Steps to a healthy Computer:
PASSWORDS Always use a password whenever possible. Passwords are used for a reason. If you are running Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7, you should create a password now. If you do not use one, internet attackers can have full control of your system to use for their (malicious) purposes. Also, make sure you change the administration password for your high-speed network router if you use one. This keeps attackers out of your private network. |
VIRUS PROTECTION Make sure you use an Anti-Virus program and make sure it is Fully Updated. If it is not up-to-date, it will not protect you from the latest and most deadly viruses. Up-to-date virus protection is probably the number one step in keeping your computer healthy. Because Anti-Virus programs run in the background, you should only install ONE AV program on your computer. If you install more than one you will likely have problems. |
WINDOWS CRITICAL UPDATES Turn on your 'Automatic Updates' in the Control Panel window. If you manually update, make sure you check for new updates at least once a week. This helps patch any security risks that have recently been discovered. You only need to download and install the 'Critical Updates'- NOT the 'recommended updates'. |
FIREWALL Install a Router with a Firewall to create a private network. This keeps you safe from direct online attacks. A router with NAT (Network Address Translation) will give your computer a private Network IP Address. If you don't know what that means, don't worry. It essentially builds a 'fence' around your 'house' (computer) that traffic on the 'street' cannot see. In other words, you are invisible to the internet, but you can visit the internet anytime you want... |
ADWARE / SPYWARE PROTECTION Adware & Spyware turn a healthy computer into a time machine that just 'sits & spins' -thus, wasting your time. Installing new programs, visiting certain websites, and opening e-mail attachments can introduce new Spyware files into your system. These files gather information about you and where you go, and report back to pinpoint advertisement tailored for you. Another common effect from Spyware can be a hijacking attack on your Internet Browser. Using a good Adware and Spyware program will keep your system clean. There are several FREE programs available. Check out www.download.com , and search for Adware and Spyware. At the very least, delete your 'Cookies' and 'Temporary Internet Files' on a weekly basis. This is where a lot of the malware files are stored. |
Try to perform a weekly
maintenance schedule.
Your computer will love you for it. If you follow all
of these steps and watch where you go online,
your computer should live a long, healthy life :)
