Fourth Generation
84. John Cyrus Burket (Farmer) was born in January 1833 in of Allegheny Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania. New. Found on 1900 census in Stoneycreek. Says born January 1833. age 47 on the 1880 in Allegheny ( makes him born 1833) on page 217c. The only evidence I have SO FAR that John C. is a son of Christian (Other than his location and family association) is that he is the administrator of Christopher (1799)'s will on the sherriff document which was found with The Revolutionary War Christopher's pension application. I have an original document dating 1879 with details and also mentioning an Oliver.
If John C. is indeed a son of Christian and Matilda it would make sense that he would be administrator of the estate, being the oldest. The age fits. New as of 27 June 2004. I am now thinking that John C. and Cyrus are one in the same. I haven't found them on the same census yet.. New as of 14 June 2005. They are one in the same. See 1900 Census. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Alleghenny, Somerset, Pennsylvania. With father Christian and Mother Matlida and age 12 He served in the military enlisted in 1861 in Pennsylvania. John L. C. This index card contains the name of the Civil War soldier (occasionally listed with alias) and the names of any dependants such as a widow, child, etc. Also listed in the service section of the card will be the unit or units where the soldier served, usually abbreviated ("cav" for cavalry, "inf" for infantry, "vol" for volunteer, and so on). The bottom half of the card will list dates of filing and certificate numbers, which researchers will use if they request the full casefile from the National Archives and Records Administration. from Ancestry.com
Another Cyrus age 21 at enlistment in Philadelphia.in 1861. I used to rule him out until I found out that Daniel Burket, son of Israel 1816 enrolled in Philadelphia. So this coulc be our Cyrus. John C. is administrator of his mother's estate, he being the oldest. Find out: is he listed as Cyrus or as John C. on the 1880? Yes, he is. John C. Susan, you don't know how much I appreciate the work you have done on the Burket line. I have been looking for the parents of John C. Burket for years and could never connect him up. You have a question as to John's being Christopher's son but I think you pretty well have it. On the 1900 Stonycreek census I found listed: house #31 family # 33 Burket, Cyrus b. Jan. 1833 age 67 Sarah b. Mar. 1851 age 50 (looks like) Annie b. Apr. 1880 age 2o Dora B. b. Nov. 1884 age 15 Sallie b. July 1890 age 9 Edith b. April 1896 Family # 34 Burket, George b. May 1878 age 22 Emma b. Sept. 1876 age 23 Frank b. Nov. 1894 age 5 Stepson Ernest b. July 1896 age 3 Stepson Lynch, Robert b. Nov. 1898 age 1 Stepson Burket, Dewey b. May 1900 Son 0 mo. Census was taken in June. Now George was the son of John C. Burket-this was my question when I saw the census--why would they be living with Cyrus unless they were related--I had thought maybe uncle? My husband was Truman E. Burket and his father was Ernest -stepson to George.--they both married Emma Yoder George was husband #2. Ernest's father was Walter C. Burket (death certificates) their father being John C. brother to Cyrus. From what you have written and what I have learned it seems you have it correct--please let me know what you think as I have to clear up a relative trying to connect them with John L. C. Burket. Ruth Burket reburket@yahoo.com Hi Susan, My Grandmother, Edith Burket b. 1896 to the parents of John Cyrus Burket and Sarah Jane Barnhart. John Cyrus Burket listed on as a 12 yr old on 1850 cenus which would make him born 1833 he's listed with his mother Matilda born. about 1812/1813 and Father Christian Burket born. about 1798 (Allegheny Twp). This census is my only paper trail for that link. His brother Oliver, sister Mary, Brother Pearson, and Walter C. I believe he also had a brother Franklin and a sister Matilda and one Elizabeth. Walter later lived with John Cyrus and appears on the 1870 census with John and one of his wife's, Louisa. By 1880 Cyrus has a wife, Sarah J. my Great Grandmother b. abt 1854 if you used the 1880 census and if you use the 1910 b. date would be abt. 1850. Now I do not have any evidence that show me that Christian and or Christopher Jr is the Son of Christopher (Stophel) born in Germany who came over at age of 4. who married Mary Ann Ross My Great Grandfather Cyrus, that's what he went by and appears most of the following census as either John C. or Cyrus. Here's where it gets confusing. On the 1910 Census only, he is listed as John L.C. Burkett and Sarah J. and because of everyone else listed living next to him (other relatives) I know this is my Great Grandfather Cyrus. Now I am told there is a JOHN L.C. Burket buried in Downey Cemetery and a women next to him is Sarah. b. 1850, no death date on stone and no initial, which by the way she constantly used but who knows. There is a military index card record for a John L.C. Burket and on the second line says, Burket, Levi (alias) his wife is listed as Sarah P. looks like his service date was 08/16/1840 which doesn't make him serving in the Civil war. Record states D. 133, PA Inf.