Science of Weather

METEOROLOGY is the study of weather, climate, and the earth's atmosphere. METEOROLOGISTS are scientists who study and forecast weather.

Meteorologists use various instruments to measure and obtain the information they need. They include the following:

THERMOMETER: to measure the temperature of the air

BAROMETER: to measure air pressure

HYGROMETER: to measure humidity (moisture in air)

RAIN or SNOW GAUGES: to measure the amount of precipitation

ANEMOMETER: to measure wind speed

WEATHER VANE: to measure wind direction

Meteorologists also use radiosonde, which is a signaling device sent into the air in a weather balloon, as well as radar and weather satellites in space.

After all the weather information is gathered and studied, computers print out weather maps that show existing weather conditions and predicted changes. This information is forwarded to local newspaper, radio and news stations.
