The highlight of the airshow season for me has got to be the San Francisco FleetWeek show. There's no where else that combines spectacular world class scenery with high speed jets, jaw dropping aerobatic performances, helicopter rescue swimmers, and the awe inspiring performances of the Blue Angels!
Weather plays an important part in determining how good an airshow can be, and that's especially the case in San Francisco. Even though Weather forecast called for partly cloudy to sunny skies for the air show days, fog has always been a wild card. I'm sure more than a few people were stressing out Sunday, as the Golden Gate bridge was completely obscured by a thick blanket of fog even as late at 11:30am! (Remember, the exact conditions forced the cancellation of one of last years' Blues performance partway through). However, conditions gradually improved so that by 3pm, the fog had completely lifted from around the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Blues could fly their normal high show!
This year, I got permission to be aboard the USCGC Sockeye for the Saturday show. We were stationed on the middle western edge of the show box, where we got some unique views of the various performers, and amazingly close up shots of the sneak pass run start. Since we were out on the bay early, we also got a prime view of the parade of ships as they sailed under the GGB.
As usual, I have way too many pictures. I've created separate category pages for easier loading, and even broke up the many Blue Angels pictures based on their performance dates. I had a great time at this year's Fleetweek, and hope you enjoy the pictures! Nikon D300 w/ 150-500mm Sigma OS lens, D200 w/ 18-105mm VR lens - Bernard Zee
Special thanks to the Airshow Network, and the USCG for allowing me the opportunity to get these great shots!
