The original Chinese characters for baptism imply sprinkling rather than immersion. The LDS church has dealt with this differently in different places. In Chinese-speaking missions they just use the original characters. In Korea they use a different character to mean "immersion ritual" rather than "washing ritual," and the missionaries have to explain to everyone why they use a different word. In Japan they don't use the Chinese characters at all, but just spell out the word "baputesuma" in phonetic katakana.
