Meeting Minutes

Feb 26, 2000, IOOF Hall, Olympia, WA

1. Meeting called to order promptly at 1100 hrs by Commander Fleck followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Directly thereafter, a sympathy card was circulated for Brother Ken Leavens, whose wife had recently passed on.

2. Members present: Brothers James Brown, William Harvey, Jeff Henningfield, John Persinger, Darrell Holt, Anthony Lucero, Michael Cook, Wes Koentz, Steven Fenton, Lee Morgan, Milton Vaught, Rod Fleck, Ken Richmond, Theodore Kunjara

Guests Present: Frank Starr III, Michael Seguin

3. Minutes of last meeting were approved as written.

4. Treasurer’s report: Checking ($440.27) 4 checks outstanding Savings1($1,012.98) Savings2($183.52)

5. Membership: 50 total, 4 of them life members

6. Harley Crain was unanimously appointed to the Camp Council to replace Wes Koentz.

7. Steven Fenton was unanimously appointed the new Camp Secretary in light of Jeff Henningfield’s pending departure.

8. Ken Richmond discussed the upcoming fund raising venture, i.e. a SUVCW membership license plate. A design was adopted, will be sent to the Administrative Council for approval at their meeting in March. Ken also discussed the resurrection of the Camp’s Eagle Scout recognition program, displaying much improved certificates. Coordination will be made with local Boy Scout Councils to identify eligible recipients. John Persinger offered to present certificates to new Eagle scouts in his re-enactor’s uniform.

9. The May 27 re-dedication of LT Vernon Byron Mathew’s grave in Vancouver was discussed. Several items are still in the works and will be worked through by Rod Fleck and Ken Richmond.

10. Lee Morgan presented a newspaper article about Jesse T. Barrick, a Civil War Veteran and Medal of Honor winner. Mr. Barrick was recently re-interred in Tahoma National Cemetery after laying at rest in an unmarked grave in Pasco for 75 years. A formal ceremony to mark the occasion will be held this summer with Camp #1 participation and attendance.

11. Darrell Holt inquired about membership for his uncle, a True Son, now living in Missouri. Ken Richmond will put him in contact with the National True Son/Daughter Coordinator.

12. Ken Richmond pointed out that several members had recently received nametags that misspelled Gov. Isaac Steven’s name. Steps will be taken to obtain replacement tags. He also spoke about upcoming events.

13. Rod Fleck opened discussion to coordinate a wreath-laying ceremony at the final resting place of Gov. Isaac Stevens. The idea was unanimously endorsed with Commander Fleck to see it through. During this discussion, Ken Richmond also noted that there are two other graves of Civil War generals in the state that deserve similar honors. He will locate their final resting places and further the discussion at the April meeting.

14. The program was coordinated by Anthony Lucero and given by Frank Starr (below left), the Ordnance Sgt in Brother Lucero's re-enactment unit. Mr. Starr, a longtime member of the North South Skirmisher's Association,  presented an enthralling history of Civil War arsenals, domestic and foreign longarms and ammunition from the early 1800s through the end of the war. He is clearly a subject matter expert on Civil War rifles and accoutrements. The presentation was capped off by Michael Seguin's (below right) demonstration of the 9 step loading sequence for the Enfield rifle. Darrell Holt also spoke of a Civil War sword he inherited from his late uncle and his unselfish efforts to preserve this small piece of history.
