This online career resource is published by the Wall Street Journal. In addition to a wealth of articles on subjects like negotiating tips, job-hunting advice, and managing your career, the site provides a salary comparison tool. You can also get regional career news and a listing of career events being held in your area.

The publication also provides updates of requirements for certification programs.

Contract Professional Magazine

This publication is now called The Talent Economy, but the old Contract Professional articles are still available online. Where The Talent Economy focuses more on agencies and human resource professionals that hire IT professionals, Contract Professional was slanted toward the technical consultant. The online CP includes articles specific to contracting and independent consulting on subjects such as setting rates, contracts, and agencies. Each issue contained an article spotlighting consulting in a particular region of the country.

This website maintained by the publishers of Creative Business newsletter, books, and publications. Published ten times a year, Creative Business newsletter is devoted to the business side of creative services (graphic design, interactive, advertising, editorial, and marketing). The information for the newsletter comes from the actual experiences of thousands of creative business owners and freelancers. You can choose from a print subscription ($139) or an electronic subscription ($119) sent via e-mail in Acrobat PDF format. On their website, you can download articles, view their links and resources, subscribe to their newsletter, or view a sample of their newsletter in PDF format.

One of the useful features of this site is the News To Peruse page. Updated weekly, it includes job market news from all 50 states, as well as information from around the world. Of particular interest on this page is a table with National Unemployment statistics for all 50 states. You can compare the unemployment numbers of your state with other states.

This is another informative business site maintained by the Wall Street Journal. This site contains a wealth of information on starting a business. The site includes great articles on franchising, financing, technology, and running a business. Don’t have a business? Buy one. You can search their large database of businesses for sale or you can browse their franchise area to see if franchising is right for you. They also provide two really great tools. One tool helps you to create a business plan right on their site. The other provides a free trademark search tool so you can see if the business or services name you are considering has been previously trademarked.

Working Solo
