Training Tips

OUCH, MY PUPPY IS TEETHING!!!!!!!

Offer your puppy a toy, squeaky toys are especially enticing, or an easily digestible chew toy (make sure it’s the right size for your puppy) if he starts to munch on your fingers (or other body parts).

Kongs are hollow rubber cones you can stuff with food (peanut butter, kibble, cheese, honey) and will keep your puppy or dog busy because they have to work at getting the food. Just remember, this is not an addition to your puppy/dogs regular diet. The Kongs can be filled with your pups regular meal plus the peanut butter or cheese, whatever will keep the food in there and get your furry friend to really work at getting out the food. We don’t want any overweight pups.

PUPPY PAD TRAINING

Puppy pads have a special scent that attracts dogs to them. Place pads in the bathroom or kitchen (not on a carpet/rug, PLEASE) and bring your puppy to the pad after every feeding or drink of water. This will help the puppy associate eliminating with the pad.

If your pooch eliminates on the pad, PRAISE LIKE CRAZY!!!!!!! This will teach your pup that going on the pads is a great thing.
You can even give a little treat when they’re done, thus reinforcing their good behavior.

HYPER PUPPY/DOG???

If your dog is on turbo charge, ask yourself the following:

Is he/she getting enough exercise?
Are you interacting enough (socializing) with your pooch?
Does your pooch get along with other dogs? If the answer is yes, take Fido to the dog run or better yet, an obedience class. This will mentally stimulate your dog and is just as important as physical exercise.

No time during the day? Hire a doggie exerciser (walker) who will run with your dog (make sure your dog is not overexerted) or play a rousing game of fetch at the dog run.
