26. Christopher Burket (Shoemaker) (Farmer) was born about 1799 in , Someset, Pennsylvania. Age 70 on 1870 census. Age 52 on the 1850 Census.Listed as Christian. Farmer with 400 acres. On same page as Chris Senior and Michael on 1830. This is a STRONG evidence of the relationship of this Christian with Michael and Chris Senior. Plus now as of November 2003 I have more proof. In a box found in someone's attic was Christopher Burket's Pension Request and ALSO A sherriffs report on moneys owed to a man from Oliver Burket mentioning his mother's Estate and a John C. Burket. He was taxed in 1819 in Shade Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania Unless this is for his father....who knows. He was taxed in 1829 in Shade Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania (Shoemaker) In 1829 Christopher was a Shoemaker in Shade Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania. He is listed in the tax records as a shoemaker. His father was also a shoemaker. He appeared in the census in 1830 in Shade Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania; 100 acres 5 cleared.63 On same page as Chris Senior and Michael. This is a STRONG evidence of the relationship of this Christian with Michael and Chris Senior. Next to Christian is William Ling. Interesting. It says william ling (of phillip). and then there is a william ling of Christian next to Christopher senior and Michael. 1000010 wife is 15-20 and he is 30-40 and they have one son under 5. He appeared in the census in 1840 in Stony Creek Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania. Age 40-50 and enumerated as Burchcart. It looks like the enumerator wrote Burhart and then tried to insert a c and change the a to an e. So he was trying to change it to Burchert? Two boys under 5 and two girls 5 to 10. Wife is now 20-30 so more than likely 30 or so. See how the children line up. They would have 2 over 5 so probably married 7-9 years in 1840. No they were married on the 1830 so that means married at least 11 years. And the oldest child who was under 5 is now under 15. Think of it that way. Christopher was taxed in 1843 in Quemahoning Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania78 10 acres, one horse, one cow, one house, one lot. Not sure if this info goes with him or his father Stophel. This is DEFINITELY this Christian as his father was deceased by 1 Jan 1849 (in fact his headstone says 1841) and Mary Ann was receiving a widows pension from the state of Pennsylvania. That means all of the other tax records were probably also for this Christian a son of the 1747 Revolutionary War Christian. For instance, the 1848 tax record lists the same acerage as the 1849; 75 acres. In earlier years it only varies by a few acres, and shows him starting out with only 10. In 1850 he is not listed. This is because in 1850 he is in Allegheny township where he is listed on the census there with his family. This land is land probably somewhere close to or part of land that his older brother, John Jacob burket was given by his grandfather Ross. In other words, possibly Jenner Township area. He was taxed in 1844 in Quemahoning Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania78 one hourse one cow 33 acres of land. Not sure if this info goes with him or his father. Is it possible that Christopher gave his land in Quemahoning to this son Christian? Or was it Michael? He was taxed in 1845 in Quemahoning Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania78 Christopher was taxed in 1846 in Quemahoning Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania78 He was living in 1847 in Near Stoyestown, Somerset, Pennsylvania.98 Son Cornelius was christened here. He was taxed in 1847 in Shade Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania78 80 Acres and tenant on Daniel Sorber Property with Israel who had 200 acres. Christopher was taxed in 1848 in Shade Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania; 75 acres78 75 acres, one horse, no cattle. See notes on tax year 1849. He was taxed in 1849 in Shade Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania; 75 acres78 Christian is taxed on 75 acres valued at 56 dollars with one horse and one cow. This is DEFINITELY this Christian as his father was deceased by 1 Jan 1849 and Mary Ann was receiving a widows pension from the state of Pennsylvania. That means all of the other tax records were probably also for this Christian a son of the 1747 Revolutionary War Christian. For instance, the 1848 tax record lists the same acreage; 75 acres.
