Crum Website: Referred by: From a Friend From: Lexington KY Time: 2000-04-11 01:13:02 Comments: My Tackett family is from Floyd and Pike counties [Kentucky]. I wonder what the draw was to have so many Tacketts stay in the mountains. Not all of my family were in the coal mines. Many were farmers. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Reply by Jim W. Tackitt. Much could be written on this subject, but in brief, coal mining is a relative new experience in the area. Prior to 1880, or even 1900, there was very little mining. Most of the mineral (coal) rights were bought by large out-of-state corporations for "peanuts" after 1880. At that time most folks were farmers. There is now virtually no farming or livestock raising left in the area, although most of the older folks will have large gardens and still manage to put away a good share of their gardens for later use. After the 1920's thru the 1940's, there was really a large migration out of the area. An old saying in the area is that "If it were not for Kentuckians, there wouldn't be an Ohio." |

She must have married him before 1913 because that was when she married my grandfather Alexander Knipp. Malissa had two daughters by Tackett, Lottie and Jinny. Thank you, Alice . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Reply from Jim W. Tackitt: A little complex query to go into here, but MALISSA J. ABRAMS, b c1890, was marr. to WILLIAM E. The 1910 Carter Co., KY Census lists this family with two children: Jennie T. and Ralph Tackett. . . . . . . . . Not enough basic data there to yet make a guess as to who your MARTHA J. TACKETT was. Perhaps she was a widow/divorcee of a Tackett?? Now, WILLIAM E. TACKETT had a half-sister named MARTHA of about the same age, but her middle names were Ann Ellen. |

Nancy Burdine, their daughter was Martha Tackett. I estimate they would have been born abt. 1820-1830. Can anybody help? Thanx, Doug. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Reply from Jim W. Tackitt: Doug is referring to Abner H. Tackitt, 1803-1889, [of KY, Fayette Co., AL and Monroe/Lee Co., MS], for whom we have done extensive research. Unfortunately, one researcher has given an unsubstantiated claim that Abner had a wife named NANCY [or Sarah] BURDINE - and this undocumented claim has made itís way into the also otherwise erroneous lineages found in the LDS, Ancestry & Family Tree Maker files. Although we have evidence for two wives for Abner H. Tackitt, there is no evidence that such a person as NANCY J. BURDINE ever existed, and there is some doubt that MARTHA TACKETT was a blood dau. of ABNER H. TACKITT. This is one of those claims that have sent many on a "wild goose chase." |

D. Damron From: Kentucky - Weeksbury, Lexington, now Prestonsburg Time: 1999-11-28 17:46:09 Comments: Been a while since I communicated. Moved a lot there for a few years and fell out of touch. Been in Floyd Co. for a few years now. Ran for a judgeship in November, but lost. Saw Danny Tackett while on the campaign trail and talking to him reminded me of the rewards of genealogy. I decided, given the uncertainty of the future, I had better get back into this while I'm living here in eastern Kentucky - a residency that may not last forever in light of the economy here. I am hoping to see (first hand)and copy some of the important public records available here, as my work does frequently take me to surrounding counties (especially Pike). Just bought Family Tree Maker a few days ago and have thoroughly enjoyed entering info and photos over Thanksgiving weekend. I have been especially impressed with the improvement in quality I have been able to achieve in old photos I have scanned in, using PhotoDeluxe. I was wondering, has any consideration been given to scanning in photos and/or old issues of the Tackett Family Journal and selling CDs of this to members? Well, I'll end my ramblings now - really just meant to say I'm glad to see such an excellent website. |

(Tackett) Hayes From: Vincent, Ohio Time: 1999-10-13 02:32:07 Comments: Jesse Whitman Tackett was a member several years ago. I am researching my father's branch now and thought I would see if the Tackett Family Association was still around, and if they had gone "global". I'm so pleased. I haven't found our lineage back as far as 1700 yet, I may need help with some connections. Dad's cousin Kim Tackett Fuller has been doing the bulk of research on this branch but she doesn't use a computer, so I thought I'd speed things up a little. I would be interested in attending the Tackett family reunion in 2000 if I can find it and get off work then. Our branch of the Tacketts has come to a screeching halt unless my daughter changes her name and gets a future spouse to do the same. Dad had only daughters and sisters. So I am trying to salvage what I can of the family "name" Any tips or directions would be very helpful and greatly appreciated.. . . . . . . . . . . Reply from Jim W. Tackitt: This is a family line on which the Tackett Family Assn. has extensive documentation and on which several descendants have enrolled over the years. It is our "educated assumption" that WILLIAM L. TACKETT, b c1807, was a grandson of CHRISTOPHER TACKETT, who died in 1790 with unnamed children as heirs. |

