Third Generation
13. John Jacob
Burket (Burgert) was born on 11 Apr 1789 in Berlin, Bedford, Pennsylvania.38 Jacob and Elisabeth Burket are
witnesses. He goes by Jacob. Chris has a younger son John....so this one would
be Jacob on the records. He was christened on 3 May 1789 in Berlin, Bedford,
Pennsylvania.38 He appeared
on the census in Quemahoning Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania on 24 Nov 180869,70
This is a deed in Quemahoning Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania, from Christopher
Burket to James Ross (his father in law) on 3 October 1789 (still Bedford County
at the time) for 150 acres of land next to Benjamin Kopp. James Black and Michael
Ross are witnesses; Michael being a brother to Christopher's wife Mary Ann.
A second paragraph in the deed shows James Ross assigning the land 3 March 1792
to his grandson Jacob Burket.
Then at the bottom there is a date of 24 November 1808. Jacob was only 2 years
old when his grandfather gave him the land, but it apparently wasn't legal until
he was at least 18 and the note was added to the original deed.
So, any land or census records we find for a later Jacob Burket (check 1850)
in Quemahoning would be THIS Jacob Burket!!!!!! I think I have seen a later
Jacob.
I took the following off of a web site about David Burket who moved to texas
and was a descendant of the 'other' burkets:
http://www.tamu.edu/ccbn/dewitt/davidburket.htm
Catherine McClure (1776-1833) married John William Burket (1774-1833) on 3 June
1794 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. The wedding occurred at the home of John
William Burket's brother George Burket, an innkeeper in Bedford County. It was
performed by the Rev. David McClure (1748-1820), Scotch Presbyterian itinerant
minister who described his experiences while wandering in a published journal
in 1772 (Diary of David McClure, Doctor of Divinity, 1748-1820). The relationship,
if any, between Catherine McClure and David McClure is unknown. John William
Burket was born 12 Jan 1774 in LancasterCo, PA while Catherine McClure was born
in BedfordCo, PA. They are thought to have had children John, Abraham, Absalom,
Jacob, Elizabeth, Polly, David Burket and Phoebe Burket. David Burket was born
22 Feb 1798 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania.
In 1805, the 200 acre tract on Stony Creek in Quemahoning Township, Bedford
County was surveyed 1 Sep 1795 by John Wells, Esq. and the survey filed in the
offices of John McClean, Deputy related to property warranted to John Burket
on 15 Aug 1793. As certified on 29 Jun 1805, the land was sold to Abraham Rhodes
(kin of John's mother, Barbara Fisher Burket).
What in the heck!! Check this out...........
He appeared in the census in 1820 in Quemahoning Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania.71 Age 26-45 with 3 sons under 10
and one daughter under 10. Wife 26-45 also. This is definitely our Jacob.
Solomon, Samuel and Jacob were the boys, and Elisabeth was the girl. He appeared
in the census in 1830 in Quemahoning Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania.
This is my Jacob..... since he is not in shade with the rest of the family and
he DID get land from his Grandfather Ross in Quemahoning.
01200001- which means 50-60 111001 which means wife 40-50. Spelled Bergerd on
the index. He is on page 97 He was taxed in 1836 in Quemahoning Township, Somerset,
Pennsylvania with son Samuel, still single. He appeared in the census
in 1840 in Quemahoning Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania. Page 97.
Listed in the index as Bucket. He was taxed in 1843 in Quemahoning Township,
Somerset, Pennsylvania 10 Acres. One horse, one cow, one house,
one lot. He was taxed in 1844 in Quemahoning Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania
Laborer, one cow, one house and listed with Christopher, his father. He appeared
in the census in 1850 in Quemahoning Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania.72 Jacob is living on land deeded
to him by his grandfather, James Ross when he was but 2 years old that came to
him when he was of age. This information is on an earlier deed from Christopher
his father to James, Christopher's father-in-law. Interesting.
On the 1850, Jacob is 70 years old and living next to some Kimmels: A Mary, 23,
a James 25 and wife Jane 21, and a Jacob 66........a Blacksmith born 1784 and
wife Elisabeth age 60. Interesting. Could he have married a Kimmel?
Jacob Burket and wife Margaret Kimmel??? Actually, he may have had a first wife
Magdalena as there is a Jacob and Magdalena who had a child on the Stoyestown
records and Maria Burket is the witness. Either that or it is a Magdalena Margaretha.
