The First Mate

Every boat should have a first mate.  Someone who is always there to enjoy the experience of sailing.  My first mate is Aretha.  She is a four year old All American breed.  In addition to sailing she enjoys the competition of Dog Agility.  We compete as a team negotiating a obstacle course.  In 1999 we placed 4th in the 16 inch Pre-Elite Division at the North American Dog Agility national championships.

Aretha loves dinghy rides.  She also really got into fishing this year.  She watched the reels closer than anyone else and made sure we were aware of every strike.

Agility courses are comprised of assorted jumps, tunnels teeter totters and climbing obstacles.  The handler must guide the dog around the course in a specific sequence without occurring faults.  Faults points are acquired for knocking off bars, missing a pole on the weaves, wrong courses.  A typical course might be 24 obstacles to be completed in 45 seconds.