Sarah was born 1839, and reportedly was a daughter of ?Rainwater, who was Cherokee. Sarah and Adam settled in Lawrence Co., OH, and my g-father was born in 1877, Harrison Elmer Christian. Any info is appreciated. Thanks.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Reply from Jim W. Tackitt: Yvonne: There really is not enough here to identify this Sarah Ann Tackett. I recommend that folks check our webpage on "Tackett Queries" which will give some hints on how to write a query that may get results. In the case of this family, I really would like to see included: (1) The county/state where this family came from, (2) The county/state where they were married, and (3) very important, the evidence which identifies Sarah Ann as a TACKETT. But, in general, the early Lawrence Co., OH Tacketts seem to have their origins in old Kanawha Co., VA, old Floyd Co., KY or Lee Co., VA. I have never seen/heard any reference to a TACKETT in this area who had proven AmerIndian ancestry. |

Her father was Louis Tackett and mother was Amaryllis Stradford. Mary Catherine married Reuben Duncan.. . . . . . . . . . . . Mr. Dyer: Thank you for writing. Your Mary Catherine Tackett [others give it as Mary Katherine], was one of the several children of Rev. Lewis Tackitt, 1838-1876, and Amarilla Stradford (c1835/37-1921), of Gasconade Co., MO. Amarilla marr/2 to John Lively [see 1880 Phelps Co., MO Census]. I haven't seen her name as "Amaryllis," but that sure is a pretty name. Lewis was a Civil War veteran with Co. M, 5th Reg't, Iowa Cavalary (Union). The ancestry of this Lewis Tackitt has yet to be proven, but we have placed him within the family of Phillip Jackson Tackitt and his apparent 2nd wife, Rachel. The line of JAMES is: Lewis Thomas, Thomas, c1796/1806-1862, perhaps a son of Lewis & Susannah Sumpter Tackett. The line of DELILAH is: Elijah T., Robert, 1815-1880, perhaps a son of George. Both JAMES and DELILAH also have a 2nd Tackett line thru their mothers. I have some pages from an original ledger of their son, LEWIS V. Her father was Thomas Baylus Tackett, b June 1, 1873, d July 25, 1964 and was married to Rebecca Anne Smith, b March 31, 1877. I remember my grandfather telling me that he was born in Kentucky. My grandfathers parents both had the same last name. His father was John Felix Tackett, his mother was Mildred Tackett. My mother tells me they were not related. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Reply from Jim W. Tackitt: Thanks for writing. The parents of your grandfather, Bayless Thomas Tackett, [the name he gave me], were "double cousins." His parents, John Felix Tackett and Mildred Melitta Tackett, were the grandchildren of WILLIAM TACKETT III, 1782-1852, of Bath Co., KY. AND, in addition, Mildred Melitta Tackett was a dau. of Baylis C. Tackett, son of William Tackett III , AND of Mildred "Milly" Tackett, dau of BAYLISS TACKETT, 1784-1870, the brother of the aforementioned WILLIAM TACKETT III. Confused? Well, it was really not uncommon for Tacketts to marry each other, as was common in many of the old Kentucky families. We have some members who have as many as EIGHT Tackett lines - you only have three [(:] . . . . . . Numerous references to these folks can be found on our website under "Descriptive Table of Contents." - AND we have several ORIGINAL documents on the family dating back to the mid 1800's. |

C. Alexander Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Soddy Daisy, TN Time: 1999-01-23 17:15:18 Comments: I have a 15 year old grandson, Brandon Nicholas Tackett. His mother, Belinda gail, was married to Bruce Wayne Tackett, of Pikeville, KY. My Grandson has never seen his father or even a picture of him. Bruce and Brandon have never met. Brandon feels like he has no identity, since he is the only Tacket around. I do know that Bruce had a previous family in the Pikeville area. He lived in Chattanooga, TN in 1982. He and my daughter moved to Chicago where his mother lived. A divorce evolved and a child was born. I promised Brandon when he graduates from high school and is free to pursue his search, I would take him to Pikeville to search for his relatives. Today, , I accidently discovered this great website and a link to Brandon's heritage. Anyone wishing to communicate with me and establish a contact for my grandson (future use). I would appreciate any valid information as to his genealogical background. E-Mail; rexcalex@bellsouth.net Thank you. Rexford Alexander |

I have a picture of George and his second wife, Gillie, and would like to know if this picture is already on file or if the Association may be interested.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Reply from Jim W. Tackitt: Yes, Ms. Carter, you have the correct line. George B. McClellan Tackett, b c Jan 1861, is the child of MOSES & RHODISA OSBORNE TACKETT for whom we seem to have the least amount of data. We do not have record of George's 2nd marr., other than on the 1910 Wolfe Co., KY census his wife is noted as "Gilley." Check our webpage "Descriptive Table of Contents" for numerous citations on your Tackett and Osborne lines. No, we do not have a photo of George. Thanks for the offer. |

