Pike Co. and Floyd Co., Kentucky Photos - updated 21 Nov 2009

Below we have posted photos some of the over 3,500 indexed individuals from the collection of The Tackett Family Assn. who have roots in Pike & Floyd Co., Kentucky. The photos in this collection contain many originals, but most are copies of originals that we have collected over the past 40 years, and a few are scanned images found with printed church obits, newspaper obits & books. Included are hundreds of headstone photos, photos of area churches, and other prints that may be of historical interest. It is our intent to donate this collection to Special Collections, Allara Library, Pikeville College, Pike Co., KY. We particularly want to acknowledge the contributions to this collection by Juble Tackett of Pikeville and the late Hassell Tackett, also of Pikeville. ©The photos shown on these pages are the property of The Tackett Family Assn. and are for sharing with your family, and for your own personal use - but are not to be transmitted to other individuals verbatim electronically, on other Internet websites, or via print media; nor are these images to be transmitted for the use of sectarian or commercial organizations, except with the express permission of The Tackett Family Assn. Actual photographs of most of these are available for purchase. For details see our webpage, The Tackett Bookstore.

©Photo #C1987.1.2&3. This is of the original headstone for "Indian Creek"Solomon Osborne, one of the earliest settlers in the Indian Creek area of Pike Co., KY. At the time this was taken by Jim W. Tackitt in 1987, the stone was at the home of the late Evert Fred Johnson of Etty, Pike Co., KY. This stone was taken from the W.F. Tackett Cemetery where Solomon Osborne isburied close to Wm. Tackitt Sr., 1779-1851. This original stone appeared on the W. F. Tackett Cemetery [aka The Frank Tackett Cem.] sometime before the 1991 Tackett Reunion and was standing against the tree near the Wm. Tackitt Sr. Memorial Stone. In 1995 a replacement Memorial Stone was placed in this location and the original stone was missing. The replacement stone, giving names of the children, does have some minor errors. We do not know who now has the original stone [Aug 1995].

This photo, on the left, has been enhanced so the name & dates can be seen clearly. True photos of the original can be ordered from Jim W. Tackitt.

To see the location where the W.F. Tackett Cem. is located, see our map on the Tackett Assn. page, "Tackett Reunion." This cemetery was previously known as "The Willard Tackitt Cem., and, we have been told, that before that, it was "The Richard Hall Cem.," Richard being the husband of old Wm. Tackitt Sr.'s dau., Sarah Tackitt Hall, 1813-1904.

Down the road a bit from the W.F. Tackett Cem., noted above, is what is now called The Amil Little Memorial Cemetery. It is on the hill just off the left side of Long Fork Road by the old Hartley, KY P.O. The photo to the left is an Old Reg. Baptist funeral service held on this cemetery sometime in the 1950's. Folks shown have not been identified. [From the collection of the late Amil & Elsie Tackett Little, courtesy of Sue Little Adams of Long Fork Rd.]

This cemetery, like most old cemeteries in the area, has gone thru numerous name changes. The earliest was "The Wm. 'Buck' Tackitt Cem.," [for Wm. Tackitt Jr., 1809-1894], then "The Neal Little Cem.," and now named for Cornelius Little's son, Amil Little, 1906-1907.

Also from the collection of the late Amil & Elsie Tackett Little, is this 1930 era photo of some coal miners who probably walked over the hills to the mines at Weeksbury. The only one we have identified is Amil Little, 2nd from the right holding the stick.

Photo #HAS.02.43 - A good shot of Caleb Johnson, b c Oct 1868 (Census), being a son of Elisha "Ground Hog" Johnson & Marilda Mullins. Caleb was marr. to Lourena Johnson, dau. of David Johnson & Hulda J. Tackitt. This photo, taken around 1915, is from an original print in The Hassell Tackett Collection.

Elder George Walter Robinson, son of Samuel & Matilda Hopkins Robinson, of Millard/Sutton [aka Greasy Creek Junction], Pike Co., KY, was a member of The Greasy Creek Old Reg. Baptist Church. He was the Clerk of the Greasy Creek Church from about 1903 thru 1913. He also appears in the Minutes as an ordained minister from 1920-1930. He does not appear after that date. Unfortunately no church obit was printed for him, nor is there any mention I could find of his death in the Minutes.. This photo is from an original in the James G. & Dorcas Hobbs Collection, donated to The Tackett Family Assn.

Identification of this photo courtesy of Donna Hardin Bourne, Great Great # Neice of Matilda Hopkins. Sorry, we have no address for Ms. Bourne.

Photo #C91.01.41. - George Washington "Wash" Burke, 1867-1927, son of Nathaniel & Gincie Johnson Burke, and his wife, Rebecca Ann Johnson, 1876-1950, dau. of Payne "Doc" & Lavina M. Fleming Johnson, are bur. on the old Payne Johnson Cem. at Speight, Pike Co., KY.

This photo, taken by Jim W. Tackitt, July 1991, is of the joint headstone for George & Rebecca - taken at night. [Whew! Now that's no place most of us would want to be caught on a dark night!] Under the stones we read "Father's gone home to die no more." / "Mother's gone home at rest." Notice that their photos have been encapsulated on the stone and that it rests inside a "grave house." [We also have close-ups of these photos.]
