Next to Samuel Lohr and Abraham Lape. Page 104 in Shade. He is in manufacturing (this is shown on the second page which I did not download to my files) which fits with 1850 as he is listed there as a Carpenter. So the one child is Noah!!!! fits with 1850 occupation between 20 and 30, wife also...one son under 5. This is definitely him which means he moved from shade to stoneycreek as shade is a later township! Could be that he was living on his grandfathers land--(Christopher) but after he died he moved to his own peice of land. Makes sense. At one time the family had land that was on both sides of the state road, which was the border between shade and stoneycreek and would mean it would be easy to be enumerated in either---on the same piece of property!!
10001-00010 page 103 B He was taxed in 1840 in Shade Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania He was taxed in 1841 in Shade Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania; 150 acres 75 cleared This is definitely Christopher's grandson as he is identified on the 1840. Israel was taxed between 1843 and 1846 in Shade Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania He was taxed in 1847 in Shade Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania 200 acres. Listed as tenant on Daniel Sarber property. his value is 300. NEW as of July 2003: The Daniel Sorber Farm is still there in Shade Township--not far from where our family farm was. I will be visiting this farm. It is interesting that this Israel is living on the Daniel Sorber Property in 1847. He is on the 1850 in Stonycreek. Interesting: Michael is in Shade 1850 next door to a Daniel Sorber age 39. There is a 73 year old Daniel Sorber and wife Elisabeth age 65 on the Shade 1850 census page 116 and he is a farmer worth 10,000 dollars living next to 55 year old John Lambert who looks to be a widower. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Stoneycreek Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania.142 Listed with his 6 children Age 37. Carpenter. Page 121 Stoneycreek. There is a Samuel Ringler age 16 living in the household listed as a laborer. Also, Levi Burket is living with them he is age 24 and also a Carpenter. Levi is probably a younger brother of Israel. 44 year old Joseph Sorber and wife about 4 houses up. There is a 68 year old Jacob Ringler and 71 year old wife Eve in Stoneycreek Township 1850 census page 118 for what it is worth. Conemaugh Borough. Page 228 This is the lower part of Cambria which was formed from Somerset in 1804
Israel is 57 and Laborer value is 500/60 born Pennsylvania AGE is off, should be 47 Mary is 53 Mary's age is correct... she was 5 years older. Maybe Israel didn't want to fight in the civil war and so told his age at 57, the cut off being 50. Francis is 15 Ellen is 14 Catherine is 10 Ann is 8 Clara is 6 Isabel is 4 OH MY GOSH! Just found a timeline for Pennsylvania online fall 2006-- Johnstown CAMBRIA WORKS becomes the largesst mills in the COUNTRY after the civil war! Began 1854. So Israel is on the tax lists in 1851 in Stony Creek and THAT is why he disappears. He moves his little family to Cambria to work in the MILLS!!!!! He served in the military G.A.R. in 1864. His headstone has a GAR marker! Grand Army of the Republic! Time to look in those records..... OK conclusion: The marker is there for his two sons Daniel land Noah who served. Daniel died in battle, Noah lived to be an old man and is buried in the Bedford Cemetery. Earlier cemetery transcriptions do not show a G.A.R. marker on his grave. It is a more recent addition and is a small flag that has to be more current--even within the last 2 or 3 years. Israel served in the military Civil War in 1864 in , Somerset, Pennsylvania. Page 270 in the Cemetery Book He died on 24 December 1866 in Somerset, Pennsylvania.145 There is no G.A.R. entry with this tombstone inscription as with others in Della's book He was buried in 1866 in Daley Cemetery, Somerset, Pennsylvania.146,147 Page 35 Lot 69 Israel Burket OP 45 (old plan) Israel Burket April 20 1816- December 24 1866. 3 Unknown George Anderson May Anderson John Anderson The latter 4 entries were in new ink. Spaces were left in the book inferring that there would be room for later burials.
Then a later entry? Says Lot 10. wierd. This one has Mrs. Michael Burket buried there as well. Age not known. Israel had his estate probated in 1867 in , Somerset, Pennsylvania. Docket Volume 9 page 113. I have copy. It is his goods and chattels Executors volume 3 page 18. I need to order. It is on film 558496 covering 1867-1885 The Daley cemetery records in Somerset, Pennsylvania include Israel on a list with four other men buried there who served in the civil war, yet no military record is on file in the Civil War Veterans Card File at the Pennsylvania State Archives. Interestingly enough, two of the four men on the cemetery list, Benjamin Bender and David Lambert, were appraisers for Israel's estate at his death.
His estate was probated on 25 January 1867 in Somerset County, Pennsylvania and appraised by John Grove, David Lambert and Benjamin Bender on 15 February of the same year. Among the belongings in the widows election for his estate we find carpenter tools, a wind mill, a spinning wheel, bed and bedding, a table and seven chairs, some hogs, cattle and a horse, and the most expensive item-a wagon.
