Fourth Generation
120. John Samuel
Burket (Farmer) was born on 21 Mar 1822 in White River, Randolph, Indiana.
White River where he was said to have been born WAS just that, a River. I have
yet to find a town with that name. It was probably somewhere near Winchester
He was taxed in 1842 in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois Description:
A weakness of the Illinois State census of 1842 is the lack of information regarding
residents surrounding Nauvoo along the Mississippi River. The records in this
database can help reconstruct a list of residents in the area. Taken from microfilm
records held by the Family History Library in Salt Lake, it lists property owners
in Hancock County in August of 1842. Each record provides the individual's name,
coordinate location of property, and the page of the original record. For researchers
of ancestors of western Illinois, this can be a helpful guide to very detailed
information. Extended Description: Records in this database were taken
from Film # 007,706 in the Family History Library, 5th Item, pp.163-236. The
tax list was compiled 20th of August, 1842.

I wonder if he returned to Missouri due to Polygamy persecution in Utah? When
did they pass the law? Looks like 1862. So perhaps this is why he came back?

"Most of the first farms and settlers in the early 1800's were necessarily
locatd on the Ohio, Wabash, Whitewater or White rivers or near the streams and
creeks from which the rivers originated." (The Red Book)
new as of September 2007--from the journal of Jane Oldham Duke Burket's brother,
Jonathan Oldham Duke:
Aug 19, 1855--Attended meeting 2 and the lesser Priesthood and council meeting
in the evening. Requested E. M. Greene to draw up a subsription paper for to
get signers to get a cow for Bro. Keyes. He circulated it and got $44 dollars
I took the paper and got $20 more.
I had a Bishops [Vol 2 page 21] <img/jod/v2p21.jpg> trial at my
house, a charge against S. Burket.
This is Samuel Burket. He settled in Provo.
The Samuel comes from Beverly Wilmoth, descendant.
My Name is Danita Kaye Burkett and I am a descendent of George Burkett,
Sr., and Catherine Swoveland. I would be most interested in sharing some
information and perhaps photographs that might be of interest to you.
John Burkett Sr. my great-great grandfather, (son of George Jr.) was a
mormon and went to Utah from Council Bluffs. He had two wives--Jane Oldham
Duke and Mary Ann Thompson. My great-grandfather John D. (John Duke) was
born to Jane in 1848 in Iowa. His little brother was James Carlos Burkett.
(You have him listed as "Carlos" but his name was James Carlos) My
father,
Don James Carlos Burkett was named after him. There was also a sister born
to John Sr. and Jane Oldham Duke in Iowa in 1852. Her name was Sarah E.
John Burkett Sr. along with his two wives Jane and Mary Ann Thompson moved
to Provo and can be found there on the 1860 census. (You will note the
census has James Carlos listed as Jas C). John Sr. and Mary Ann had several
children in Utah territory and they are listed on the census as well.
John Sr. and Jane's two oldest sons, John Duke and James Carlos left Utah.
James moved to Missouri and married Barbara Ann Dodson on July 5, 1874.
Meanwhile John Duke moved to Oklahoma Territory and married a full-blooded
Chickasaw Indian. (Prior to the "Land Run of 1889" no one was allowed
to
live in Indian Territory unless they had permission of the Indians or were
married to an Indian. The U.S. Calvary arrested violators...) John Duke
Burkett had permission and started a ranch. His brother James Carlos came
and joined him (after his marriage to Barbara in Missouri). John Duke
Burkett and his Chickasaw wife had my grandfather Frank Marion Burkett, born
in Paoli, Oklahoma in 1882. I do not know the name of John Duke Burkett's
wife, my great-grandmother. She died when my grandfather was only four.
James Carlos Burkett was able to aquire the Burkett Farm in Oklahoma during
the great Land Run of 1889. John Duke Burkett did not feel that he was able
to raise his only son Frank without a mother in Indian country so he took
Frank to the Farm of James Carlos and Barbara Burkett and they raised him.
John D. Burkett died young as well.
James Carlos (everyone called him Jim or J.C.) Burkett, son of the good mormon
John Samuel Burkett - was known far and wide in Oklahoma as being an
honest and God-fearing man. His children were all Christians and good
people. They became teachers and Educators and the Burkett Library at the
University of Oklahoma in Norman is named after Jesse Burkett.
They were all musical and loved hymn singing.
I have very old photographs of Great Uncle Jim (James Carlos Burkett) and
his wife Barbara Dodson Burkett. Also the other mormon Burkett's...
great-great uncle Noah and aunt Kate.
I am no genealogist but I do have some wonderful family records. My
paternal side is this:
Danita Kay Burkett (12/8/59)
Don James Carlos Burkett (8/23/25 - 9/5/96)
Frank Marion Burkett (11/02/1882) Paoli, OK
John Duke Burkett (1848) Iowa
John Samuel Burkett (3/21/1822)
George Burkett, Jr. (10/18/1788)
George Burkett, Sr. (1770 in Germany?)
Israel Burkett
Thank you. Please write back if you know how I might find out more
information about John Duke Burkett and his Chickasaw Indian wife.
Sincerely,
Danita
John Samuel Burket (Farmer) and Mary Ann THOMPSON were married on 3 Dec 1855
in Provo, Utah, Utah.168
This is interesting since Mary Ann was apparently living with John and his first
wife on the 1850 census. Mary Ann THOMPSON (daughter
of George Thompson and Jane Goldthorpe) was born in 1838 of Hull, Yorkshire,
England. Age 22 on 1860 in Provo, born England
are the younger children hers?
Eleanor, Martha, George W. and Elisabeth? born England according to 1900 census
John Samuel Burket (Farmer) and Mary Ann THOMPSON had the following children:
228 | i. | Elisabeth A. Burket was born in Mar 1860
in Provo, Utah, Utah Territory. | +229 | ii. | Noah

John
Samuel Burket (Farmer) and Jane Oldham Duke were married about 1847.
Jane Oldham Duke (daughter of James Duke and Mary
Oldham) was born on 5 Nov 1817 in Derby, Derbyshire, England.125,170,171 She was baptized on 4 Jul 1839 in Albany, New York.
Source is journal of Jonathan Oldham Duke. See his notes. She moved to Nauvoo,
Hancock, Illinois on 30 Apr 1840 From her brother's journal:
On April 30, 1840, I with my family which consisted of my wife and four children
and my two sisters Anne and Jane Duke started to Commerce. We proceeded
on the Erie Canal to Buffalo where we took our passage on board the steamboat
New England and landed in Chicago about the middle of May.
Here I worked at my trade for two months and then hired a team to take us to
Nauvoo which was then called Commerce. I obtained a lot and built a house where
I have had plenty of work at my trade. Here I joined the Elders Quorum and remained
a member of that body four years. At the October conferance I joined the Seventies
and was attached to the eleventh quorum on the day of its organization, which
was I believe, the eighth of the month.
She received her patriarchal blessing on 7 Nov 1841172 Was this for Jane or her mother? Her mother was an
oldham, possibly also Jane. Look at the cd again for clues. The history of her
brother says she died on 1848 at one point, but then later it is clarified it
is not Jane Burket who died but Ann who died leaving her oldest son to be raised
by Jonathon and family. She died age 37 after a long illness and her son's name
was James. She died 2 January 1845.
Have a Jane Burkett having done baptisms in Nauvoo Temple for:
