In the first game of the Old Bethpage Vintage
Base Ball Festival (Saturday August 7th) , the Taverneers struggled to
gain momentum against the Grays. The
Taverneers had four substitute players and only
11 players on the roster so the team's depth of
players was limited. Nevertheless, the
Taverneers battled mightily with some excellent
fielding by Ray Vasas who had several great left
field catches to rob the Grays of some big base
hits. Consistent hitting proved to be the
weak spot for the team - a steady stream of base
hits never materialized. The Taverneers
prevented the shut out with an early string of
hits to drive Matt Durst in for the only run.
The game finished with the Grays avenging their
July 3rd loss to the Taverneers.
In the second game for the Taverneers, play
greatly improved with lots of hits, great base
running, and solid fielding. The game
presented many twists including a barn in play
in right field where a ball hit off the barn can
be caught for an out. The Taverneers hit
their stride by the 6th inning and began to run
up the score but unfortunately they ran out of
innings to finish the job. Overall the
Mutuals out-hit the Taverneers and emerged on
top.
