Moneras

To be classified as a monera, an organism must be only one cell in size and contain no nucleus. Examples of a monera would be the different types of bacteria.

Everywhere around us are billions of billions of bacteria. Since they are so small, though, we can not see them. Bacteria can only be seen under a microscope.

Bacteria can be useful to man. Bacteria help process foods such as yogurt and cheese. Bacteria is also put to use in manufacturing medicines, cleaners, adhesives, and other products. Special bacteria that digest oil are used to clean up oil spills in oceans around the world.

Bacteria can be harmful, though too, and cause dangerous infections and diseases.

Bacteria can come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Below are the three basic shapes of bacteria.

Bacteria can also form long, thin chains of small stacks of cells that resemble coins that have been placed one on top of the other.
