Third Generation16. By 1800 his father has 4 boys under 10 and one 10-15. Must wait for my tax records to come in...then I can figure this all out. Looks like he is on the 1810 census in Greenfield as 16-25 means born about 1785-1790 so that fits with above. We'll say 1785.
John Jacob shows up on the tax lists in Greenfield on the Married lists the same time he shows up on the census...1810. Not on single freeman lists for 1809 so I am thinking he marries right at 21. This would mean he is born 1789 which fits with my estimated dates from the census!!!! Also he is CROSSED OFF The single freeman list for 1808--so he was probably close to the tax age which was 21 and or he married the same year.
10100 16-25 with one son under 10 and 00100 wife 16-25. So one child. Fits. This is definitely my John Jacob as the other trails and tales John, a brother to Jacob who married Barbara Fisher, was already out of the state and in Missouri Territory. And any children Jacob Junior who married Julian Weyant had would be VERY young as he was only about 26 at the time. In fact, Jacob is on the 1810 in the same township with my jacob age 26-45 and Julian is 16-26. They have one son and one daugther under 10. No way these two are father and son. This is why it is so confusing. They are even on the same page..... I think he must have moved to Greenfield to marry. John was taxed in 1810 in Greenfield Township, Bedford, Pennsylvania 16-25 on the census so born 1785-1790 or so. If he was 20 to 25, which he probably was because he was married with one son. He was taxed in 1811 in Greenfield Township, Bedford, Pennsylvania On the returns: John Burket valued at 216 dollars. He wasn't on the originals. Check again. OK, on the original he is listed as John Burkel. He has 100 warranted acres one horse and two cows. His value is the same as on the returns: 216. THIS IS BIG ABE'S FATHER. Need to order 1812 and on to get the rest of the story..... John on 1820 Greenfield: 320010 20010 02 1 male 26-45 and wife 26-45 and two engaged in agriculture which means that of the two sons 10-16, one must be counted in that. John appeared in the census in 1830 in Greenfield Township, Bedford, Pennsylvania. 0122101 1200001 0 under 5, one 5-10, 2 boys 10-15, two 15-20, one 20-30 and John Jacob is 40-50 1 girl under 5, two 5-10 and Elisabeth is 40 to 50. So the son 20 to 30 is Joseph and the two 15 to 20 are John Jacob and Daniel, then Henry is 10-15 and possibly samuel in there too. Abraham isn't born yet? So he would be on the 1840 listed as one son age 5-10. Check it out. He is NO WHERE NEAR the other younger John Burket who is probably the 1809 John born to Jacob and Julian. 8 pages away....
Joseph Ake and Jacob Claar....witnesses to will... He appeared in the census in 1840 in Greenfield Township, Bedford, Pennsylvania. John Burgart. He is right next to Jacob Burgart his son who married Sarah Stiffler. There is a John Stiffler on the same page. 00200201 0110011 so no sons ages 0-5 and none 5 to 10 but two sons 10-15 and then two sons 30 to 40 and John Jacob is 50-60 Means Joseph, John Jacob, Henry not married yet. Checked. Joseph still living with mother Elisabeth on 1850, not married. Henry. Not married. Daniel--married with one child on 1840 Abraham could be listed as a son 10 years old instead of 9 years old......seems to be a gap here. When were the older sons married? by 1840? no daughters 0 to 5, one 5-10, one 10-15 and one 30 to 40, Elisabeth is 40 to 50.
This is John Jacob born between 1784 and 1788, much earlier. And HE is the father of big Abe, not John born 1803. Try to trace these two-- one born earlier. My John would be a child on the 1790 to Jacob. The other John would be a child on the 1800 to Jacob and Julian, but I don't think Jacob was here yet....not until later. check the tax lists. That is the other Burket famly. John born 1803 to Jacob Burket Junior and Julian Weyant, Samuel is Jacob's brother who moved out of state. Jacob and Julia name another son Samuel after this brother, and Julian is a widow and living with that Samuel on the 1850.
