As a child on the farm, John learned
carpentry from his family. His first wood
project was crafting a bat and the love of the
game was born. It was there, on a warm April
morning, John would earn the name 'Ox' from his
family. The family prize, a 600 pound bull named
Dutch, got loose from its corral and was making
its way down the old dirt road straight into the
coop on the Huxley farm. John hopped on his
bicycle and made his way past Dutch and planted
himself, as if to charge, straight in Dutch's
path. The family prize curiously stopped and as
if it had seen a ghost, ran back to its corral.
Off the train from Nashville, 'Ox' moved to
the Farmington Valley area to find work in the
North after the war. It was here, at Phelps
Tavern, that the dexterous Ox was fortuitously
discovered by 'Lucky' Lucker, as Lucky watched
Ox save several bottles from smashing against
the bar floor. Figuring any man that can save so
many bottles from dropping against the floor
could surely stop a single ball from hitting the
grass. |
