No cost-of-living increase for Social Security in 2010 For the first time since 1975, the Social Security Administration (SSA)recommended yesterday to deny a cost-of-living (COLA) increase in social security payments for 2010 for its 57 million beneficiaries. In a SSA press release Michael J. Astrue, Commissioner of Social Security said “Last year when consumer prices spiked, largely as a result of higher gas prices, beneficiaries received a 5.8 percent COLA, the largest increase since 1982. This year, in light of the human need, we need to support President Obama’s call for us to make another $250 recovery payment for 57 million Americans.” This decision is particularly difficult for residents of San Francisco. The average monthly benefit for a single person is $1,153 and $1,876 for a couple, meaning a typical couple on Social Security receive $22,500 annually. According to salary.com, Santa Rosa has a cost-of-living 35% lower than that of San Francisco. The difference between states is even larger; in Oklahoma City the cost-of-living is 48% lower than San Francisco. There is one silver lining in this news. Because the Social Security monthly benefit will not increase, the 2009 Medicare B monthly premium of $96.40 is likely to hold steady through 2010 for about 93% of Social Security beneficiaries (all but those with the highest incomes). While the SSA has submitted its recommendation, the final decision is up to Congress. The AARP is asking concerned citizens to contact your legislators and urge them to reinstate a COLA for 2010.