In 1850 he is not listed. This is because in 1850 he is in Allegheny township where he is listed on the census there with his family. I have proof of this with the Sheriff's document I bought from the Lady in Somerset County who found it at an auction. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Allegheny Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania.94,108 There is also a George Burket and a David Burket on the same page in Allegheny Township with this Christian whose chidlren were born in Stoyestown (or at least christened in stoyestown) Farmer 400 acres. Interestingly enough, there is yet another SORBER living two houses from Christian. He is 50 years old, Henry Sorber and wife Margaret. Christopher appeared in the census in 1860 in Allegheny Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania. page 55 and listed as Christopher Burkhard age 62, wife Matlida age 50. Farmer, property valued at 1000. Both born Pennsylvania. They are next to John G. Witt on one side and wife Caroline. John and Caroline have a child PEARSON, for what it's worth. These children are yet in the household: Pierce 18 Mary 16 Walter 12 Franklin 10 Catherine 8 Matilda 3 Two houses up there is a Lena age 28 married to Frederick Curtis. She is right age to be Lana, the oldest of Christian and Matlida. She has 3 boys, George, Albert and Levi. On the other side is Samuel Null and family, Levi Menges and family. He was living in 1860 in Near Allegheny. From Michelle Hamel He appeared in the census in 1870 in Allegheny Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania. Age 70 on 1870. Page 239 and listed as Christopher. Farmer with 400 value in land. Christopher had his estate probated in 1878 in , Somerset, Pennsylvania. A Burket is mentioned as husband of Matilda in a Sherriff's order for payment of a debt that Oliver has--using his share of the estate money coming him from his brother John C. (Cyrus) who was the administrator of the estate. He died between 1870 and 1877 in of Allegheny Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania. 1878 is the date of the Sheriff's document...can't tell if it is March or what, but it is the 17th. The document mentions the estate of Matlida and ________ (the sherriff not knowing the first name of Matilda's husband) which means she probably survived him, and by 1878 had passed away. Careful, I don't think George Null's obituary said where Christian died on the railroad. From web searches last night, I think the railroad extended from Pittsburgh all the way up into the Will's Creek valley in Bedford County. There it hooked up with the Bridgeport and Bedford railroad. I couldn't find Bridgeport on the map, but there's a B & O line into that valley so that's probably the old Pittsburg and Connellsville right of way (they were bought by the B & O eventually). So Christian might have died only a few miles from home but somewhere on that railroad, or working on it, or whatever. / Tom "Thomas Gull" <tmrgull@msn.com> August 2006

I should have stated in my previous email that Christian was killed on the Pittsburgh Connellsville Railroad, who's station was known as the Connellsville Depot. Anyways, Cyrus was working for the railroad per the 1870 census along with his brother. This is from the obit of George Null As of 27 November 2003 I have more proof that this is Christopher Burket (1747)'s son. In a box of old papers, letters and photos from an auction in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, the oldest documents are; 1. Pension Application for Christopher Burket's Revolutionary War Service and 2. Papers having to do with the estate of Matilda Burket and _______ Burket. Interesting, this means that Christian must have died so long ago that they didn't have his first name for the legal documents. Mentions Oliver and John C. Because these two documents were together in the box and the only documents dating into the 1800's, this leads us to believe that Christian is related to Christopher. The box came from Brenda Creasy in Denver, Pennsylvania. They must have come from someone's attic long after the original family moved. 14 June 1859 'Whereof the said Oliver Burket duly convict, as appears to us said Wm Kingson and that John C Burket admstr of Matlida Burket and _________Burket has goods a chattles, debt, rights, credits, moneys and effects in his hands, liable to be attached and levied in satisfaction of the judgment aforesaid. Now we command you that you attach all and singular the debts due to the said..............and deposits of money made by ___and goods and chatteles pawned, pledged or demised by signed in 1878
Oliver Burket
There was a Christian Junior and Senior on the Census in 1830 and he has Shade township ties. Why is he not on the Stoyestown records with the other children of Christopher? I don't know. I do know that he is right smack dab in the middle of the Berlin records and the Stoystown records. Perhaps he slipped through the cracks, or perhaps the earliest Stoystown records were incomplete. One thing I need to do is take the David Burket age 65 on the 1850 and wife Susannah age 70 living next to George Burket 35 and wife Charlotte age 26 with daughter Mary 4 and Son DAVID 2---all farmers--and figure out from whom they descend. Probably Jacob from the other burket family, but I need to document this and assure that they don't have a 51 year old brother named Christian!!!! Married Matilda and had 7 kids and shows up in 1850 census Allegheny as farmer with 400 acres. But children (Lana 1836, Cyrus 1838 ) born in stonycreek and Oliver and (Cornelius 1847) stoyestown. On census in Shade Township in 1830.