THis John Jacob is CLEARLY mistaken to be the son of Jacob Junior of Greenfield Township. NOT SO. He is ours. the other family have him born in 1795 which means that Jacob Junior was only 16 when he had him. THIS WAS NOT TYPICAL OF THE GERMAN, THEY MARRIED LATE. This is where the error lies... The Jacob Emery Burket letter clearly states that Jacob had a son JOHN. 7 sons and daughters according to the letter written by Jacob Emery Burket of Claysburg. Could this be a John Jacob? NEW AS OF JULY 2005. The following info: Elisabeth is a widow born 1788 Age 62 on 1850 in Greenfield Township. She is living next door to 34 year old Daniel and wife Margaret 28. In her household is a 40 year old Joseph, a 32 year old henry and a 15 year old (probably grandaughter) mary who is helping, I am sure with household duties. Daniel married Margaret Stiffler, sister to Sarah Stiffler. Daniel and John Jacob Married sisters. The daniel in Elisabeth's household married a Margaret. All this fits. Joseph is a miller and has two mills with his name on them on the 1876 Greenfield Map in the photo folder. This confirms, the area is ours. There are two other Burket properties not far from the mill. One looks like an O. Burket, but it could be a D. Burket. Daniel. Interesting. These are GRANDCHILDREN OF MY JACOB!!!! I did it! other possible info: 1770-1780 born John Burket (60-70 on the 1840 in Jenner Township, Somerset, PA
John Jacob Burket and Elisabeth "Bigham?" Bucher were married in 1809 in Greenfield Township, Bedford, Pennsylvania. Appears on tax lists in 1810 as married, is on census in 1810 as married with one son under 10 ears old. Was crossed off the single freeman list for greenfield in 1808. Too young? Then married the end of 1809 after having turned 21 (not making the tax lists that year due to his age) and by summer of 1810 has one child.
Bartholomew Bucher. WOW that sure fits. must be it. he is number 118 and John Jacob is number 106. Fairly close. Where did I get Bucher. From the Claysburg Cemetery records?
The following is old news and is not right; but must figure; who is this Jacob? Possibly son of Jacob Junior who married Julian Weyant? If the Elisabeth in Greenfield 1850 married to John the Mill Wright is this same couple then the census lists her as 36 so born in 1814. She could have been sensitive and lied about her age and could even have been 46. Who knows. Jacob was 44. She is the only Elisbeth married to a Jacob Burket in Greenfield Township and probably in the County. There is a 22 year old Isaac R. Bowser living with them who is also a Mill Wright. Could it be that this is Elisabeth Bowser? This info is correct below.
Further down is a David Burket and a Barbara with children George and Abraham. WOA, fall 2004. David is a son of Frederick Burket and DAisy Swoveland and George B is a son of David born 1887 according to headstone in upper claar. So, this COULD be the right Abraham and Elisabeth! She appeared in the census in 1850 in Greenfield Township, Blair, Pennsylvania. Widow. This must be Elisabeth Boucher. Is this her? A David on same page. In 30s. Another son? She appeared in the census in 1860 in Greenfield Township, Blair, Pennsylvania. Next to Henry and Joseph etc. Bigham? died before 1870. New as of April 2008, on motherbedford.com, http://www.motherbedford.com/WalterGen04.htm there is a lineage that shows Imlers, Walters, Claars and Ickes. It shows Elisabeth Ickes marrying Abraham J. Burket. It also shows Jacob Imler (1788) marrying Barbara Walter who is a daughter of Joseph Walter and RAchel Bucher.
I think I just had a break through on Elisabeth. There have been so many different last names attached to her, so I went to the 1810 census. She and John Jacob had just been married the year before and had a tiny son, probably Joseph who is living with her when she is a widow on the 1850 census. Anyway, close by is a Bartholomew Bucher. He is either a widower over 45 or he is age 16-25 and has probably his father living with him. Perhaps this is a father or brother to Elisabeth and that means she would be Elisabeth Bucher. The only likely name in the town, but who knows. Could be that the information that follows below is more accurate: My old thinking: I am dropping the alternative spellings for Elisabeth's surname. I have decided to go with J. Emery's letter because there are so many different last names attributed to her, all without a source. At least this is a family source and this is Jacob Emery's great grandfather. The other reason: I found a Bigham on the census in Bedford Township, John Bigham. He is over 45 and wife also. Possibly came from Tyrone Township, Adams County. Also there is a possible Brother, James Bigham who is living next to a Stifler in Greenfield Township. Same township where John Jacob moved.
