Second Generation
2. Peter (Schwabeland)
Swoveland Farmer2
was born about 1748 in Wuerttenberg, Germany.3,4 I'm thinking maybe Peter was married
when he came over. Newly married. This because if a recent record I found on
the IGI that says a Magdalena Bausser married a Swoveland around 1772. The Baussers
were in York County early. Maybe he married her when they first got to York
in 1774 or 5. At any rate, Peter was definitely the oldest. I am sure he took
care of the others in coming over. He immigrated on 30 Sep 1774 to Philadelphia,
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.5
List 320c
Peter Schwabeland, with brothers Ludwig and Christian.
They came on ship UNION 30 September 1774 with captain Andrew Bryson.
According to 'The Source' Oaths of Alliegance to the king of Great Britain were
signed by all male immigrants over 16. The first few names on the list may be
church leaders from the native village. After oaths were taken, the passengers
returned to the ship to negotiate terms of service. The newspaper becomes the
principal public document at this point since announcements of new arrivals to
be sold were printed in each issue, with dates of auction. After negotiations
were over, the results were also printed in the newspapers. He was taxed in
1782 in Bedford Township, Bedford, Pennsylvania6
He owned 100 Acres in Bedford Township in 1785 in , Bedford, Pennsylvania.7 He appeared in the census in 1790

Listed as Peter Swob

If this is Peter Schwabeland then the ages on the Mennonite church records are
a little off..... It could still be him. Not many had a family with this equal
amount of boys and girls. Plus, this is the only Swob on the census in the county
and he does not appear again on the 1800 or the 1810.
He was living in 1790 in St Clair Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania.9 of 03602 SWOPELAND, PETER GRANTOR

This is right before he dies....well, he dies sometime before 1814 and this is
filed 1811. I need to get the deed, however. NOt clear. What is a deed poll
from Henry Crosson? What is a deed poll?
Bedford Township....Dunnings Creek. VERY close to Israel's land. Did Peter
buy it from Israel? (son in law, so it isn't on the records...passed down)
Did Israel move to Somerset around the same time Peter shows up here? WHERE
IS MORIS'S COVE MOUNTAIN? Check the maps!!!!

Grantee is John Rickel. I have copy in my possession sent to me by Chyrl Wimer.
Peter is of St. Clair Township.
'a certain tract of one hundred acres of land situated on the wathers of Dunning
Creek adjoining the lands of the Reverand Doctor William Smith and Morrison's
Cove Mountain in the Township and County of Bedford.' Peter had received it
from Henry Crosson in 1790.
So, he is living in Saint Clair and selling land in Bedford Township that he
has had since 1790. Original warrant 1786 to Henry Crosson. Interesting. These
early lands of Peter are probably next door to Israel's original Bedford Township
lands and Georges land which was just 2 miles from Bedford fort. George was
Peter's brother in law.
Another thought is how the Smiths in Taneytown were all Doctors and now I find
that this Smith next to Peter Swoveland is indeed a DOCTOR...and a REVEREND which
is also interesting as I found some smiths in Taneytown who were in the ministry
and who's names matched some of our family names. One never knows!!!
Morrison's Cove Mountain. Where is it?
Morrison's Cove is often mentioned as a landmark in early wills and records of
importance. It is a fertile valley eight miles wide and 12 miles long, and extends
into present Blair and Centre Counties. Wills Creek Valley and Friend's Cove
are also in this section of the state and were well known to the early settlers.

Peter shows up on the 1779 Tax list for Bedford Township, Bedford County
as a farmer with one horse. Then again in 1784 census with a horse three
cattle, worth $100 with 100 acres warrant and charged 50 cents tax.
Peter and all his children are on the IGI. Their work was sent in by a
woman whos source is Mennonite church Records.
There is a James on the tax lists in 1808 in Greenfield township with 126 acres
and worth $444 dollars. This is an ESTABLISHED farm. Even Peter's son Ludwig
didn't own any land at age 26. So this James is quite likely a younger brother
of the original 3 brothers and catherine. Is he ANYWHERE else? Maybe it is
a mistake. But still, it is so early.
What about the James Swoveland who is on the tax lists in Greenfield township
in 1808 with property valued at $444? Who is that? Maybe it is John...one of
them, if there is more than one.
Peter (Schwabeland) Swoveland Farmer and Magdalena (Molly) Bausser (Bowser)
were married about 1777.14
There is a Magdalena Bausser who married a Swoveland on the IGI, and the Baussers
are from YORK. The marriage supposedly took place about 1772. It was more likely
1777. On my 1999 trip to SLC I found that John Bausser was on the 1772 tax lists
in Bedford Township with Israel. This means that Magdalena was there also in
1772 and yet Stophel was a single freeman until after the war and then some.
(about 1777) The Bausser family that gave the york information on the IGI must
have been descendants of a brother who remained in the york area...who knows.
Magdalena (Molly) Bausser (Bowser)15,16,17,18 (daughter
of John Henry Bausser and Eva Marie Schellenberg) was born about 1760 in York?
(of Bedford Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. from IGI Film

Some family records have her as Molena Bowser! In my research I have discovered
that it is not an uncommon varition ofthe name Magdelena--especially in the German
communities. So, I am OK with this spelling.
There is still a problem here. I put our Magdalena as a child of John Bausser
I because II wasn't born, supposedly until 1770. UGH. Not sure if John I is
even old enough to be father, but probably is. Magdalena was probably a good
10 years younger than Peter.
OK, the gedcom I downloaded was probably right. Madlena is different than Magdalena.
Madlena is the child of John, the brother of Magdalena. That is why my Mary
Magdalena is still alive and is the administrator of her husband's will in 1814.
A Madlena is listed on her father's unrecorded will (97.871 P28h) in Bedford
County as have been deceased. John wills to the 'children of my deceased daughter
Madlena Swoeland...' The will is dated 3 August 1808 and probated in 1809.
Peter dies in 1814. And, Mary is listed.
Mary is name listed on Bedford County Archives. Most likely there is no conflict
here and it was simply Mary Magdalena Bausser.
12 May 1814 letters of administration to Mary Swoveland and Samuel Blackburn,
estate of Peter Swoveland, des'd, St. Clair Township. Sureties: George Bowser
and Mattias Otto.
We now know George is a nephew to Mary. I don't know, there is something still
fishy here. George isn't old enough to do the suritie thing. Is there another
George?
Bowser was Magdalena's maiden name. Sometimes in the records she is Mary?,
Sometimes Magdalena, sometimes Molly and sometimes Modlena.
Should have Photocopied these; found this record in Library in SLC in
Early Church file. There was a card there for a Nauvoo baptism. Card
Number A-196. George Burkett was baptised for his sister, Sarah. (record
shows he was a brother)----also aunt and uncle, Peter and Molly Swoveland.
I have since learned that Molly is a nick name for the German Magdalena (1997)
A Magdalena Bausser of York County, Pa. married a Swoveland in about 1772 or
at least is listed as 1772 on source which is family submitted IGI. Christian
was a single freeman until the late 1780's, Ludwig only had 2 kids by 1790.
Peter is the only one who has MANY kids, the first born about 1778. HUM. I'll
bet!!
A Magdalena Bausser (Bowser) is mentioned as a daughter in the will of John Bowser
of Bedford Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania as having married a Swoveland.
Got to be Peter.
George Junior mentions his Aunt and Uncle Peter and Molly Swoveland. MOLLY!
this is the same interpretation that my distant cousin had on her web page (Hartman

This is a BIG Bowser town! It is no wonder that Peter lived in St. Clair! He
moved there to be close to Magdalena's family who were all from St. Clair.