From the sounds of the children's names Matlida was Irish. This is a very interesting concept... that of starting out in Stoyestown and ending up in Allegheny. There are other family members in this same situation. Why Allegheny? What are the ties with the other Burkets.. for instance John 1756 who had a Jacob who named his twins Josiah and Israel. John lived first in Quemahoning early on and then later in Alleghenny with his brother Jacob born 1758. One reason for Allegheny is the fact that Henry Boose settled there. He was Christian's Uncle (married his father's sister). Interesting: Christopher Burket shows up in shade township somerset on tax lists up until 1835. Then from 1836 to 1844 he is not there. then suddenly in 1845 and 1846 there are TWO christophers on the tax lists--father and son, and then none. And CHristian then moves to Allgeheny Township.
In the Somerset County tax records for the year 1845 a Christopher Burket is taxed on 1 cow, 1 house probably rented and no land for a total value of $15 for tax valuation. He paid $4 state tax and $4 county tax. He is living in Quemahoning Twp, Somerset County. A Christopher is also living in Shade Twp near Israel. In 1846 christopher Burket is taxed on a $20 valuation but has no land, cows or horses in Quemahoning Twp. In 1847 christopher Burket does not appear in the tax records and he does not appear in the years after that time. What this means is that Christopher DID live beyond 1841. He lived until 1846. So either he lived to reach age 99 or he was indeed born in 1753 per the request for pension from the State of Pennsylvania which means he would hav been only 93 when he died. From Michelle Hamel in February 2007
Chris and Matilda in Allegheny Twp in 1849. Chris and Matilda in Allegheny Twp in 1850. Christian Burket, renouncing his rights in the estate of Henry Gull in 1853. Christian Burket in Alleghany Twp in 1860. Christian Burket in Alleghany Twp in 1870. Christian Burket and Matilda mention in Article of Agreement in May 1873. At this point both Chris and Matilda are still alive. In the agreement. Matilda's land, now bordering, Henry Shurie, Herman Long and Henry ? and Samuel Smith. and other's is NOW 300 acres....to be held in escrow in the hands of GLESSNER. So they started out with 419. and have 300. Maybe Cyrus got the 119 as he was living on land that border theirs and I didn't see any deed but I could have missed it. I'll look the deeds up to when he sold it to Emma.. Susan, there seems to be some judgement and a something about $20.00 rental? Anyways, Matilda died between June 1873 and 1874, now there are only 70 acres and a two story farm house and a good log barn, mentioned for Sale in Matilda's estate papers. So maybe Hermon Long and Samuel Smith and Even Henry Shurie hold some clue's to the land. Because you would think there are some land deeds to the land that went from 419 to 300 to 70 acres.... Christian died after Matilda and he's on the list of people attending the calling sale of Matilda's personnel items. So much for now, Michelle
Christopher Burket (Shoemaker) (Farmer) and Matilda were married about 1829 in of , Somerset, Pennsylvania. Matilda was born in 1813 in of Allegheny Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania. Age 37 on 1850 She appeared in the census in 1850 in Allegheny Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania. She had her estate probated in 1859 in , Somerset, Pennsylvania. Sheriff's Court order in possession of Susan H. Jackman She was 46. Did I do that right? Her husband was also deceased. Matilda appeared in the census in 1870 in Allegheny Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania. age 58 She died before 1874 in of Allegheny Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania. See Sheriff's papers for Oliver Burket Debt dated 1878. Matilda and her husband are listed as deceased and their estate is mentioned. She had her estate probated in 1874 in , Somerset, Pennsylvania. Obviously Irish. Is her last name Meyers? There is an Emanuel Meyers living next door on 1850 in Allegheny Township, Someset County and he is one year older, has son OLIVER one year older than Christian and Matilda's Oliver. It is NOT a common name among these people. INTERESTING. Also, there is a Henry Sorber next to Emanuel! Is her last name Menges? THere is a 70 year old Catherine Menges living next door in 1870. She is in the