Periodic Table

As scientists began experimenting with the various types of elements that exist, they decided that they needed a way to organize them. What developed was a classification chart called the Periodic Table of Elements. Each element is placed in order based on its number of protons and electrons and on its properties.

In other words, if an element has 2 protons and 2 electrons, such as helium, it would be number 2 on the chart. And since helium is a gas, it would be located in the section of the table that deals with gases.
