BRAD'S COMMENTS:
At the time the TNG Officers Manual was written, the exact size of the
warbird must have not hit home with the FASA writers. The stats for the A and B
types indicate a ship roughly equal to the
Galaxy
class. But even in ST:TNG First Season we get glamour shots of
the D'daridex positioned in the distance, with the NCC-1701-D in the foreground,
and the D'daridex obviously dwarfs the Galaxy class. Given the ship's
apparent size, and its proposed quantum black hole power source, I think it's
safe to say the stats originally provided by FASA are totally off the
mark. I have therefore included three new types of my own devising which
make the warbird more formidable. It is after all the most advanced
Romulan design of the ST:TNG era, it ought to kick butt.
The D'daridex has got to be one of
the most gorgeous ship designs to emerge from the ST:TNG series. At least
as elegant and organic looking as the Galaxy class, and far cooler looking than
the old teardrop shaped Bird of Prey ship from ST:TOS. Sadly, this is
about the only Romulan ship we ever see in ST:TNG or DS9. The entire Romulan
fleet seems to be composed of nothing but D'daridex class ships! Which is
one hell of a navy! But I have to think there should be more ships of
different classes, the TNG guys just never got a chance to fill in the blanks.
The upcoming Star Trek movie is going to be the first of any Star
Trek movie to focus on the Romulan Star Empire. We'll see if they don't
show some different Romulan classes when Picard squares off with his 'evil twin'
in ST:NEMESIS.
I have not tried this scenario, but it
would be interesting to set up a Type C or Type D warbird against the new
Sovereign class, and see which class comes out on top. Both ships are
fairly well matched, and ought to be able to compete. The warbird has more
superstructure, but like most Federation craft the Sovereign class has more
power. Try it if you want, and let me know the results!
