In 1997, a few talented local music enthusiasts who shared a common vision of showcasing popular Indian music, came together to formally form Tarana. Since then, Tarana has been entertaining the South Asian people of Portland, with their live performances in folk, pop and semi-classical music. The group is also involved in raising funds for various charitable causes affiliated to Indian organizations.

tarana (ta-rah-nah) - tarana is a composition in which mnemonics are used, which are meaningless syllables that extrapolate the raga and produce rhythmic delight. Since the letters used in them have no meaning, the technique serves only a rhythmic purpose. Syllables tana, dir, dani, taddani and Persian syallables others like nom tom and so on are used. Hazrat Amir Khusro is believed to have originated this kind of composition