Cloud Stanley Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: born in Arkansas; now in Virginia. Time: 1998-08-16 14:17:20 Comments: New information in my files indicates Mountetna (shown on your web page as Mt. Etna) Tackett was most probably the son of Reuben Tackett. About 1820, Reuben Tackett swapped land in Rapides Parish, LA for land in Arkansas County (which soon thereafter became Phillips County), AR. (Almost all records of Rapides Parish of that time have been lost in Courthouse fires.) No further record of Reuben has been found in AR; however, "the Widow Tackett" is listed on tax roles in AR in 1820-21. We believe Reuben died during or immediately after the move. Known brother of Mountetna: Posey. Known half-brother of Mountetna: George. Probable siblings of Mountetna: Wayn, Iren, Alin, Cindilla. (Family hearsay says there were 10.) All of the above information was found in records in Arkansas, Phillips, and/or Drew Counties of Arkansas (and/or in Mississippi counties directly across the Mississippi River from these counties). Submitted by: Carolyn Cloud Stanley, Falls Church, VA 22043; dau of Joe Cloud; who was son of Elnora Hibbard; who was the dau of Alpha Tackett; who was dau of Mountetna Tackett. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Reply from Jim W. Tackitt. Interesting speculation. As we are not privy to this "about 1820" land swap record involving a REUBEN TACKETT, [and Mt. Etna Tackett?], and between these two LA/AR counties, it is hard to judge. We are aware, however, of a REUBEN T. SACKETT (sic), for whom there are various citations between 1807 and 1860 in LA; this last being in Winn Parish, formed partly from Rapides Parish in 1851 [from a copy of the original U.S. Land Patent Cert. #21123 of 2 Jul 1860]. Although not of this line, researchers will also note that NATHAN VAN BUREN TACKITT, b1807 [son of Lancaster, orig. from Knox Co., KY], settled in Rapides Parish, LA where he is noted in various U.S. Census & Land Patent records. |

I wish i had more info. if you can please help. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Reply from Jim W. Tackitt. Yes, Alan, we have your line on file. Your forefather, FRANCIS TACKITT, c1780-1874, of Pike Co., KY, was one of the true old-time story tellers of the area, I've been told. Due to his rather serious "stretching of the truth," with his storytelling, he became commonly known as "Lyin' Frank" Tackitt, c1780-1874. Your Line: Wm. N.V., Sidney, Wm. Jackson Jr., Wm. Jackson, Francis, Phillip Tackitt Sr., c1745-aft1850, Pike Co., KY. Your Wm. Jackson Jr., and his wife Sallie (or Sarah), were divorced shortly after 1900. Wm. Jackson remarried and Sallie settled in Henryetta, OK where she was reported to have run a hotel and raised the younger children. |

Subscribers to The Tackett Journal were treated to a cover photo (issue 33:2) of three of Caleb's siblings, JOSEPH HOWELL TACKITT, WILEY ALBERT TACKITT & LEONA TACKITT WALSH - as well as a reproduction of an original 1861 document naming M.D. (MannDarius) Tackitt. Susan' Wells' Copple Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Salem, Il. born in Ky. Time: 1998-01-19 08:47:43 Comments: I am researching my family tree. My Father, Willard Franklin Wells is the first born son of Claude William, & Willa Mae Susan Tackett, Wells. The Tackett branch is Thomas Henry,Thomas JW, Sherwood, Moses, Thomas, Phillip, John and Lewis Tacquett Sr. My grandmother, Willa Susan, (whom I'm named after) told me she was decended from a ??s great grandfather, on her mother's side who was an Indian chief, whose daughter being an Indian Princess, would have been her ??s grandmother. I can't remember if it was Blackfoot, Souix or Cherokee, I seem to recall they lived in S.C. I would really appreciate any information on this chief ancestor. A 2nd cousin in Ky., Cynthia Fisher gave me your address. I plan on joining your association. I presently have the Family Tree Maker "Deluxe Edition" 3rd. and am presently trying to fill in the gaps. I never knew I had so many relatives. I can't seem to shut down the computer. My hubsand Ronald thinks I'm losin' it. My father Willard, married Estella (Stella) Oins Waggoner, of Olive Hill, Carter Co., Ky. Her parents were Albert Sidney, & Lacy Ellen Davis, Waggoner of Olive Hill, Ky. It seems my grandmothers on both sides were good friends. My mother and father had 15 children, no twins, all living except the third born, a son who died 1 1/2 yrs of age. I am the second born. Thanks cousin for all your efforts and interest in preserving your heritage. Susan Wells Copple . . . . . . . . . . . . Reply from Jim W. Tackitt: Thank you Susan for the nice note here. Although we have no evidence of any kind that there was Indian ancestry thru any of the Tacketts in your line, I guess it could have come from one of your maternal lines. If so, I would have to guess it to be the Cherokee of the Carolinas, as the Sioux & Blackfeet were western tribes who would not have been anywhere near Kentucky. . . We should remind folks that although it is our strong "assumption" that Susan's PHILLIP TACKITT SR., c1745-aft1830, was a son of JOHN TACQUETT/TACKITT, this is still an unproven line and should only be given with that qualification. |

Most records are located by COUNTY and our very extensive records go back to the early 1700's. Our Journals are also deposited in most of the major libraries in the U.S. and the Mormons have been given permission to microfilm all of our Journals for worldwide distribution thru their Family History Centers.