On 1850 in Quemahoning living next door to Jacob Kimmel and wife Elisabeth,
66 and 60 respectively. Jacob Kimmel is Blacksmith. Would have been born 1784.
Our Jacob is a Laborer. John Jacob Burket (Burgert) and Margaret were married.73 on 1850 census This must be
a second marriage as the Mt. Tabor Church records list Jacob and Magdalena as
do other records. Margaret was born in 1786 of Quemahoning,
Somerset, Pennsylvania.74
She appeared in the census in 1850 in Quemahoning Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania.
Age 64 and married to Jacob, a Laborer age 70 with 100 acres. Don't know if
this Jacob and Margaret are mine. Ages a bit off, as this Jacob was born, supposedly
1780. That is 6 years off. Is it possilble Margaret is the anglicized version
of Magdalena? Maybe. John Jacob Burket (Burgert) and Magdalena were married.40 A Jacob and Magdalena have a
child christened on the Stoyestown records and Maria Burket is witness. Maria
is also the witness to the birth of Israel Burket, son of Israel and grandson
of Christopher Burket John Jacob Burket (Burgert) and
Magdalena had the following children:
46 | i. | Solomon Burket was born in 1808 in Berlin,
Somerset, Pennsylvania. He appeared in the census in 1870 in Allegheny,
Somerset, Pennsylvania. Age 61 on the 1870 in Allegheny which totally
matches the church records in Allegheny. For what it is worth. This could help
verify that our Solomon was in allegheny with Christian, his uncle. He is living
with Susan Saylor and her children (possible daughter in law). She is age 45
and there are children, Andrew, Peter and Samuel.
WAIT. Living next door to Israel and Josiah the twins who are supposedly the
grandchildren of the OTHER Jacob from Allegheny. Who KNOWS. Check Berlin Records
for this info. Father Jacob. Does it list mother? | 47 | ii. | Elisabeth Burket (Burkhart) was born
on 1 Dec 1813 in Mt. Tabor Reformed Church, Stoystown, Somerset, Pennsylvania.39 I used to think all of these
children went with the Jacob born 1758 and living in Allegheny. But after I
found out about Jacob receiving land given to him by his grandfather Ross, I
realised these are probably his children as he was living in the area and went
by the name Jacob as opposed to John.
I am still of the mind that Jacob 1758 and wife elisabeth were the Jacob and
Elisabeth who witnessed the birth of this very John Jacob in 1789. Isn't it
ironic. Sure wish I knew why. How they were related.
She appeared in the census in 1830 in Shade Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania.
Jonathan Sorber 20-30 and Elisabeth 15-20.
It is possible that Elisabeth, grandaughter of Christopher Burket, married Jonathan
Sorber and that they are on the census with the entire family! Lots of family!
Burkets like crazy, and Michael Smitely who married Christopher's youngest daughter.
Jonathan Sorber is RIGHT NEXT DOOR to John Burket. | 48 | iii. | Samuel Burket (Burgert)76 was born on 30 Jun 1816 in Stoyestown, Somerset, Pennsylvania.40 Maria Burgert is witness. He
was taxed in 1836/37 in Quemahoning Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania; single
This fits. Single, would be only 20 years old. Living in Quemahoning.....and
we know John Jacob was here, living on property from his grandpa Ross. So, the
early children of Jacob and Magdalena are on the Stoystown records and the later
on the Mt. Tabor church records which is also in Stoystown. | 49 | iv. | Jacob Burket (Burghard)
was born on 17 Jun 1818 in Mt. Tabor Reformed Church, Stoystown, Somerset, Pennsylvania.39 He was christened on 17 Dec 1818
in Mt. Tabor Reformed Church, Stoystown, Somerset, Pennsylvania.39 Does this Jacob belong? No mention of Magdalena, but
year is right for fitting in with other siblings. Barbara Gonda is witness.
Who is she? | 50 | v. | Maria
Magdalena Burket (Burghard) was born on 10 Nov 1830 in Mt. Tabor Reformed
Church, Stoystown, Somerset, Pennsylvania.39
She was christened on 21 Nov 1830 in Mt. Tabor Reformed Church, Stoystown, Somerset,
Pennsylvania.39 Spelled
Burghard on the church records. This is the same church where Michael and wife
had kids, and grandma Mary Ann Ross Burket is the witness to Michael's kids. |
