Listed below is a summary of the major canine diseases and contain a
general overview to give pet owners an idea of what these disease are and
what symptoms to be on the look out for in their dogs. They are in no way
complete to cover all aspects of the illnesses. For more extended

Canine Distemper
Is an incurable and often fatal viral disease. It is highly
contagious Young dogs are the most susceptible to this disease with a high
mortality rate.
Symptoms
The first noticeable symptoms of canine distemper are eye discharge,
squinting, coughing, nasal discharge, weight loss, vomiting and diarrhea.
Heartworm
Heartworm is transmitted via mosquito bite. Heartworms are a
parasite that lives in the blood an heart chamber of the infected animal.
Heartworms are very dangerous and can cause the heart to enlarge, and
causes stress to internal organs by resisting the animals blood flow. It
can be fatal if left untreated.
Symptoms
Breathing difficulty, cough, weight loss, fatigue, rough coat.
Infectious Canine Hepatitis
Is a disease that affects dogs the liver and other organs. The
mortality rate is highest among very young dogs.
Symptoms
Sore throat, cough, fever, loss of appetite,
Leptospirosis
This is a contagious disease that affect both dogs and humans,
and may result in chronic liver and kidney failure in dogs.
Symptoms
Sudden fever, shivering, lack of appetite, vomiting, dark urine.
Canine Parvovirus Infection
Parvovirus is one of the most common virus affecting dogs, it
occurs more frequently in puppies than older dogs. This virus attack the
dogs digestive track and can attack the heart in young puppies.
Symptoms
Diarrhea, often bloody. Fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, vomiting,
fever.
Other Canine Diseases and Illnesses
Kennel Cough
Dry hacking cough that can sometimes lead to retching.
Conjunctivitis, runny nose, sneezing.
In more severe cases, fever, lethargy, depression, breathing difficulties.
Allergies
Dogs can suffer from different forms of allergies: inhalant, skin,
flea, food and contact allergies.
Inhalant: Like humans dogs can suffer from seasonal and
indoor allergies. Symptoms include itchy skin and the dog will often
scratch or bite at his body and paws.
Flea: Flea allergy is common in dogs and cats. It is not the flea
itself your pet is allergic to but rather the flea's saliva and can cause
intense itching that results in the dog sometimes itching themselves raw.
Food: Dogs are often allergic to
beef, chicken, corn, pork, fish, milk, wheat, whey, eggs,
preservatives and soy. Food
allergies can often be overlooked as the dog can suddenly become allergic
to foods he has been eating all of his life.
Arthritis
Slowness in movement, showing pain with movement, limping.
Arthritis can affect many areas in your dog's body, watch for warning
signs in these areas: hips, shoulders, elbows, knees, wrists. Diabetes
Increased thirst, increased urination, lethargy, weakness, weight
loss, increase in chronic infections.
