...Spaghetti-like Contrails

airplanes and spaghetti-like contrails and explosions
this morning i awoke from a nightmare

a little later than usual for a weekday
but a little early for a saturday
which fortunately it was

kitty was snoozing at the foot of our bed
she sensed i was awake and tip-toed up between us
to nuzzle me
i petted her head and she licked my hand
strangely, i was in a good mood
better than i've felt in quite a while
i got up and looked out the window
despite last night's forecast of a gloomy start
fog burning off to reveal a high overcast
it was not that way at all
the sun was shining bright
illuminating the yellow and red leaves in the backyard
contrasted against the deep blue sky
my soulmate stirred at my motion
i said she should look out the window
i said today is the day we go to the mountain village
after the usual ritual
showers and coffees and eggs et al.
and kitty's baleful looks
we were off on the road
to go leaf peeping
as we ventured west and north
crossing borders
towns in the midst of their traditional celebrations
the intensity of the trees' color increased
and reminders of how truly scenic it is all around us
soon the countryside was aflame in fall color
the mountain village was lovely in its simple beauty
a main street in an idyllic setting
a brief repast
a little browsing
some crafts to admire but not buy
not wanting to return the same way we came
we headed home on a different path
and the leaves were even more intense
as though their colors may have been improving
as the day progressed
we came upon a sign
of a park along the road
so we ventured off our path
a stroll in the forest
around a silver pond
the leaves and the crickets
the occasional people passing
a quick hello as they walk by
and we're alone again
to marvel at it all
kaleidoscope reflections
on the water
on life
the sky blue and clear
and all seems clear
so obvious
just a trail in the forest
back in the car
the ride back was quick
and painless
kitty was waiting at the door
i petted her head
and she purred a tad
and rubbed her chin on my ankle
all was well with the world
