Here I am posing with Tundra. Shortly after Louise shot
this, Tundra stuck a big wet tongue in my ear. He's mellowed over the years and is now just a big, sweet, old dog who loves when you take a walk on the beach with him.

Our first morning we met Dave, a Cisco a software engineer who works from his beach home. Dave stopped by Liz's to pick up the monk seal sign. We walked down the beach with him to see the Hawaiin Monk Seal who had come ashore. Monk Seals are endangered and estimates are that only about 30 still live around Kaua'i.

Warning sign that people place around Monk Seals who have beached in the area. The seal returned to the ocean about an hour later.

Dave invited to his house for a glass of water. He lives just past where a creek divides Aliomanu Road. There was once a little bridge over the creek but it washed out when Hurrican Iniki hit the island and was never restored. This is a view of the end of the beach from Dave's house. |

I've shot views of
Kalalea Mountain, known to us haoles as King Kong, before. Apparently scenes from the original movie were shot here and there is a part of the mountain that resembles a gorilla's face.

We took a hike -- more of a mile walk up an unimproved road -- near the arboretum. We've walked here before. During the springtime, the hibiscus trees are in bloom and beautiful red flowers abound. Here is a view showing this plush, tropical forest with a mountain, of course, framing the view. |
