Protists

Like a monera, a protist has only one cell. Unlike a monera, however, it possesses a nucleus. Examples of protists are algae, amoebas, and paramecium.

                                                               entamoeba histolyica

Protists live in moist areas, such as fresh and salt water, damp soil, rotting logs, or the bodies of other organisms. These single-celled organisms can move by swishing long tails or moving hundreds of tiny legs.

Some protists can make their own food. They contain chlorophyll, like plants, and can manufacture food from the sun's energy.

plasmodium falciparum

Other protists, though, must catch their own meals. To eat, these microscopic organisms change their shape so that they completely encircle food particles. They then slowly digest the food and excrete the waste products.