(the 133 looks pretty clear so I don't think it's 138th) Also, there is a second date on the record, LOOKS like Nov. 16 1918 but not sure. Anyways, someone else told me that the John L.C. Burket, buried in Downey Cemetery, has a GAR marker next to his grave and that it was probably safe to assume he is the same John Burket who served in Company D of the 138th Regiment during the Civil War. Call me stupid, I just don't know what the GAR is suppose to stand for. Now I have seen a ton of John Burket's so this is probably why my grandfather went by Cyrus, I assume. One last note, on the Stoney Creek 1850 Census there is a Levi Burket, listed as a Carpenter, age 24, which would make him born abt 1826 much closer to the dead guy in Downey with 1828-1916 on his head stone. This Levi Burket is living with Noah Burket 12yr, Daniel, 10, Rachel, 6, Ellen 4 and Catharine 2, and parents Israel Burket age looks like 37 and a Mary age 39. Somewhere maybe Levi was a family name I don't know. When it's all said and done, I have John Cyrus documented on my Grandmother's papers but nothing to connected John to pass generations. Thanks for you time. I can see you have done a lot of researching and I appreciate your help. Anyways, I've been corresponding with a Ruth Burket and she has linked us to John Cyrus but my relatives said my grandmother grew up in Berlin which doesn't correspond at all. I'm waiting for 2 documents I order of my grandmothers and I will talk with my 82 yr old Aunt again. Both my Dad and Aunt said Berlin is where she is from . Now alot of those little boroughs may have had a Berlin mailing address. I'm trying to link John Cyrus to Christopher but don't have any kind of connection, not a shred yet. First I started this out of curiousity but my son is in the Michigan National Guard and when they asked what family member where in the service I thought it would be kinda neat to be able to mention Christopher but of course I don't have a good trail, yet. Thanks for your help, Michelle Hamel Ok, as I was typing this my mail man just delivered my grandmother's birth certificate and it residence of Parents Stoney Creek and Parents are John C. Burket and Sarah J. Burket, it has my grandmother's Birth date right but wrong middle Initial. I have to call the court house to see if they made a typo error. I have my Grandmother's marriage license also and they have John Burket and Sarah Burket, the birth record I was hoping it would have shown Sarah J. maiden name but it didn't. As I written before I decend from John Cyrus or John L.C. Burket, my aunt said he went by Cyrus. I'm busy piecing together with the help of several people I've came across on line. Just my grandmother's siblings are a challenge let alone the prior generation, which it seems like I have read so much about. I'm interested in finding Church documents, cemetery documents, whatever anyone has in the family and willing to share what I have found too. Do you have a pedegree line for Isreal? I can't seem to piece all the postings together for them to make much sense, it appears people have 10 children per one posting and someone else list 4 so it looks like they are picking up maybe neices and nephews in the mix. Can you e-mail me Isreal's line or is there a current web site? I tried one I found in a posting but it didn't work. Maybe thru some Church records but I don't know where to start. I believe the Sarah Barnhart was a decendent of George Barnhart and a Catherine Hershberger Today I found out that Jacob Barnhart, Sarah's brother, is buried in Graef's Lutheran Cemetary. So I thought I would start with all the Lutheran Church's first. Maybe John and Sarah where married in a Lutheran Church???? John's Cyrus's Parents are????????????????????????? According to other people's message boards, John Cyrus was born in StoneyCreek approx. 1833 maybe 1828., I don't have a paper trail to prove this. What county would Stoney Creek have been in? Thanks for your time, Michelle Burket-Prato
John Cyrus Burket (Farmer) and Louisa were married about 1865 in of Allegheny Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania. Louisa was born in 1848. 1870 Census Allegheny Township, Somerset, Pa image 29 ancestry She died between 1869 and 1874. Last child born 1869 and then husband remarries in 1874. Did she die? Are Sarah and Louisa one and the same? Sarah Louisa? Because on the 1900 census Sarah says she has given birth to 12 children and 10 are still alive. If you count the children of Sarah and Louisa it all pans out. Weird. John Cyrus Burket (Farmer) and Louisa had the following children: 215 | i. | Jessie Burket was born in 1866 in of Allegheny Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania. 1870 Census Allegheny Township, Somerset, Pa image 29 ancestry Is Jessie a nick name for Salome? I think Jessie and Salome are the same person. Same age if the 1870 and 1880 census are accurate. So Jessie Salome would be the daughter of John Cyrus and his first wife Louisa who must have died in child birth or something with Walter. Possibly twins? No. Never appearing in same place twice. Check this.

John Cyrus Burket (Farmer) and Sarah Barnhart were married about 1874 in of Allegheny Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania. 1874? 1900 census says married 26 years but that would put her as a second wife and mean that child Myra was born soon after or just before to a previous deceased wife. When did I first find Sara married to John C.? I think it was the 1880 census and they were in Allegheny. So that makes sense, that is why I have Sarah and not the first wife. Sarah Barnhart was born on 24 March 1850 in of Shade Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania. Birth date from Michelle Hamel. <michellehamel821@hotmail.com> Age 26 on the 1880 image 6 of 29--says new baltimore but original says Allegheny.
