Third Generation

12. Michael Burket (Laborer) was born about 1787. 64 years old on the 1850 census. 76 on the 1860 and between 50 and 60 on the 1840. He was taxed in 1819 in Shade Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania 50 Acres About 32 years old He appeared in the census in 1830 in Shade Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania. Spelled Michare Burget on Census Index. He is on page 112 and there is an Israel on page 113 (his brother). There is a John also on page 113 (probably John Jacob also a brother). There is a Christian) on page 112 (his father). There is a Christian junior on page 113 (probably his brother). All spelled Burget!!!!

3012001-1010001 So that is 50-60 for Michael and wife and a 20-30 year old male and female and 3 boys 0-5 and a boy and girl 10-20. Wow. He was taxed in 1832 in Shade Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania; 240 acres 5 cleared etc. He was taxed between 1833 and 1840 in Shade Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania; 300 acres 5 cleared etc. Concecutively taxed every year with this same amount of land and same cleared. He appeared in the census in 1840 in Shade Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania. Page 108 next to Christopher. Age 50-60. I think the reason Michael is not on the church records is because he was the oldest and the church records didn't go back that far. It is interesting, however, that Michael is not on any of the same church records as a parent.... He was taxed in 1845 in Shade Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania; 34 acres 311 acres one horse one cow one house valued at 196 and taxed 71. 1846 also. Same info but now with cattle and a house. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Shade Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania.67 Page 102 Next to Daniel Sorber. This is interesting because Israel and Christopher are tenants on the Daniel Sorber Property in 1847 on the Shade Township Tax lists. Means they are all family.

A Possible grandchild Elisabeth Zimmerman age 6 is living with them. He appeared in the census in 1860 in Berlin Township, Knox, Ohio. Age 76 He was associated with. On 1790 census Christopher has only one son, no daughters. That would make the oldest John Jacob who ended up inheriting land later. Or not? Where does Michael fit in? Then again, there is so much evidence. For instance, Michael is in Shade Township a LONG time and doesn't seem to have a deed for land, or a patent. He has inherited land or been given land by family. I wish I could find him on a map.

HERE IS SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...Israel and Anna Maria have 4 kids living with them on the 1790 census when they are in their 70s!! Quite probably grandchildren--and one could be Michael or John Jacob.

Here is something ELSE to think about: There is a Michael Burger on the ship passenger lists with Israel and Simon!! He used a 'B' as his mark.

Anna Maria Burghard is the sponsor for the birth and christening of Michael and Catherine's daugher Sally born 1818 on the Stoyestown German Reformed Church Records. THis is Mary Ann Ross Burket, the supposed mother of Michael. This is a GREAT peice of evidence from church records tying Michael into the family---- there weren't that many people on the Stoyestown records.

Named after his mother's brother, Michael Ross.

Israel and Christopher are tenants on the Daniel Sorber Property in 1847 on the Shade Township Tax lists. Then in 1850 Michael is 64 years old wife Catherine 66 and he is living next to this same Daniel Sorber who is 39 and a farmer with 2500 acres of land. This definitely ties in Michael to the family. I used to think Michael had a daughter Margaret who married Daniel Sorber Junior, but since then have found the Sorber family online and Daniel married Margaret Brant. There are also Statlers and Copps and Lamberts in the descendancy.

There is, however, an OLDER daniel who is 73 on the 1850 in Shade.

I can safely say that, through MUCH circunmstantial evidence. Michael is a son of Christopher.

I am so happy that I found you!! My father died when he was 36 Aubrey
Burkett, he was the son of Loyal Burkett, Loyal was the son of James
Franklin, James Franklin was the son of Richard, Richard was the son of
Michael and hopefull Michael is the son of Christopher who was the son of.
Israel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AWESOME
I hope it all works out this way. I haven't searched Knox-I'm still trying
to figure out how to do genealogy and what comes next. I just figured out
Michael and Catherine's place with Richard a week ago from the census, this
is just too exciting!!!! I could hardly sleep last night!
I watch my 9 week old grandaughter while my daughter and her husband teach
school. It is little Aubrey Elizabeth's second week.
I wonder who the little 6 year old with Michael and Catherine in the 1850
census was, named Elisabeth Zimmerman age 6? I keep thinking, their
daughter's daughter.
I have no names but Richard as a child of Michael and Catherine's but I
sure can't wait to try and find out more.
It sounds like you are pretty positive we have the same Michael that is
related to the others! What should I do next?
Sincerely, Linda Burkett-Kron

