem launches and = landings.

=B7       =20 All of the above increase the speeds.

20) What two things = should a=20 beginner tandem student concentrate on during a tandem launch?

=B7       =20 Look at the horizon

=B7       =20 Move with the pilot

21) Three reasons S turn = approach=20 potentially more dangerous while tandem flying than an aircraft = style=20 approach?

=B7       =20 Risk of pendulum near the ground

=B7       =20 Risk of overshooting due to large turn radius

=B7       =20 Potential lack of time spent on long straight = final

22) Five characteristics = of a good=20 tandem paraglider?

Pilot in front; = pilot has=20 better visibility, pilot can run more easily, pilot can = lead,=20 passenger can see what the pilot is doing and has something = to push=20 on. Passenger can grab risers. Passenger surfs pilot on bad = landing.
= Resistant to = deflation <= /TBODY>
Easy=20 = launch
Easy=20 = landing
Certified
Consistent = throughout the=20 weight = range

23) Exemption expires on = Halloween.

24) What effect could a = tandem=20 injury or fatality have on the future of tandem = instruction?

The exemption might = not be=20 renewed. Hang Gliding and Paragliding might come to be = regulated by=20 the = FAA.

25) How does high wing = loading=20 effect flare timing?

It makes it more = difficult.=20 The window for flare timing is = narrower.
