166. James Carlos Burket (Farmer) was born on 15 September 1850 in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa.158,159 He appeared in the census in 1900 in Lexington, Cleveland, Oklahoma. Indexed as James C Birchett. Brother John Duke is living with him...widowed. He appeared in the census in 1910 in Lexington, Cleveland, Oklahoma. James died on 28 December 1932.158 He was buried in 1932 in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Noble, Cleveland County, Oklahoma.158 My Name is Danita Kaye Burkett and I am a descendent of George Burkett, Sr., and Catherine Swoveland. I would be most interested in sharing some information and perhaps photographs that might be of interest to you. John Burkett Sr. my great-great grandfather, (son of George Jr.) was a mormon and went to Utah from Council Bluffs. He had two wives--Jane Oldham Duke and Mary Ann Thompson. My great-grandfather John D. (John Duke) was born to Jane in 1848 in Iowa. His little brother was James Carlos Burkett. (You have him listed as "Carlos" but his name was James Carlos) My father, Don James Carlos Burkett was named after him. There was also a sister born to John Sr. and Jane Oldham Duke in Iowa in 1852. Her name was Sarah E. John Burkett Sr. along with his two wives Jane and Mary Ann Thompson moved to Provo and can be found there on the 1860 census. (You will note the
census has James Carlos listed as Jas C). John Sr. and Mary Ann had several children in Utah territory and they are listed on the census as well. John Sr. and Jane's two oldest sons, John Duke and James Carlos left Utah. James moved to Missouri and married Barbara Ann Dodson on July 5, 1874.
Meanwhile John Duke moved to Oklahoma Territory and married a full-blooded Chickasaw Indian. (Prior to the "Land Run of 1889" no one was allowed to live in Indian Territory unless they had permission of the Indians or were married to an Indian. The U.S. Calvary arrested violators...) John Duke Burkett had permission and started a ranch. His brother James Carlos came and joined him (after his marriage to Barbara in Missouri). John Duke Burkett and his Chickasaw wife had my grandfather Frank Marion Burkett, born in Paoli, Oklahoma in 1882. I do not know the name of John Duke Burkett's wife, my great-grandmother. She died when my grandfather was only four. James Carlos Burkett was able to aquire the Burkett Farm in Oklahoma during the great Land Run of 1889. John Duke Burkett did not feel that he was able to raise his only son Frank without a mother in Indian country so he took Frank to the Farm of James Carlos and Barbara Burkett and they raised him. John D. Burkett died young as well. James Carlos (everyone called him Jim or J.C.) Burkett, son of the good
mormon John Samuel Burkett - was known far and wide in Oklahoma as being an honest and God-fearing man. His children were all Christians and good people. They became teachers and Educators and the Burkett Library at the University of Oklahoma in Norman is named after Jesse Burkett. They were all musical and loved hymn singing. I have very old photographs of Great Uncle Jim (James Carlos Burkett) and his wife Barbara Dodson Burkett. Also the other mormon Burkett's... great-great uncle Noah and aunt Kate.
I am no genealogist but I do have some wonderful family records. My paternal side is this: Danita Kay Burkett (12/8/59) Don James Carlos Burkett (8/23/25 - 9/5/96) Frank Marion Burkett (11/02/1882) Paoli, OK John Duke Burkett (1848) Iowa John Samuel Burkett (3/21/1822) George Burkett, Jr. (10/18/1788) George Burkett, Sr. (1770 in Germany?) Israel Burkett Thank you. Please write back if you know how I might find out more information about John Duke Burkett and his Chickasaw Indian wife. Sincerely, Danita The following info is from Steve at johnjs@msn.com

Through the wonders of the internet I found the research you have done on Israel Burket. Anyway, my paternal great grandfather was Lewis Leslie Burkett. His father was James Carlos Burkett and mother was Barbara Dodson Burkett. I could scan the book that Orion put together and email that to you. it is about 35 pages but I would be happy to if it would help. Thank you, Kelly Frost Winston-Salem, NC
