DAY 2: Changing of the Guard, Tower of London

Riding the Tour Bus

Richard & Emily riding
a Tourist Bus

Friday we got up and went to find out when the changing of the Guard would take place. It was this day, so we decided to take one of the hop on/off double-decker bus tours for the morning to see London. We jumped off the bus in time to catch a tube train back to Buckingham Palace. We got there just in time to see the Changing of the Guard. This old-timer came up to us and gave us a little talk about the Guard and London's History.

For lunch, we ate lunch at the Sherlock Holmes Pub near Charing Cross and had London's famous fish and chips. Never realized what all the fuss was about. I will never look at fish sticks the same ever again! From there we went over to the Tower of London via the tube.

We took a Beefeater lead tour through the tower complex. It was informative as well as entertaining. I would highly recommend visitors to take this tour. Of course the tour only cover a small portion of this complex. We were intrigued with the fact that the moat around the tower was filled with filth for over 500 years until Queen Victoria decreed to drain the stench. We did some walking around the complex, saw the crown jewels, but feet were starting to hurt. We walked around the outside of the tower by Tower Bridge.

We jumped on the Tour bus and went around London for a while. Our feet needed the rest. A couple of us even fell asleep. For dinner we went to Oxford Circus and ate at YO! SUSHI. You guessed it, a sushi restaurant. It was a bright and modern conveyor belt sushi place. The drinks were delivered via a robot trolley that circled the place. The sushi and deserts were great, the price was a bit steep compared to our favorite place in Beaverton, Oregon, but it was fun. We then called it a night, taking the tube back to the hotel.