household of George Menges and there is a Franklin age 28 living with them. Perhaps Christopher's son Franklin was named for this Franklin? Christopher Burket (Shoemaker) (Farmer) and Matilda had the following children: 83 | i. | Burket was born in 1829 in of Shade, Somerset, Pennsylvania. a Male child under 5 is in the household of Christopher and Matilda on the 1830 census | +84 | ii. | John Cyrus Burket (Farmer). | +85 | iii. | Sophia Burket. | +86 | iv. | Lana Burket. | 87 | v. | Oliver Burket (Burkhart) was born on 20 August 1840 in of Allegheny Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania.98,109 He was christened on 12 May 1843 in Stoyestown, Somerset, Pennsylvania.98 spelled Burkhart. Parents are witnesses. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Allegheny Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania. Oliver had a debt recorded in the County Court in in , Someset, Pennsylvania in 1859 see general notes He died in 1859 in , Bedford, Pennsylvania. See general notes Wm [Keyson/] vs Oliver Burket and others. Oliver would have been 19 years old when the debt was first made...and then in 1878 or 1879 the debt was still owed to William Keyson. Looks like they want it out of Oliver's pocket even though the estate of his father Christian and his mother Matlida was was administered by his older brother John C.(I am assuming here that John C. is an older brother, that indeed this is Cyrus as listed on the 1850 as a 12 year old. This document concerning the debt is an original and was with Christopher Burket's Military Pension Request--also an original and dated 1818. I am thinking that the entire box of photos and letters belong to descendants of either Oliver or John C.--probably Oliver as he would be the one keeping record of the debt so that when it was paid he would have all the paper work. Interesting. Have to see if any of the first names of the photos match up with this German/Scotch-Irish family! NOTE: Cannot find Oliver on the 1870 or the 1880. I am thinkng perhaps he is dead and had been for a while, so when his mother finally passed away, this guy sent the sherriff out to summons John C. and collect the debt from the proceeds after the estate was divided. Must look for further probate concerning this. Perhaps he even died the year he owed the money, i.e. 1859...the year he turned 19. So debt cannot be paid until his mother dies and the estate is divided. YEP. That is it. | +88 | vi. | Mary Burket (Burkhart). | 89 | vii. | Pearson Burket was born in 1845 in Allegheny, Somerset, Pennsylvania. He died on 5 November 1862. This death date assumes the info in the notes section is correct and that this Pearson is indeed the same Pearson that enlisted in the Union Army in 1862. If the info is correct, he enlisted and was killed in battle 4 days later. OK he is only 5 on the 1850 census when he should be 10. Gotta figure this out. Are the stoystown records wrong? I checked, he isn't on the Stoystown records. I had recorded his birth/christening info but it belonged to Oliver. so I had the same dates for both Pearson and Oliver. they are clearly 2 seperate people per the 1850; Oliver is 9 and Pearson is 5 with Mary 7 inbetween I can type Pearson Burket in on a Family Search 'search' which is very smart at spellings and variations. I only get one; Pearson on the 1850 with father and mother Chrisian and Matilda Burket. This infers that the following information is true and that he had no descendants due to his young age at death in battle (17). Name: Pearson Burket Company: E Unit: 158 Pennsylvania Inf. Somerset, March 14- Street Commissioner Franklin Burkett of Somerset, is proud of the fact that he belongs to a family in which race suicide is unknown. Commissioner Burkett was born in Allegheny Township, near the Topper distillery, a son of Christopher and Matilda Burkett. His father was married twice. By the first marriage, the family to which Commissioner belongs, there were four children and by the second union there were thirteen. The grandchildren are so numerous that Commissioner Burkett has not accuratley computed them. Commissioner Burkett's eldest sister, Mrs. George Null, is the mother of 14 children. Another sister, Mrs Frederick Custer, is the mother of 13. Cyrus Burkett who was married twice, was the father of 23 children, while his brother, Albert, also married twice, reared a family of (looks like 15 or 16).
