A. =20 How=92s it going today? =20 There are a few things to know about participating in an=20 instructional tandem paragliding flight.

1. The = purpose of=20 our flight is instruction. = What is the purpose of our flight?

2. =20 There=92s not much you need to do as a student, other than = relax and=20 enjoy yourself.

3. It=92s = a really fun=20 thing to do...

4. Is = there anything=20 that would prevent you from taking our flight today?

B. =20 Just to give you an idea of what is going to happen today, = let me=20 give you a brief overview:

1. =20 There is some paperwork to take care of and you also need = to pay=20 me.

2. =20 Once we are finished with that, we=92ll get some gear on = and do a=20 short simulation on launching and how to get comfortable in your = harness=20 once we are in the air.

3. I=92ll = coach you on=20 what to do in the air and on landing when we come to them, Ok?

II. =20 Verbal Briefing and Paperwork

=20

A. Verbal=20 Briefing

We are able to fly tandem today under = FAA=20 exemption #4721 to FAR part 103, which allows for instructional = tandem=20 flying with ultralight aircraft. =20 I am also required to tell you that our tandem paraglider = does not=20 meet aircraft certification standards as set forth by the = FAA. No ultralight aircraft = meets those=20 standards. Our = glider,=20 however, is certified by a different agency. If I weren=92t = comfortable with=20 it I wouldn=92t be = flying=20 it.

1. We have = to run to=20 get into the air.

2. The = glider is=20 controlled by weight shift and brake line thingys. To turn right, we shift = our weight=20 to the right and I pull the right thingy, to turn left, we do just = the=20 opposite. It=92s = pretty simple,=20 I will control it, please don=92t touch nuthin=92.

3. We have = to run=20 together to get into the air.

4. You = have to=20 listen to my instructions and be able to carry them out.

5. We have = a reserve=20 parachute designed for two people, in the unlikely event we need = it,=20 I will deploy it.

6. Our = certifying=20 organization=92s (USHGA) insurance is third party liability = only. It doesn=92t cover = you=97it doesn=92t=20 cover me.

III. =20 Gearing up & Briefing

A. =20 Student

1. =20 Helmet on & fastened

2. =20 Harness on-- 1,2,3 buckles secure.

B. =20 Pilot

1. =20 Reserve pin check.

2. =20 Helmet on & fastened.

3. =20 Harness on-- 1,2,3 buckles secure.

C. =20 Launch Simulation

1. =20 Hook pilot & student together

2. =20 Demonstrate Launching

a. Look at = that=20 point on the horizon

b. Bend = your knees;=20 sink low in the harness

c. When = the glider=20 comes up, you will feel a tug on &nbs= p; = ; = &= nbsp; &n= bsp; &nb= sp; &nbs= p; =20 your=20 harness=97just keep sinking in the harness &nbs= p; = ; = &= nbsp; &n= bsp; &nb= sp; &nbs= p;=20 and resist=20 the pull. Be ready = to step=20 forward and &nbs= p; = ; = &= nbsp; &n= bsp; &nb= sp; =20 then back a=20 couple of steps, and then move &nbs= p; = ; = &= nbsp; &n= bsp; &nb= sp; &nbs= p; =20 forward=20 again.

d. Keep = running=20 until I say stop running.

e. Once we = are in=20 the air, I will tell you to get into your harness. You do that by looking = over your=20 right shoulder, bringing your arm through here and sliding your = thumb down=20 the harness to this strap here. =20 Do the same on the other side. Now push with your = thumbs and=20 bring your knees up to = your=20 chest.

f. = Any=20 questions?

g. Unhook=20 passenger.

IV. =20 Glider Layout & Launch

=20

A. =20 Get glider and move with passenger to launch, check = conditions.

1. =20 Unfold & Layout glider

2. =20 Clear lines.

3. =20 If there is wind, fluff and weathervane the glider into the = wind,=20 checking for snags, tangles, lineovers, or sticks. Otherwise, lay = out for no=20 wind launch.

B. =20 Final Preflight

1. =20 Student

a. = Helmet on=20 & fastened.

b. = Harness on--=20 1,2,3 buckles secure.

2. = Pilot

a. = Helmet on=20 & fastened.

b. = Harness on --=20 1,2,3 buckles secure.

3. =20 Spreader Bars and Trimmers

a. = Holding the=20 risers, clip pilot & student together while maintaining slight = pressure in=20 the glider.

b. = Right=20 side:

1. =20 Student hooked in & locked.

2. =20 Pilot hooked in & locked.

c.     = Left=20 side:

1.       =20 Student hooked in & locked.

2.       =20 Pilot hooked in & locked.

d.    =20 Trimmers:

1. =20 Correct position.

C. &nbs= p; =20 Launch=97check conditions again.

1.       =20 Hook into glider, 2 carabiners hooked in & = locked.

2.     = Ask student=20 : =93Are you ready?=94

3.     = Ok, on=20 three, 1..2..3...

4.     = Get glider=20 overhead in control.

5.       =20 Visually check glider and lines.

6.       =20 Launch, telling student to run. Kick & bump = student if=20 necessary.

V. =20 Flight

=20

A. =20 Once flying and clear of terrain, get student into seat = using method described in=20 simulation. Get = into your=20 harness.

B. =20 Talk to student continuously if needed.

C. =20 Fly like a PRO. =20 Remember, they are precious cargo and deserve your absolute = best=20 efforts.

VI. =20 Landing

A. =20 Get student out of harness early (200=92 agl minimum) = and ready to run.

B. =20 Check the wind

C. =20 Once on long final into wind, get off brakes, take wrap if=20 necessary, visually check for no trailing edge deflection.

D. =20 Begin bottom turn about 8=92 agl (depending on glider = type), feel the=20 glider for flare timing and then use full arm extension for flare.

E. Hold = flare, run=20 if needed, turn student and move toward glider and set it = down.

F. Unclip = from the=20 glider immediately.

G. =20 Unclip from student and let them take pictures while still = in the=20 gear & stuff. =20 Congratulate them on what a great job they did.