Dear Susan, Thankyou so much for the info!!! When I first started my search
I found you name and emailed you about a Richard Burkett, he died in a
sawmill accident in Dec. of 1861 in Knox Co Ohio. at the age of 31 and he
left 4 small children my gg-grandfather being only 10 days old.
I finally after searching for over a year found Richard, living in Knox Co
Ohio 1860 census Berlin Township. They had his name spelled Richard Barket,
and that is why I believe, it has taken me this long. I noticed that he had
a Michael 76 and a Catherine 76 living with him: no last name for them so I
assumed it might be his parents as I was certain they weren't his wife's
parents. Then I went to the 1850 Pa. census as it said Michael was born
there and here is where I need you to help me see if we are on the right
road!
In the Pa. 1850 census I find two Michael Burket's
Michael Burket 61 or 68 (hard to read)
Polly 50 or 51
several children and I didn't write them down because I didn't believe this
to be my Michael Burket (this family was in Franklin Co. Guincy Twp.)
My Michael was Michael Burket 64 Somerset Co. Jenner Twp.
Catherine 66
Elizabeth Zimmerman 6
This second Michael is my family and he would be my ggg-grandfather. Is
this the one related to Israel??????????? I'm try to not get too excited
here!!!!!!! Linda Burkett-Kron

Hi Susan, I sent for any records that they have on Michael and Catherine
Burket, Knox Co and I asked for any on a George Burket too. We'll see, I
have high hopes. I sent for them yesterday and that is where I got the
estate papers on Michael and Catherine's son, Richard. I will go through
some of the papers and census records that I have looking at them in a new
light to see if I can find any more names or clues. I didn't even know about
Michael when I got the estate papers (for Richard) because I hadn't found
Richard and his family on the census yet.

Do I understand that ANNA MARIA BURKHART and MARY ANN ROSS are the same
person?

Looking at what I wrote down from the 1850 Pa. census the other Michael
Burket was Franklin Co Guincy Twp. he was 61 or 68 (hard to read) and his
wife was Polly 50 or 51 and that he had several children but I didn't write
them down I guess because I was looking for a Michael with a Catherine. Does
this help?

I have never ordered films, period and I'm not sure how to do it or what I'm
even doing. I am game for anything though!

I am looking at the copy of the 1860 Knox Co census. It does say Berlin
township and the post office on the census says Salem Mill and Knox. Richard Barkett (Burkett) 30 Blacksmith Elizabeth 22 ( before I thought it said 32, I got out my notebook of what
her grave marker says and I figure she was more like 24 in the 1860 census)
Her marker said she died in 1919 at the age of 83 years, 5 months and 22 days William 6 Alfred 3 Catherine either 6/12 or 1 and 6/12 Makes sense here Grandmas name,
Catherine.
Michael 76 laborer
Catherine 76
Elisabeth 16 domestic
Johuithan 20 M laborer
Allen 9/12 yrs

I give you this again because I don't think I told you about the last two
names in this household. Elisabeth has been with them since the 1850 census
as Zimmerman and know I wonder could Allen be her baby and maybe Johuithan
strange name be the baby's father? Who knows as of yet.

I was certain Michael's census said Jenner twp. for the 1850 Pa census, I
checked with the census as I read it to make sure. Could this still be the
Michael connected with this family?

My plan is to go to our historical society on sat and spend the day looking
at names around my families to see if they are ones you have mentioned and I
think they are.

For the 1850 Pa census Somerset Co I wrote down names like Christian 52,
farmer
David 65 farmer
George 35 farmer
Israel 37 carpenter/wife Mary 39
Jacob/Margaret 64
Jacob
John 40 Rebecca 40
Michael 64 Catherine 66
I think these are brothers and nephews

One more thought before I close. Do they make plots of land and who they
belonged to back in 1850 1860 or before. Maybe you have one and that is how
you know they are on the Daniel Sorber property. I forget what they are
called but they are really neat as they show who owned the property and you
can see just who the neighbors were! I am sure you can help me with the real
name.

I am looking forward to hearing from you and I am excited to see if Knox Co
has any info for us.
Sincerely Linda Burkett-Kron

War of 1812 Service Records: (for what it's worth)
BURGET MICHAEL LIEUT. COL. BYRD'S COMMAND, MOUNTED, ILLINOIS AND MISSOURI MILITIA. PRIVATE PRIVATE 30 602

Michael Burket (Laborer) and Catharine were married. Catharine68 was born in 1785. She appeared in the census in 1860 in Berlin Township, Knox, Ohio.