Bugher is spelling from Debra1112@aol.com But then she has john being born to Jacob Burket son of Jacob and Barbara fisher. And Burket Trails and Tales has 'big abe' married to Elisabeth Boucher. new June 2004...found Elisabeth age 62 on 1850 in Blair so born 1788. This is about the right age. She is a widow and living with sons, Joseph and Henry. New as of 2005. Confirmed. She has a son living next door, Daniel, who is married to a Margaret. This is Margaret Stiffler. Daniel and John Jacob married Stifflers (sisters?). Debra's file has her last name Bugher. I did find an Abraham Bugher and an Aaron and a John in Washington Township, Fayette, Pennsylvania on the 1820 census. They are the ONLY Bughers in the State. for what it is worth. Fayette is just west of Somerset. This was about the time many moved to Fayette because of the mines. Dunbar Township was where Christopher's daughter moved. Very unusual name, Bugher, only 10 in the entire United States on the 1820, three in Pennsylvania. Only 17 Bouchers in entire U.S. and one is in Somerset, Somerset, Pennsylvania 18 Bighams in Pennsylvania, most from Adams county and a few from Westmoreland-- 2 in Bedford county; John in Bedford Township and a James in GREENFIELD. Maybe this is why he moved! Because of a girl! James is 26-45. He is living next to John Stifler and widow Dobson. There is a Heronurus Bridgegam living in Brothersvalley Township in 1800 Somerset...also a Martin Boger. Interesting because Elisabeth Bigham, Bridggame, whatever, who married John Burket and had Abraham.... well, Abraham has a son named Martin! (Austin's brother). Bridaham John G There are Bradigums on the land records in Londonderry township in the 1800s There is a George Bridegum age 39 with wife elisabeth on 1860 in brothersvalley, Somerset, Pennsylvania. Genealogical and Personal History of Fayette County Pennsylvania, Vol II Genealogical and Biographical Lyons Sarah Boucher was a daughter of Henry (2) Boucher , youngest son of Henry (1) Boucher , the founder of the family in America . He was no doubt a Frenchman from one of the provinces bordering Germany , as he spoke the German language. He came in the ship "President," it is said, and in the old Boucher family Bible it is written in his own hand that he landed in Philadelphia , June 20, 1755 , with wife and children. He settled in Berks county, Pennsylvania , where he purchased land in Albany township and followed farming. He was a member of the German Reformed church, and chiefly instrumental in erecting the church edifice known as "Bethel " near his home. It has been rebuilt three times, but still retains the name given it by its pioneer founder. It is further known of him that he lost heavily by the revolution, that he died early in the nineteenth century, and is buried in the churchyard near the church which he built. He had sons: Peter , William , Philip , Jacob and Henry . Peter died without issue; William settled in Ross county, Ohio , in 1801 ; Philip remained with his father and inherited the estate, much of which is yet owned by descendants; Jacob settled in Schuylkill county ; Henry , the youngest son, was born in Berks county, Pennsylvania , March 10, 1759 . He married Mary Shoemaker , and moved to Hamburg, Pennsylvania , where he farmed and followed his trade of shoemaker. In 1801 he started west on horseback with a neighbor, Jacob Will , intending to purchase lands there and settle. He proceeded as far as the Miami valley , in Ohio , where the prevalence of fever and ague so alarmed him that they returned east. On reaching Somerset county, Pennsylvania , they bought lands to which they moved their families in the spring of 1802 . The lands bought by Henry Boucher lay about three miles from Glade , and consisted of four hundred and fifty acres. He spent the remainder of his days there as a farmer, and died January 22, 1834 . His wife, Mary Shoemaker , born January 22, 1762 , died May 12, 1840 . They are both buried at Glade, Somerset county . Children: Jacob , Henry , Christian , David , Solomon , John , Elizabeth , Magdaline , Mary , Rebecca , Catherine , Sarah (of previous mention), married Jonathan Lyons , and Hannah . Milford is just southwest of Somerset Township, Somerset. John Jacob Burket and Elisabeth "Bigham?" Bucher had the following children:
